There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles
Constructors: Olivia Mitra Framke & Sally Hoelscher
Editor: Amanda Rafkin
Olivia: Due to a sugar intolerance, I no longer eat OREOs (the brand "Highkey" makes a great sugar free alternative!) but I still have love for them because of their handiness in crosswords. It's fun to give back to this crossword classic; maybe this'll be the beginning of a fad of highlighting other crossword mainstays like ERIE, ARIA, OSLO, and ANTE! 😉 Thanks Sally for another great one!
Sally: This puzzle was the result of Olivia thinking about OREO-themed puzzles at two in the morning and me realizing that I've written about a number of hidden anagram themes lately. Thanks to Olivia for another fun collaboration!
ITALIA (15A: Paese di 55-Across) and ROMA (55A: Capitale di 15-Across) It's just coincidence that we ended up with ITALIA (Italian for Italy) and ROMA (Italian for Rome) both in the grid, but since we did, it was fun to clue them together. "Paese de" is Italian for "country of," and "capitale di" is Italian for "capital of."
I DO (16A: Probable response to "Who wants some chocolate?") and GODIVA (2D: Chocolate brand named for a Lady) I DO is frequently clued in reference to wedding vows, and there's nothing wrong with that. But since I DO crosses GODIVA in the grid, it was fun to change things up a little bit. Also, if you are near me and say, "Who wants some chocolate?" I am definitely going to say, "I DO!"
LICORICE ROOT (19A: Plant part whose extract flavors candy) In addition to chocolate, I would also accept LICORICE.
GRETA (24A: "The Climate Book" author Thunberg) GRETA Thunberg staged her first climate strike protest in August 2018. Since then, her activism helped raise awareness of the climate crisis. For her book, The Climate Book, which was published in 2022, she brought together over one hundred experts who contributed essays focusing on climate change.
DARTH (28A: Title for Vader or Maul) What would an Olivia / Sally collab be without a Star Wars clue? DARTH Vader is the name assumed by Anakin Skywalker after he is lured over to the dark side of the force. DARTH Maul is a powerful Sith Lord who made his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace (1999).
THEATER (30A: Place to see "Come From Away") I love the THEATER, particularly musical THEATER, so I was in a bit of a quandary about what show to feature in this clue. Come From Away is an incredible musical about the true story of the 38 planes that landed in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland following the September 11 attacks. The focus is on the people - those on the planes and in the town - and their responses and reactions to this unexpected event. Come From Away is one of my top five favorite musicals, and I'm happy to give it a shoutout here.
FLOOR EXERCISE (37A: Event for which Simone Biles has two Olympic medals) Simone Biles won a gold medal for FLOOR EXERCISE at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, she won a silver medal in FLOOR EXERCISE.
TULIP (45A: Netherlands bloom) The Netherlands, informally referred to as Holland, is a country in northwestern Europe. The Netherlands are the major producer of TULIPs for world markets.
SERTA (50A: Mattress brand whose ads feature talking sheep) The SERTA mattress company is known for its commercials featuring counting sheep. According to SERTA, the idea for the SERTA sheep came from an ad executive who was having trouble sleeping because he hadn't purchased a SERTA mattress yet.
EUROPE (59A: Alhambra's continent) Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain, which is of course, in EUROPE. Alhambra is considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in EUROPE. The palace also contains examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture.
ESTE (69A: Direction opposite oeste) Here's a review of Spanish directions: norte, sur, ESTE, and oeste (north, south, east, and west).
LOVIN' (5D: "You've Lost That ___ Feeling") "You've Lost That LOVIN' Feeling" (whoa that LOVIN' feeling...) was first recorded in 1964 by the Righteous Brothers. The song has been covered by numerous artists since then. The song experienced increased popularity when it was used in the 1986 movie Top Gun. I admit, that Top Gun scene is what I always think of when I hear this song.
EAR (12D: Play it by ___) "Let's play it by EAR" was something my dad used to say while tugging on his EAR. This phrase always makes me think of him.
ON T (20D: Using Testopel, for example) ON T here stands for "ON Testosterone." Testopel is a brand name of a testosterone pellet implant that delivers drug over three to four months.
ROTTEN (21D: "Something ___" (musical with the song "A Musical") I was so happy to get not one, but two musical references in this puzzle. Something ROTTEN is (in my opinion) an extremely funny musical that pokes fun at the whole notion of musicals. Set in 1595, it tells the story of the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, as they seek success in the theatrical world while competing with William Shakespeare. Something Rotten also contains several songs that make me laugh every time I listen to them. My favorite is called "A Musical."
HBO (29D: "The White Lotus" network) I have previously written about The White Lotus. The third season of the show is currently underway on HBO.
AXE (35D: Paul Bunyan's tool) In American and Canadian folklore, Paul Bunyan is a giant lumberjack (who uses an AXE).
CAT (40D: Calico pet) I like this clue because it has somewhat of a double meaning. When I wrote the clue, I was thinking of my calico CAT, Willow. Olivia then left a note on the spreadsheet saying "love this game." Oh, yeah, Calico is also a board game – which I have, of course! – that features quilts and CATs. Here's a picture of my calico. The basket Willow is sitting in in this photo is the one that contains her toys. I guess she couldn't decide what to play with, so she just crawled in on top of them.
LOOSEN (47D: Turn a screw to the left) The mnemonic "Righty tighty, lefty loosey" is one I use frequently to remember which way to turn screws, bottle caps, etc.
WOOFS (53D: Alerts from dogs) We're giving equal time to CATs and dogs today.
TRUST (54D: ___ fall (team-building activity)) My apologies if the mere thought of a TRUST fall makes you shudder (as it does me).
OTOE (58D: Chiwere speakers) The OTOE are indigenous people of the Midwestern United States. Their language, Chiwere, is part of the Siouan family of languages.
LICORICE ROOT (19A: Plant part whose extract flavors candy)
FLOOR EXERCISE (37A: Event for which Simone Biles has two Olympic medals)
METEOROLOGY (56A: Study of weather)
THAT'S THE WAY THE COOKIE CRUMBLES: Each theme answer contains an anagram of OREO: LICORICE ROOT, FLOOR EXERCISE, and METEOROLOGY.
Consider this puzzle to be Olivia and my ode to crossword's favorite cookie, the OREO. After coming up with the idea for this theme, we discovered that finding theme answers with three different hidden OREO anagrams was a bit of a challenge. We're happy with the theme answers we ended up with. Thanks to Amanda for her help along the way, and for her excellent editing as always. I hope you enjoyed this puzzle.

