Manivannan takes over as BDA commissioner, Mohandas Pai calls him ‘action-oriented'

In a key bureaucratic reshuffle, the Karnataka government on Friday appointed senior IAS officer Manivannan P. as the new Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).
According to a report by The Hindu, a 1998-batch officer, Manivannan will take over with concurrent charge while continuing as the Principal Secretary of the Social Welfare Department.
His appointment, effective May 31, comes as the current BDA Commissioner Jayaram N. is set to retire on the same day, the report added.
The BDA, often at the centre of criticism over Bengaluru's chaotic urban expansion, is currently grappling with multiple challenges. One of its flagship projects, the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, has seen sluggish progress, and residents continue to complain of poor infrastructure.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently announced that the skydeck project, part of the city's broader development push, will take shape within this very layout in Kengeri.
The BDA, along with the BBMP, has also faced backlash for approving layouts and constructions without ensuring adequate infrastructure, thereby contributing to urban sprawl and civic stress in India's tech capital.

The appointment has drawn attention from public figures and civic commentators.
Prominent Bengaluru-based entrepreneur and investor Mohandas Pai welcomed the decision on X (formerly Twitter), saying, 'Thank you very much Rao avare. Your constant Indus film is very needed. Pl busy Shante's 25 days to see progress. Only way to get things improved. @BBMPCOMM great work. Thanks Minister @DKShivakumar for having an action-oriented dynamic officer.'
Pai's endorsement reflects a broader hope among citizens that Manivannan's track record of proactive governance will bring new energy and accountability to the BDA.
Manivannan has previously held key roles across departments in Karnataka, and his appointment comes at a time when Bengaluru's planning agencies are under increased scrutiny for their role in shaping the city's future.

Irish fighter Paddy McCorry seemingly yells pro-Palestine slogans while landing brutal blows on former IDF member turned fighter Shuki Farage

Image via Paddy McCorry/Instagram 27-year-old Irish fighter Paddy McCorry raised eyebrows across the internet with his apparently yelled pro-Palestine slogans after landing some of the brutal elbows upon his opponent, Shuki Farage, at the Cage Warriors 189 event. Held in Rome, Italy, the event was headlined by the welterweight bout between Giacomo Michelis and Sado Ucar. McCorry's final blows were accompanied by the loud cheers and chanting of pro-Palestine slogans by the audiences, as well chanted against the former Israel Defense Forces member Shuki Farage . Ahead of the bout, the Israel-based fighter was quite confident about defeating the Irish fighter. Farage even used phrases like 'take down' and 'pound his face' in order to guarantee his win against McCorry. However, that didn't pan out according to the fighter's plans and instead faced the echoing chants from both the audience and his opponent. Will the Donald Trump administration be forced to give billions of dollars in tariff refunds?

