Manchester Arena bomb plotter charged with attempted murder of prison guards
The brother of the Manchester Arena suicide bomber has been charged with attempted murder after four prison guards were attacked at high security HMP Frankland.
Counter terrorism police confirmed Hashem Abedi, aged 28, has been charged with five offences following the incident on April 12, 2025. They said the incident had been subject to a 'thorough investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East, with support from Durham Constabulary and HMP Frankland. '
Their statement said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised charges against Abedi including three counts of Attempted Murder, one count of Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm and one count of Unauthorised Possession in Prison of a Knife or Offensive Weapon.
He will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 18.
It has been reported that prison officers had hot cooking oil thrown over them and three were stabbed using improvised blades at the County Durham jail.
The attack happened in the jail's Separation Centre, which holds fewer than 10 inmates and is used to house prisoners regarded as the most dangerous and extremist.
Abedi was jailed for life in 2020 for helping his brother carry out the 2017 bombing, which killed 22 people at the end of an Ariana Grande concert. He was sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in jail.
With his brother, the suicide bomber Salman Abedi, Hashem Abedi planned and prepared the attack on the Ariana Grande concert in 2017. He was in Libya when the blast took place and was later extradited to the UK to face trial.
It emerged after the incident how inmates inside separation units were given access to cooking facilities. This access has since been suspended.
The officers were all taken to hospital after the incident which is believed to have involved boiling 'butter or margarine' and a 'makeshift weapon'.
The incident led to growing calls for the introduction of stab-proof vests 'as a minimum' for prison officers.
There were 10,496 assaults against prison staff in England and Wales in the 12 months to September - a 19% rise on the previous year.

Tributes paid to 'one of a kind' Scots dad killed in horror Ayrshire lorry crash

I wish me and my nana could hop a plane right now to go be with our family. "Our next trips to Scotland will be a little less wild without him. But Heaven gained a heck of a guy! "We love you John McKinstry, everyone please keep his wife and kids in your prayers." Other family and friends left their own heartfelt messages in the comments. One said: "Sending you loads of love Lindsay. He was definitely one of a kind and is a massive privilege knowing him. "Thinking of you and your wee family. Rest easy John." A second wrote: "My heart goes out to you and the family, he was a lovable rogue. Sending love and strength to you all." Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, and are appealing for any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward. The road was closed for nearly seven hours to allow crash investigators to carry out work, and fully reopened at around 8.30pm on Monday. Sergeant Martin Cunningham, of the Road Policing Unit in Glasgow, said: 'Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died. "Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. I would urge anyone with information who hasn't yet spoken to us to get in touch. New update on Gogglebox star George Gilbey's tragic death issued by police
George Gilbey died earlier this year following an accident at work. Police have released an update on their investigation into the death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey. The 40-year-old appeared on the Channel 4 show alongside his mum Linda McGarry and stepdad Pete McGarry, who died in 2021 at the age of 71. He tragically lost his life following a workplace accident in Shoebury, Essex, on March 27 last year. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, including air ambulance medics, he died at the scene. A spokesperson for Essex Police said at the time: "We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (March 27), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury." An inquest into the roofer's death opened in April this year, and revealed he had plunged through a plastic skylight, and had sustained injuries "consistent with a fall from height", the Mirror reports. Two men were later arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of manslaughter, but were released pending further investigation. The force has since confirmed the pair will not face any further action from the police. However, the criminal investigation is to continue. A spokesperson said: "The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police remain with George's family and friends. The criminal investigation remains open and will be led by the Health and Safety Executive." He had the best heart in the world. He was generous, funny and kind, with bundles of charm and buckets of personality. Dog walker dumps exhausted pet in home after walk in 27C heat before owner finds it dead

A dog walker dumped a granny's exhausted pet in her home after a walk in 27C heat leaving the owner to find it dead when she got home. Dave McGhee - who runs Dave's Dugs - left English Bulldog Shelby in her owner's Bellshill home after the walk. The dog 's owner, disabled gran Mandy Lawrie, 63, returned home to find two-year-old Shelby lying dead on the living room floor. The dog walker told Mandy's daughter he had taken Shelby on a 20 minute walk and the pet was returned to the house feeling no ill-effects. But a neighbour's doorbell camera captured McGhee carrying the dog lying in his arms up the garden path before it was left in Mandy's house. The clip confirmed Shelby was returned to the house almost an hour after she was picked up. Last night McGhee said he was sorry over Shelby's death. But Mandy has been left heartbroken. Her daughter Michelle said: 'It was really hot outside. He said he took the dogs on a short walk in the shade. 'He claimed Shelby walked in the gate and was happy when he dropped her off.' Michelle's suspicions arose and she asked her mum's next-door-neighbour for their doorbell camera footage. She said: 'We were shocked watching the footage. She looked lifeless. 'It was distressing seeing her in that condition. We couldn't believe it. 'My mum has MS and COPD. She's not fit to take the dogs out so that's why she relies on Dave. Mandy, who suffers from MS and uses a mobility scooter, hired Dave's Dugs one year ago to walk her three pets after struggling with her mobility. McGhee had arrived at 10.30am on Tuesday to collect Shelby and Staffordshire Bull Terrier Raven and Mandy left behind a key for the dogs to be dropped off. Her daughter Michelle told the Record her mum has been left traumatised after finding Shelby. The 41-year-old said: 'Shelby was a bubbly wee dog. She usually runs to the front door when she hears us coming in but the house was quiet when we arrived. 'We walked in and she was lying dead on the living room floor. 'My mum is traumatised. 'I don't know how she will cope. 'She only lost her sister three weeks ago. The dogs are like her children. 'Her other dog Raven was just staring at Shelby's body wondering why she wouldn't move. It broke our hearts.' Michelle slammed McGhee for failing to seek veterinary treatment for Shelby. She said: 'He made no attempt to get her to a vet or even call us to say she was unwell. 'English Bulldogs struggle in the heat due because of their short muzzles - never mind being outside for an hour. 'It's disgusting. 'The way that this has happened is outrageous." Last night Dave told the Record: 'I am deeply sorry for the loss of Shelby. I have been walking dogs for over two years and have always prioritised their wellbeing. 'What began as a tragedy has unfortunately led to threats of violence. I will not be commenting further.' The tragedy occurred as a third heatwave struck Scotland this week. Temperatures are expected to soar to up to 30C across some areas of the country. Veterinary charity PDSA warned of the dangers of walking animals during extreme bouts of hot weather. PDSA Vet Emma Fisher said: 'Hot temperatures can lead to fatal consequences for our pets. 'Too much heat can be extremely dangerous for our canine companions, especially for flat-faced breeds and overweight dogs, who find it much more difficult to cool themselves down. Older dogs and those with ongoing health problems may also find it more difficult to manage their body temperature. 'Dogs don't sweat in the same way that we do, so to regulate their body temperature and cool themselves down, they pant instead. Panting is part of a dog's normal cooling process. 'Dogs love to run around, but that's also when heatstroke can sneak up on them, especially during hot weather. If you do head out for a dog walk, try to go early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is lower and temperatures are cooler. During a heatwave, skipping a walk altogether may be the safest option.' The SSPCA confirmed an investigation was ongoing. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 5.15pm on Tuesday, 12 August, 2025 we received a report of a dead dog at a property in Mossend, Bellshill. 'Appropriate advice was given to the reporter and there is no further police involvement.'
