Manhunt underway for Texas man 'mistakenly' released before serving 5 year prison sentence

NBC Newsa day ago
Authorities are searching for a Texas man that was "mistakenly" released from jail before he was set to serve a 5 year state prison sentence.
Troy Dugas, 36, was "mistakenly released from jail on Sunday" afternoon, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said Monday in a news release that included his mugshot.
The sheriff's office said that Dugas was "due to begin serving a 5-year state prison sentence for assaulting a family member" and a 2-year sentence for evading arrest. Both incidents occurred in counties just outside of Houston, according to the release.
Authorities added that Dugas was in the Harris County Jail since August 14 "on additional local charges that were subsequently dismissed" before his release on Sunday.
'A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to Dugas' erroneous release from jail,' the sheriff's office said in a statement. 'Preliminary indications are that jail staff did not properly document his state prison sentence in his file, leading to the mistaken assumption that Dugas was eligible for release once his Harris County charges were dismissed."
The sheriff's office did not immediately reply to a request for comment seeking additional information.
Authorities described him as a 6'1' 215 pound Black man, and said he has a tattoo on his neck.
They advised anyone who is aware of his whereabouts or sights him to call 911.

Father's murder in Lincoln Park still unsolved nearly two decades later

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — On Aug. 16, 2006, 31-year-old Andre Mahan, a father of two and a custodian with the San Diego Unified School District, was fatally shot inside the family's apartment at Creekside Villas in Lincoln Park. Investigators have not identified a suspect or determined a motive in the case. 'It hurts like it happened today,' said his widow, Essie Mae Horne, who was home with their 18-month-old son and 7-year-old daughter when the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Horne recalled hearing a loud noise that she thought was a car backfiring. Moments later, she said she saw a teenage boy standing in her doorway with a gun. Police seek answers nearly 3 decades after woman's body found in El Cajon 'There was a young light-skinned Black male, looked to be 13 or 14 years old, standing in my doorway facing me with his arm up — and he fired,' Horne said. The bullet missed her but struck Mahan, who collapsed in the kitchen. Horne said her husband tried to speak as blood came from his mouth and nose, but he died within minutes. Their daughter, Dominique, who was still a young child at the time, later wrote a poem about her grief. Horne said her son, who was too young to remember his father, still wonders who he was. In the years since, Horne has launched a nonprofit called TWEEN-SWAG — which stands for 'Together We Elevate Each Other in our Neighborhood Simply With A Lot of Grace' — to support families coping with gun violence. She continues to hope someone will come forward with information about the killer. 'If anybody who came here August 16, 2006, to kill my husband and try to kill me, please say something,' she said. Authorities said anyone with information about the case can contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers. A $1,000 reward is being offered. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Car Crashes Into Food Influencers Through Restaurant Window While They Were Filming

Two vloggers are recovering after a car crashed into the restaurant where they were filming a food review. Patrick Blackwood and Nina Santiago were about 10 minutes into their review of CuVee's Culinary Creations in Houston on Aug. 16, when they caught the terrifying moment on video. The two posted the full incident on their YouTube channel two days later, showing them biting into their food as a car crashes into the window near their booth. Patrick appears to be sitting closest to the window and was covered with shattered glass as Nina is seen falling out of her seat. After looking around, Patrick then helps Nina get up from the floor as they walk away. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the female driver claimed she thought she put her black SUV in park outside of the restaurant and after releasing her foot off the brake, the vehicle rolled into the building. The sheriff's office says the two people inside the booth were injured and taken to a local hospital. Nina and Patrick documented their journey in the ambulance and at the hospital on video, showing some of the scratches on their faces, chins and arms. They were also visibly shaken when recounting the crash on camera. Solve the daily Crossword

Texas man with 5-year prison sentence mistakenly released from Houston jail, manhunt underway

Authorities near Houston are searching for a man who they say was mistakenly released from jail early Sunday morning. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, 36-year-old Troy Dugas was erroneously released around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 17 after being held in the Harris County Jail. "Preliminary indications are that jail staff did not properly document his state prison sentence in his file, leading to the mistaken assumption that Dugas was eligible for release once his Harris County charges were dismissed," the sheriff's office said in a press release Monday. Dugas had been sentenced to five years in state prison for assaulting a family member in Fort Bend County and two years for evading arrest in Brazoria County, deputies said. Dugas had also been in the Harris County Jail since Aug. 14 on additional local charges that were later dismissed. Authorities described Dugas as a Black male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 215 pounds, with a tattoo on his neck. Officials are urging anyone who sees him to call 911. "A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to Dugas' erroneous release from jail," This is not the first time an inmate has been mistakenly released from the Harris County Jail, according to CBS affiliate KHOU in Houston. On Feb. 20, Justin Tompkins, 21, who was facing capital murder charges and being held on $750,000 bail since December 2022, was released due to a case of mistaken identity. Jail staff confused him with another inmate of the same name, authorities said. The error was discovered the next day, prompting a search by deputies. Tompkins voluntarily surrendered about 24 hours later, at 8:40 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21.