Beckham scores a winner with the royal circle

David Beckham looks set to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, but the ex-footballer has already become a very visible part of the royal circle. It can feel sometimes, in football terms, as if Beckham has been man-marking the royals, as he's become an ever-present at royal occasions. The Chelsea Flower Show, a Buckingham Palace state banquet, an Italian dinner at Highgrove, charity events, have all seen the Beckhams in the line-up of guests to meet the royals. Last month, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, wore a dress designed by Victoria Beckham at a British Fashion Council event. There is an independent honours committee that considers who should get awards such as knighthoods, rather than the royals. But if he becomes "Sir David", the ceremony won't be the first time he'll have met the royals. There is already a close relationship. At the recent Chelsea Flower Show, a conversation between the King and Queen and Beckham seemed to hint at birthday gifts being exchanged. "Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses," Queen Camilla seemed to be saying about this flowering relationship. It's not just roses he's cultivating, as David Beckham has some new shared passions with the royals, a long way from his days as a footballer. He swapped "bee-keeping tips" with King Charles at a meeting at his Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire last year. Beckham set to be awarded knighthood Rugby league anger at no knighthoods in 130 years 'East End boy' Beckham helps with Prince William fundraiser The former England star has become an enthusiastic environmentalist, taking on the role of ambassador for the King's Foundation, which promotes traditional crafts. "Having developed a love for the countryside I'm also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation's work," said Beckham. He attended an awards ceremony run by the King's Foundation at St James's Palace where he was teased by another guest, Sir Rod Stewart, who told Beckham that his knighthood "was coming soon". That could prove far-sighted of Sir Rod if the current speculation is correct. At the awards event, Beckham showed his versatility, manning an exhibition about bringing together science, technology and nature, including a display of hand knitting using Dumfries House wool. As a footballer he must have rarely played so many different positions. For the royals, Beckham has plenty of authentic star appeal, developing a post-football identity as a celebrity involved in charity projects. His iconic sporting status is strong enough to attract public attention and he's supported many different causes. For an air ambulance fundraiser last year, it was Beckham that Prince William asked to help successfully raise £15m. "I had to hide my excitement a little bit," said Beckham afterwards about being asked to get involved. It was once considered important to keep honours a secret until they were officially announced, but details of this award seems to have emerged early, even though there is no official confirmation from the Cabinet Office, the government department that oversees honours. The news of "Sir David" might raise concerns among other sports, who will be looking out for their own stars in next week's honours. Rugby league authorities and supporters have complained that their sport has never had a single knighthood or damehood in 130 years. There have also been challenges about whether top honours are being given to the most deserving. But in terms of David Beckham's long wait for a knighthood - if they thought it was all over, it is now. 'The Bachelorette' Alum Jillian Harris Celebrates Bachelorette Party After 8-Year Engagement

