Sabalenka sets the stage as French Open awaits Nadal tribute
Zheng crushed Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-3 later to extend her winning run on Parisian clay to seven matches while Ukraine's Elina Svitolina dropped only two games in a 6-1 6-1 win over Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who secured her first win since her maternity break at the Italian Open this month, was an early casualty after her 3-6 6-0 6-4 defeat by Swiss Viktorija Golubic.
Germany's Eva Lys produced an upset, beating American 28th seed Peyton Stearns 6-0 6-3, while Canadian qualifier Victoria Mboko marked her Grand Slam main-draw debut with a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over New Zealand's Lulu Sun.
Hamad Medjedovic became the first player into the men's second round with a 6-3 6-3 7-6(2) win over Kamil Majchrzak and he was joined by local hope Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who hit 12 aces to beat Belgium's Zizou Bergs 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) 6-4.
Musetti had little trouble seeing off qualifier Hanfmann 7-5 6-2 6-0 but American 12th seed Tommy Paul had to overcame a slow start and rain interruptions to beat lucky loser Elmer Moller 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3 6-1.
"It was a weird match from the jump with the wind and the rain on and off, it being a little colder," Rome semi-finalist Paul said.
"He came out playing well, ready to go. I started a little slow, also a little nervous. After that first set, I felt like I was able to loosen up and really start playing my game better."

Carlos Alcaraz starts Wimbledon title defence against Italian foe
Carlos Alcaraz will start his Wimbledon defence against Fabio Fognini while world number one Jannik Sinner faces a potential semi-final clash against Novak Djokovic following Friday's draw. On the women's side, reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova begins her campaign against 2025 breakout star Alexandra Eala on Centre Court. Spain's Alcaraz, who has beaten Djokovic in the past two finals, arrives at the All England Club on a career-best 18-match winning streak. He is aiming to become just the fifth man to win at least three straight Wimbledon titles in the Open Era after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Djokovic. The Spaniard, 22, has a 2-0 head-to-head record against Italian veteran Fognini. Sinner's pursuit of a maiden Wimbledon crown could hinge on a heavyweight semi-final clash with seven-time champion Djokovic. The Italian opens against compatriot Luca Nardi at the grass-court major while Djokovic, competing at his lowest seeding (sixth) since 2018, will begin his campaign for a record-tying eighth Wimbledon men's title against Frenchman Alexandre Muller. Djokovic, who has been in every final since 2018, is seeded for a quarter-final meeting with British fourth seed Jack Draper, who starts against Argentina's Sebastian Baez. Krejcikova missed the first five months of 2025 with a back injury and was forced to withdraw from this week's Eastbourne quarter-finals due to a thigh injury. Filipino emerging star Eala, 20, captured the tennis world's attention in March by defeating three Grand Slam champions – Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek – to reach the Miami semi-finals. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka, hoping to progress beyond the semi-finals for the first time, opens against fast-rising Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine. Second seed Coco Gauff, who beat Sabalenka in the French Open final earlier this month, starts against Nottingham finalist Dayana Yastremska. The Championships start on Monday and finish on July 13. Wimbledon's human touch yields to electronic eyes
The All England Club's decision to jettison line judges in favour of technology carries an air of inevitability as the world embraces artificial intelligence, but the human arbiters of the boundaries of the tennis court are hoping to continue playing a key role. Convention has almost been a religion during Wimbledon's 148-year history but advancements in technology have been impossible to resist, with live electronic line calling (ELC) set to take over from impeccably attired line judges when action begins at the grass court major on Monday. The tournament's once robust pool of about 300 line judges has been cut to 80 and they will serve as 'match assistants', who support chair umpires and step in should the ELC — powered by more than 450 cameras — fail in any of the 18 courts in use. The Association of British Tennis Officials (Abto) said the new position, which will be adopted at events that use live ELC, provided a fresh avenue for its officials with strong interest expressed in the role. 'While this evolution has resulted in a reduction in the officiating days for line umpires, the effect has been partially offset by the creation of the match assistant position,' the Abto told Reuters via e-mail.

Could Rele Mofokeng be heading to America? FC Cincinnati enter race for Orlando Pirates star
Rele on the move? Major Soccer League club FC Cincinnati have joined the race to sign Orlando Pirates starlet Relebohile Mofokeng. Photo: BackpagePix Major Soccer League outfit FC Cincinnati have reportedly become the latest club to register an interest in signing Orlando Pirates' 20-year-old sensation Relebohile Mofokeng. According to Soccer Laduma, the American club has become a serious contender for the services of Mofokeng, who is regarded as one of the brightest young prospects to come out of South Africa in a long time. This follows news that Israeli clubs Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv are also interested. Last week, it was reported that Maccabi Haifa had approached Pirates to enquire about the player and were told they needed to cough up R31 million. However, with the volatile situation in the Middle East, Mofokeng is unlikely to make the move, leaving the United States as a strong possibility.
