But the value of Google could and would be larger were it not for growing anxiety that AI is going to totally upend the way we find things on the internet, and how businesses pay platforms like Google for customers.

Only 36 per cent of Australians have any faith the US will act responsibly in the world, a 20 point drop since last year, shocking new polling has revealed. The Lowy Institute's 2025 Poll, touted as the broadest annual survey of Australian attitudes, reveals Australians' feelings of safety and economic optimism have fallen to their lowest levels in the 21-year history of the poll. Trust in the US was a record low in the poll, however the nation is still seen as key to ensuring our security, Lowy Institute executive director, Michael Fullilove said 'Australians are clearly unsettled by what they've seen of the second Trump administration, with almost two-thirds (64 per cent) now holding little to no trust in the United States to act responsibly — the lowest level in the history of the Lowy Institute Poll,' Dr Fullilove said. 'At the same time, the public continues to separate the person of the president from the institution of the alliance. 'Most Australians (80 per cent) still believe the Australia-US alliance is important to our security - one of the most consistent findings in the history of the Institute's polling.' The polling did however find that 40 per cent of Australians believed we needed to distance ourselves more from the US. Trust in China was also at dire levels, with only 20 per cent of those surveyed expressing any trust whatsoever. The polling surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2117 Australian adults in early March. The polling has a 2.1 per cent margin of error. Only half of Australians reported feeling any level of optimism about the five-year economic outlook, equalling the pandemic doldrums of 2020, and the pessimistic result was recorded before President Trump's 'liberation day' global tariffs rocked financial markets. The concern about global trade has sharpened the desire to manufacture more domestically. More than 80 per cent of Australians feel more should be built onshore even if it costs more, while just 16 per cent of people say Australia should source all goods from wherever they cost the least. We hear a lot about the Artificial intelligence revolution, changing the way we live. From searching Google, to finding a new recipe, writing a resume, driverless cars or searching for friends on Facebook. It's all powered by AI It's very clever and very convenient. But as the team at 7NEWS Spotlight discovered, there's an appalling human cost to Artificial intelligence. They're African workers who say they're being treated as modern day slaves - exploited so our daily lives are made easier. The rise and rise of AI Simply, AI is taking over the world. Computers thinking like humans, with lightning speed. Doing tasks and jobs that would normally need our time and intelligence. 'The thing that really has surprised me is the speed with which it's unfolding, the rate at which it's unfolding to see a billion dollars being spent on AI every day, so it's arriving at a pace that is unprecedented. We've never seen a technology come into our lives so quickly,' Toby Walsh, Chief Scientist at said. He says the technology will have a marvellous effect on our lives, adding: 'It's going to allow us to live healthier, wealthier, longer lives. It's going to help us tackle all of the diseases. I can imagine a time in 20, 30, 40 years' time where we no longer have cancer. We have solved cancer because of AI.' AI saving our lives – it sounds astonishing, but that's how fast it's all moving. But at what cost? The unseen, untold story of this AI revolution is the massive amount of cheap labour needed to shovel all the data into big tech's search engines so companies like Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft and Google can claim our lives are being made better. That cheap labour includes Joan, Michael and Chychy, who live in Nairobi, Kenya. They call themselves data labellers. 15,000kms from Silicon Valley they're the workers crucial to AI. They give descriptions, images, labels, notes – absolutely every bit information needed for artificial intelligence to learn and grow. 'AI from my perspective human intelligence. It's just they're putting the artificial to sell it to the majority because we've been quiet for far too long.' says Joan. 'If you say artificial intelligence, I'll say you can please correct that and say African intelligence because most of this work has been done here in Africa,' Michael adds. Kenya is known as the Silicon Savannah, the critical link in the AI supply chain. That chain begins with tech companies including the big players - Meta, OpenAI, Google and Amazon, who need a lot of human sourced images and information to train their artificial intelligence. To do that they contract data collection businesses. They then recruit an army of outsourced workers in poorer parts of the world. Thousands of people spend eight hours a day, working from home, drawing boxes around objects and labelling them, so AI algorithms recognise them. But some tasks aren't so simple. Pretending to be a cannibal Some of the workers we met had to label and describe explicit content so AI can let the rest of us know, that content is too disturbing to watch or read. One of Chychy's tasks was cannibalism. She was asked to explain the taste of human flesh. Michael had to label pornography, often extreme. The young father says he had no choice as he had to pay off medical bills after his child was treated for cancer. 'I really needed money. It really helped me big time. I managed to settle at least half the loan that I had actually taken for medication.' Michael said. But today the trauma of viewing that content for hours on end remains. 'So I'm watching pornography eight hours a day. And I did that for eight good months. It was not an easy thing for me because watching pornography for eight hours is not a joke and someone gets away with it,' he says. Michael and his colleagues aren't directly employed by big tech. They're subcontracted by outsource companies perhaps deliberately at arm's length - and jurisdiction - from the foreign technology giants. When workers sign-up online, they're not told which company the job is for and they're often paid just cents per task. Director of the Australian Human Rights Institute Justine Nolan says the industry needs cleaning up. 