Former Russian commander in Ukraine Sergei Surovikin reported to be working in Algeria

Details: Russian journalists have drawn attention to photographs posted by the Russian Embassy in Algeria in which a man similar to Surovikin wearing sunglasses is present.
The embassy did not mention the general's name, but indicated that his position is "head of a group of Russian military specialists".
Background:
After Prigozhin's rebellion in the summer of 2023, Surovikin no longer appeared in the public eye.
Rumours spread in the Russian media that the general may have known about the rebellion in advance. He was arrested after the mutiny and released after Prigozhin died in a plane crash.
From October 2022 to January 2023, Surovikin commanded the joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine, and from 11 January 2023, he served as deputy commander.
Surovikin visited Algeria in September 2023 amid media speculation that he might be appointed to work in the eastern part of the country.
In February 2025, Victor Sobolev, a member of the Duma Defence Committee, said that Surovikin was "working as a military adviser" in an African country.

A CIA spokesperson issued a statement to CNN: 'The entire CIA family is heartbroken for their loss. Juliane and her husband shared that 'we adored our son and grieve his loss every moment. We appreciate privacy at this difficult time.'' 'Juliane Gallina and her family suffered an unimaginable personal tragedy in the spring of 2024 when her son Michael Gloss, who struggled with mental health issues, died while fighting in the conflict in Ukraine. CIA considers Michael's passing to be a private family matter for the Gloss family – not a national security issue,' the spokesperson said. Witkoff has played a significant role in the US effort to end Russia's war in Ukraine, including sitting alongside President Donald Trump in his summit with Putin in Alaska on Friday. Poland calls a drone crash in the country's east a Russian provocation amid peace talks
Poland Crash WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's defense minister said that a flying object that crashed and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland early Wednesday was identified as a Russian drone, calling it a provocation by Russia. At a news conference in Warsaw, Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz accused Russia of provoking NATO during a crucial moment, as peace talks over the war in neighboring Ukraine are underway, the country's news agency PAP reported.
