Police probe viral road rage incident at Bukit Tambun toll plaza
NIBONG TEBAL, June 1 — Police have received two reports regarding an altercation involving two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza here, after a video of the incident went viral on social media yesterday.
Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District Police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said further investigations were ongoing, and efforts to trace the suspects involved were being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the SPS District Police Headquarters (IPD).
'Police detected a 28-second video that went viral on social media showing a misunderstanding between two road users at the RFID lane of the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, heading south, at about 5.15 pm today.
'The incident involved a rear-end collision which led to an argument, property damage, as well as allegations of physical assault and criminal intimidation by one of the individuals involved,' he said in a statement tonight.
He said the video, which was recorded using a dashboard camera, had gone viral and sparked various reactions from the public.
He added that investigations were being conducted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
Earlier, a video clip had gone viral on social media, showing an argument between two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, with one of them, who was only wearing a sarong and a cap, seen attempting to attack using a weapon before both were calmed down by another individual present at the scene. — Bernama

Point-to-point speed detection hasn't started yet, says ministry

(JPJ Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has not started the trial of the point-to-point speed detection using the new Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras. The office of transport minister Loke Siew Fook said no date had been set yet for the pilot project, which was supposed to start sometime this month. It said updates on the trial would be announced in due course, Berita Harian reported. JPJ is set to test the system on two main highways – the Karak Highway, from the Genting Sempah tunnel to the Gombak rest stop, and on the North-South Expressway (PLUS), from the Senawang toll plaza to the Simpang Ampat (Alor Gajah) toll plaza. The department had also planned to introduce the system in accident-prone areas, such as from the Menora tunnel to the Sungai Perak rest stop on the PLUS highway. The system, which uses artificial intelligence, would catch speeding drivers by measuring the time their vehicle took to travel between two points and then calculating its average speed. If a vehicle reached a location earlier than if it kept to the speed limit, a traffic summons would be automatically issued based on the plate number. Transport secretary-general M Jana Santhiran had said the system would also be able to determine if drivers stopped their vehicles to prolong their journey time and avoid being caught speeding, but did not elaborate how.

‘We're not looking for luxury, just survival': Putra Heights fire victims plead for extended aid as promises stall
PETALING JAYA, June 2 — Victims of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, are hoping that temporary aid, such as rental homes, cars and motorcycles previously provided by various parties, can be extended, as some of the assistance has recently expired. Two months after the incident on April 1, some victims are now in a quandary as they are required to return the aid. Mohamad Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, a resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru who was affected by the incident, said his family is currently staying in a small house near their original home with rental support for three months while waiting for their house to be repaired. 'My house was deemed a total loss, with an estimated repair cost of RM150,000, but to this day, the appointed contractor has yet to begin work,' he told Bernama when met in the housing estate today. Mohamad Nasir said the temporary vehicle he received after the incident was also returned last month when the loan period ended. 'For daily errands, if I need a car, I use a Kancil that I've slowly repaired bit by bit. We're not looking for luxury — just a car that can serve our everyday needs,' said the father of nine. Regarding the repair works on his home, Mohamad Nasir said that for now, his family is trying to carry on with life as usual and understands that it will take time, as many other homes were also destroyed in the incident. 'When the contractor starts the repairs, I want to see how they will go about it and what the situation will be like, because we've yet to be informed how the process will be carried out,' he said. Meanwhile, his wife, Aliyah Ismail, 55, said she was grateful for the assistance received but hoped that cash compensation would also be provided to help victims, especially those left homeless, sustain their livelihoods. Previously a catering business operator, she now sells traditional cakes and snacks, earning between RM20 and RM30 a day to help cover daily expenses, in addition to financial support from her children. Aliyah said that so far, apart from receiving vouchers for electronic goods and other aid, her family has only been informed of assistance for home repairs. 'As of now, we haven't heard anything about compensation — only about home repairs. Compensation should be given. We have no money, no income. Rental is expensive. 'Goods are expensive too, and to restart my catering business, I need to buy a lot of supplies and equipment because everything was destroyed in the fire,' she said. The gas pipeline fire saw flames shoot more than 30 metres high, with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firemen took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze. Eighty-one homes were destroyed, suffering structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, another 81 were partially destroyed, 57 were affected but not burnt, while 218 homes were unaffected in the fire. — Bernama

Mara-sponsored students may pursue studies in the UK amid US policy changes, says Zahid
LONDON: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) sponsored students, who were initially bound for further studies in universities in the United States this year, will most likely be sent to the United Kingdom instead. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the UK seemed to be the best choice given the facilities and Mara's close cooperation with the universities there. "We already know that Mara will stop sending its students to the US starting this year (given the uncertainties in current US policies). "Thus, we will most probably send the students to the UK, where they will be able to pursue their chosen courses," he told reporters after a pre-council meeting on this four-day working visit to Britain on Monday (June 2). Furthermore, three universities in the UK have also agreed to give discounts of up to 20% in tuition fees for Mara-sponsored students, he said. "My belief is that whenever there is a calamity, there are always opportunities," he added. Asked about Public Service Department (JPA) sponsored students, who are also supposed to further their studies in the US, Ahmad Zahid said he will have a discussion with the Chief Secretary to the Government and JPA director-general on the matter. "We will conduct relevant discussions before taking any action or making a decision. "The same goes for other students sponsored by various agencies (who are supposed to go to the US for further studies)," he said. On his working visit to Britain, Ahmad Zahid said he would maximise the opportunities despite it being a short visit. "I will touch on various topics, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the halal market and tourism. "For tourism, I will be launching the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 in London on Tuesday (June 3). "I will also hold talks with tourism industry players in London, especially wholesalers and retailers," he said. Ahmad Zahid said the target is to attract 500,000 tourists from the UK by the end of 2026. "We hope to reach not only the UK market but Europe as well," he said. Ahmad Zahid arrived in London on Sunday night (June 1) for his four-day working visit to Britain, which will run until June 4, in a move aimed at further strengthening Malaysia-UK bilateral ties.