'Sure, we recognize some of the big names of meta, et cetera, but before you get to that point, there's a whole lot of software work being done that's a combination of tech and humans. And so, it's easier, I think for us to disassociate ourselves from that service supply chain yet and not see that the mistakes of the past are being replicated.' Justine says. Australian company in the spotlight One company with questions to answers is Appen. Appen was an early starter in the AI industry, initially focused on voice recognition. These days its focus is data collection including photos for big tech clients. Appen's client list has included Microsoft, Apple, Meta, Google and Amazon. The workers we met in Kenya say they were asked by Appen to provide photos of children, for a few cents. Chychy says she was asked to send photos of a three-year-old have a nappy changed. 'I was like, okay, you're now being intrusive into my space. So, in the first place, you never paid for the project that I applied for that is data collection, data labelling. I never got that. Now it is images and now a baby changing diaper. Why? Where is it going? I refused. I never replied to those emails. I never did anything, and I never went back to the platform.' she says. Michael says he provided 800 photographs to Appen but never received a cent for them because the company rejected a handful of them. 'They keep telling you they need more images. A hundred never met their requirements and you need to submit more.' He says. Despite never being paid for his work, he says none of the photos have been returned. The issue of payment is one that plagues Appen. We found an endless list of complaints about this $500 million company. Chychy spent six months working on every Appen project available to her she made just two dollars which she couldn't access. The payment platform Appen made her use had a ten-dollar minimum withdrawal. It's not just the frontline workers raising an alarm. The university of Oxford University also has Appen in its sights. Every year it scores the working conditions of cloud work companies and Appen manages just three out of 10. Ethical AI For many of us artificial intelligence has already become an essential part of our lives. For those in Kenya it's become an essential part of their livelihoods. Chychy, Joan and Michael have now combined with other workers in Kenya and started the data labellers association. They hope to create ethical AI, changing the way artificial intelligence is created around the world. 'I think it's high time the investors know where is this data coming from, how these people are compensated? How many hours do they work? Is the, before we get this final product, what is the process?' Chychy says. Michael says, 'we will ensure they (the tech companies) do the right thing in the entire continent. We are going to make sure that here in Africa things are done the right way.' Full list of questions we sent Appen Images Kenyan workers have been asked to provide photos of minors – what specifically are these photos being used for? Which company are these photos being collected for? Why aren't workers told specifically how and where these images will be used? Could these images be on sold in the future or are they only used for one project? Where does Appen store these images? Workers are not paid for images that don't meet technical requirements, why aren't those images returned? What happens to the images that do meet technical requirements and why aren't workers paid for them? i.e in the situation where eight might be accepted but two are rejected What is required to show specific consent from people featured in images? Payments You claim to pay minimum wage for your outsourced workers – how is the 'minimum wage' determined for Kenya? We can find no evidence Appen is paying minimum wage in Kenya as an hourly, daily or task rate. Could you provide evidence of paying outsourced workers in Kenya minimum wage according to their country's rates. Workers claim they're unable to access money earned for tasks due to payment platforms, used by Appen, requiring a minimum withdrawal. Why do you require workers use these specific payment platforms where they can't withdraw their wages? Training What do you do with the data collected during the training process? Why don't you pay workers for the data collected during the training process? Messages from workers We provided Ryan Kolln a USB stick with messages from workers in Kenya – has he viewed that? What is Mr. Kolln's response to those messages? Are you exploiting workers in Kenya, as they allege? Are you guilty of Modern Slavery, as workers in Kenya allege? You've signed the Modern Slavery Act agreeing to report slavery risks in your supply chain, we can find no evidence provided by Appen to prove its supply chain doesn't exploit workers or engage in slavery of workers in Kenya – can you provide evidence to the contrary. General questions Does Lukas Biewald still have any connection to Appen? Appen gives workers 'contracts' if they pass training – what is the point of that 'contract'? Why don't workers have to sign the 'contract'? One of our workers (Geoffrey Michael Asia) has been locked out of his Appen account since talking to us – is this a reaction to his involvement in our investigation? While project-specific information may at times be limited due to binding agreements with clients, we aim to provide contributors with as much clarity as permitted. Spotlight response: We asked for further clarification regarding consent i.e is it written, verbal etc but were given no further information On payments, we understand the frustration that some workers feel regarding minimum withdrawal limits set by certain payment platforms. To clarify, we do not impose these limits ourselves — they are set by the payment providers directly, typically to ensure the withdrawal request can cover any transaction fees associated with the preferred payment method. Our system is designed to work within their frameworks, and we are continuously evaluating alternative providers with better terms, including lower minimum withdrawal thresholds. One of the key reasons we adopted a wallet-based system was to give Contributors the flexibility to choose their preferred payment provider from the available options. This approach allows for more control and accessibility, depending on what's available in their region. We also want to note that we do not charge any fees for money transfers or currency conversion. All payments are passed through directly to the chosen provider without any markup or commission from our side. We remain committed to improving the payment experience and are always looking for ways to make it more convenient and accessible for all Contributors. In regard to our data storage practices, all data is deleted by Appen after it has been delivered to the client, as the copyright only belongs to the end customer. Spotlight response: Therefore, it is unknown where images end up or if they can be sold to someone else. We also want to firmly address the allegation that any contributor was locked out of their account due to engagement with your investigation. Our audit records show consistent logins by the individual in question, and no evidence supports the claim of a lockout.