If the ruling is upheld it could mean the Trump administration will have to reimburse the substantial import duties already collected. (AI image) What will happen if the US trade court ruling against American President Donald Trump 's reciprocal tariffs is upheld? If that happens, it could necessitate the Trump administration to refund billions in import duties that have already been collected! On Wednesday, the US Court of International Trade (CIT) panel, comprising three judges, determined that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not authorise Trump to implement extensive tariffs or circumvent Congress's traditional authority over economic and commerce policies. Trump had referenced this 1977 legislation to validate most of his tariff implementations, particularly those announced on "'Liberation Day' in early April. According to a NewsWeek report, Todd Tucker, a trade specialist from the Roosevelt Institute in New York, shared on BlueSky on Thursday: "This will do tremendous damage to Trump's agenda. His whole second term seemed to be DOGE, deport, and (trade) deals." He further questioned: "On trade, in particular, why would any country waste time negotiating to lower his tariffs if he can't impose them in the first place?" The government has lodged an appeal with the Court of Appeals of the Federal Circuit, describing the CIT's decision as a "judicial coup." Experts suggest alternative methods remain available for Trump to implement his trade policies in response to the ruling. Will Trump Be Forced To Refund? The NewsWeek report said that if the ruling is upheld it could mean the Trump administration will have to reimburse the substantial import duties already collected. Whilst The Kobeissi Letter assessed collected tariff revenue at $10 billion since April 2, Newsweek's examination of Treasury Department records indicates potentially larger amounts. Even Elon Musk is concerned "I think that the court's order should lead CBP (US Customs and Border Protection) to suspend liquidation of entries going forward, which would mean that if the court's decision is ultimately upheld, importers can get their money back," stated William Reinsch, who served as under secretary of commerce for export administration during the Clinton administration and led the National Foreign Trade Council from 2001 to 2016. Importers, including American companies and overseas exporters who are bound by contract to pay import duties, might qualify for refunds. However, according to Reinsch's statement to Newsweek, consumers are "probably not" likely to receive any refunds following the CIT's ruling, despite having paid higher prices for imported products in recent months. "The people who paid the tariffs—the importers—might get their money back, but they would not be obligated to pass that on to consumers, although some might choose to do so as a matter of goodwill," he explained. He further expressed doubt about the success of any potential legal action by consumers against the government for compensation. According to the report, legal experts suggest that importers could potentially take legal action against the administration for goods that have already cleared customs procedures. The administration under Trump has recognised its obligation to reimburse specific tariff payments in cases where duties are subsequently eliminated or reduced. Following a decision in late April that determined certain tariffs should not be 'stacked' or applied cumulatively, Trump issued an executive order stating this would have retroactive application to particular tariffs. The order also confirmed that reimbursements for those who had paid increased import duties would be handled according to existing laws and standard CBP refund procedures. When announcements were made regarding exemptions to Trump's reciprocal tariffs, similar details were provided. The CBP has also issued instructions detailing how importers can seek refunds for duty payments on items where tariffs were later withdrawn or decreased. Tariff Impact: $34 billion losses and counting…and counting.. Meanwhile, corporate disclosures reveal that Trump's trade policies have resulted in companies losing more than $34 billion through decreased sales and increased expenses, as per Reuters' evaluation. This impact is likely to grow as businesses struggle with uncertainty surrounding tariffs, affecting operational decisions at major global corporations. Prominent organisations across three continents have seen significant setbacks. Notable examples include Apple, Ford, Porsche and Sony, which have either withdrawn or substantially reduced their profit projections. Most companies indicate that the unpredictable implementation of Trump's trade measures has rendered precise cost calculations unfeasible. The combined total of $33 billion represents calculations from 32 S&P 500 firms, three STOXX 600 enterprises and 21 Nikkei 225 organisations. According to financial experts, the actual business impact is expected to significantly exceed the currently reported figures. "You can double or triple your tally and we'd still say ... the magnitude is bound to be far greater than most people realize," said Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, professor at the Yale School of Management, according to the Reuters report. The broader implications could prove more severe, Sonnenfeld noted, pointing to possible reductions in consumer and business expenditure, alongside heightened inflation projections. UK Support For All-Party Delegation Derails ISI's Disruption Attempt

Last Updated: During the event, groups of ISI-backed Khalistani protesters attempted to stage a demonstration at the Indian High Commission in London. An all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, which arrived in London on Saturday to reiterate India's zero-tolerance stance on terrorism, received massive support from the members of the Indian diaspora. CNN-News18 learnt that over 1500 members of the diaspora rallied in support of the Indian delegation's mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terror activities, in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people. The delegation, comprising political and diplomatic representatives, is visiting the UK to hold key meetings with local authorities and global stakeholders. Their focus is to highlight the atrocities committed by Pakistan-backed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, particularly its involvement in the Pahalgam attack and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks — one of the deadliest terror strikes in India's history that also claimed the lives of several foreign nationals. According to top intelligence sources, the delegation aims to present credible evidence and context on Lashkar's operations, its Pakistan-based support network, and its continued threat to regional and global peace. 'The number of Indian people who reached the High Commission is really amazing. Usually on a Sunday, people don't come out of their homes, given the next working day. Around 1500 people have come, and the numbers are increasing every minute," Kuldeep Shekhawat, President of the Europe Chapter of Overseas Friends of India, told CNN-News18. ISI-Backed Disruption During the event, groups of ISI-backed Khalistani protesters attempted to stage a demonstration at the Indian High Commission in London. Denied permission at the premises, the protesters shifted to Trafalgar Square, waving Khalistani flags and banners. Top intelligence officials termed this move 'a desperate attempt by Pakistan's ISI" to deflect attention from its support to terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. 'This is a clear attempt by Pakistan to change the narrative. With international pressure mounting over its links to terror, the ISI is using proxy elements to disrupt diplomatic efforts and mislead public perception," said a senior intelligence source to CNN-News18. Despite these efforts, the Indian delegation's outreach has drawn strong support from the global Indian community, reflecting unified condemnation of terrorism and growing awareness about state-sponsored extremist networks operating from Pakistan. The all-party delegation, led by Prasad, also comprises MPs Daggubati Purandeswari, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Ghulam Ali Khatana, Amar Singh, Samik Bhattacharya, M Thambidurai and former Union minister of state MJ Akbar and Ambassador Pankaj Saran.
