Laughter fades as ‘Santan Berlada' comedian Khairul Azhar passes away; comms minister offers heartfelt condolences
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has extended his condolences to the family of the late Khairul Azhar Abdul Samad, the beloved actor from the iconic sitcom Santan Berlada, who died last night.
In a post on X today, Fahmi expressed his sorrow over the passing of the veteran comedian, who brought joy to Malaysians in the 1980s through the popular series, which aired on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
'Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. Santan Berlada was one of my favourite sitcoms during my primary school years. It was full of light-hearted humour and brought fond memories.
'Thank you for brightening our days. My deepest condolences to the family of the late Khairul Azhar,' he wrote, praying for his soul to be showered with blessings and placed among the righteous.
Khairul Azhar, 70, rose to prominence in the 1980s through Santan Berlada, starring alongside Ali Mamak and Acapan, both of whom have also passed away.
Earlier media reports stated that Khairul Azhar, who was also a former drummer for the Klang Municipal Council combo group, passed away at his home in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, at 10.37pm last night.
It was reported that he was found unconscious in a car by his personal assistant. — Bernama

NIBONG TEBAL, June 1 — Police have received two reports regarding an altercation involving two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza here, after a video of the incident went viral on social media yesterday. Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District Police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said further investigations were ongoing, and efforts to trace the suspects involved were being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the SPS District Police Headquarters (IPD). 'Police detected a 28-second video that went viral on social media showing a misunderstanding between two road users at the RFID lane of the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, heading south, at about 5.15 pm today. 'The incident involved a rear-end collision which led to an argument, property damage, as well as allegations of physical assault and criminal intimidation by one of the individuals involved,' he said in a statement tonight. He said the video, which was recorded using a dashboard camera, had gone viral and sparked various reactions from the public. He added that investigations were being conducted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. Earlier, a video clip had gone viral on social media, showing an argument between two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, with one of them, who was only wearing a sarong and a cap, seen attempting to attack using a weapon before both were calmed down by another individual present at the scene. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has been discharged from hospital and will remain in the Malaysian capital for a few more days to rest, his office said on Saturday. Sultan Hassanal was admitted to hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday due to fatigue, though his office had insisted the world's longest-serving monarch was in 'good health'. 'His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ... praise be to God, is back at the Grand Hyatt Hotel after resting a few days at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur,' his office said in an Instagram post on Saturday. 'Medical experts have advised His Majesty to continue resting for a few more days before departing back to Brunei,' it added. The 78-year-old sultan was in Kuala Lumpur for a summit with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders. A statement from the Brunei prime minister's office — a position held by the sultan — on Tuesday said the monarch had been feeling tired and that Malaysian health experts had advised him to rest for a few days at the National Heart Institute. Sultan Hassanal ascended the throne in 1967. He is one of the richest people on the planet, and comes from a family that has ruled Brunei, a small Muslim nation perched on the north of the tropical island of Borneo, for more than 600 years. His decades ruling Brunei have seen the country gain full independence from Britain and living standards soar to among the highest globally. KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 – Influencer Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin, better known as Cleopatra, has officially joined the Islamist party PAS yesterday, citing the need to provide a better future for her children. PAS' Muslimat Wing posted on Facebook that the former independent candidate for Batu submitted her application to wing chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh 'Cleopatra said her decision to join PAS was driven by her hopes for her children's future,' the wing said. 'A single mother, she had previously expressed a desire to get to know PAS better and had voiced her willingness to undergo the party's spiritual and ideological 'tarbiyyah',' it added, using the Arabic word that roughly translates to 'training' or 'education'. Nuridah said the wing has long remained committed to championing the welfare of vulnerable groups such as the poor, persons with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers, and orphans. 'Cleopatra's entry into PAS is seen as a strategic move to strengthen women's political engagement in Malaysia and to further the cause of community welfare,' it said. A single mother and entrepreneur, Nur Fathiah also founded women's and community rights group called Hetero Action Women Alliance (Hawa). She ran in the 15th general election in the crowded Batu parliamentary seat in Kuala Lumpur and garnered only 628 votes in the 10-candidate contest. Pakatan Harapan's P. Prabakaran won by a 22,241-vote majority.
