Manivannan takes over as BDA commissioner, Mohandas Pai calls him ‘action-oriented'
In a key bureaucratic reshuffle, the Karnataka government on Friday appointed senior IAS officer Manivannan P. as the new Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).
According to a report by The Hindu, a 1998-batch officer, Manivannan will take over with concurrent charge while continuing as the Principal Secretary of the Social Welfare Department.
His appointment, effective May 31, comes as the current BDA Commissioner Jayaram N. is set to retire on the same day, the report added.
The BDA, often at the centre of criticism over Bengaluru's chaotic urban expansion, is currently grappling with multiple challenges. One of its flagship projects, the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, has seen sluggish progress, and residents continue to complain of poor infrastructure.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently announced that the skydeck project, part of the city's broader development push, will take shape within this very layout in Kengeri.
The BDA, along with the BBMP, has also faced backlash for approving layouts and constructions without ensuring adequate infrastructure, thereby contributing to urban sprawl and civic stress in India's tech capital.

The appointment has drawn attention from public figures and civic commentators.
Prominent Bengaluru-based entrepreneur and investor Mohandas Pai welcomed the decision on X (formerly Twitter), saying, 'Thank you very much Rao avare. Your constant Indus film is very needed. Pai's endorsement reflects a broader hope among citizens that Manivannan's track record of proactive governance will bring new energy and accountability to the BDA.
Manivannan has previously held key roles across departments in Karnataka, and his appointment comes at a time when Bengaluru's planning agencies are under increased scrutiny for their role in shaping the city's future.

If that happens, it could necessitate the Trump administration to refund billions in import duties that have already been collected! On Wednesday, the US Court of International Trade (CIT) panel, comprising three judges, determined that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not authorise Trump to implement extensive tariffs or circumvent Congress's traditional authority over economic and commerce policies. Trump had referenced this 1977 legislation to validate most of his tariff implementations, particularly those announced on "'Liberation Day' in early April. According to a NewsWeek report, Todd Tucker, a trade specialist from the Roosevelt Institute in New York, shared on BlueSky on Thursday: "This will do tremendous damage to Trump's agenda. His whole second term seemed to be DOGE, deport, and (trade) deals." UK Support For All-Party Delegation Derails ISI's Disruption Attempt

CNN-News18 learnt that over 1500 members of the diaspora rallied in support of the Indian delegation's mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terror activities, in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people. The delegation, comprising political and diplomatic representatives, is visiting the UK to hold key meetings with local authorities and global stakeholders. Their focus is to highlight the atrocities committed by Pakistan-backed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, particularly its involvement in the Pahalgam attack and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks — one of the deadliest terror strikes in India's history that also claimed the lives of several foreign nationals. According to top intelligence sources, the delegation aims to present credible evidence and context on Lashkar's operations, its Pakistan-based support network, and its continued threat to regional and global peace. 'The number of Indian people who reached the High Commission is really amazing. Usually on a Sunday, people don't come out of their homes, given the next working day. Around 1500 people have come, and the numbers are increasing every minute," Kuldeep Shekhawat, President of the Europe Chapter of Overseas Friends of India, told CNN-News18. Despite these efforts, the Indian delegation's outreach has drawn strong support from the global Indian community, reflecting unified condemnation of terrorism and growing awareness about state-sponsored extremist networks operating from Pakistan.