Jillian Harris revealed she recently celebrated her bachelorette party at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Canada ahead of her fall nuptials 15 of her closest loved ones attended the events, which included dinners, canoeing and dancing Harris and fiancé Justin Pasutto are set to tie the knot in Europe in Fall 2025Jillian Harris is celebrating her soon-to-be wedding with loved ones. The Bachelorette alum, 45, shared a look at her bachelorette party — eight years in the making — ahead of her European nuptials with fiancé Justin Pasutto. 'After eight years of being engaged, I finally had my Bachelorette party, and here's how it went…,' she wrote over a video showing her and her friends throwing off their cowboy hats in celebration in front of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Canada. Clips showed that the girls decorated the space with the words 'Last Hoedown,' and Harris even had a white 'bride' cowboy hat for the occasion. She showed a bartender pouring cocktails and the girls sharing drinks and dancing. Additional clips showed them doing yoga and taking a dip in a lake. 'All of my favorite things, we did it all,' Harris said in the video, as she and her closest loved ones got into a canoe and rowed down a lake. The girls also chomped down on several different meals and drank wine. 'Going back to my Alberta roots with 15 of my besties was exactly what my soul needed,' she captioned the post. 'We made so many unforgettable memories. From the yummiest food, to morning pilates and canoeing on the lake, dancing to country music, singing, belly laughing, and stories we'll be telling for years.' 'Honestly, I couldn't have imagined a better way to celebrate this next chapter surrounded by the people who are so special to me. My heart is SO full.🤠🫶🏼🥹🏔️🥂👰🏽‍♀️ #hosted,' she concluded her caption. Harris confirmed earlier this week that she and Pasutto were planning a 2025 European wedding after eight years of being engaged. The couple met in 2012, got engaged in December 2016 and share two children: 8-year-old Leo and 6-year-old daughter Annie. They had initially planned for a Summer 2020 wedding, but postponed it due to COVID. Then, while the couple was planning a family trip to Europe to celebrate Harris' mom's 70th birthday in 2024, she had an idea to 'just get married' there. They eventually postponed it one more time, landing on a Fall 2025 wedding date. "Yeah, it's going to happen. We were going to pull it off this fall, and everything was looking great, and we told everybody that was in our wedding party and the people that were coming that it was happening," Pasutto told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview last summer. Harris chimed in, saying that the couple was "excited" for the big day, particularly since they've settled on a location. "Justin is Italian, and I love Europe," she shared. "We just couldn't think of anywhere that felt right, and when we're there, we just love the bread and the cheese and the music and the laid-back culture, and it just feels like you could do something a little bit more laid-back there. And we love traveling, so that is the plan." Read the original article on People

4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: June 6

Every Friday, our editors compile a trusty list of recommendations to answer the most pressing of questions: 'Where should I eat?' Here now are four places to check out this weekend in Los Angeles. And if you need some ideas on where to drink, here's our list of the hottest places to get cocktails in town. For a great pizza (practically) anywhere in LA: Prime Pizza LA's pizza scene has grown substantially in recent years, with shops around town serving New York-style slices, square pies, New Haven-style pizza, and practically every other style under the sun. However, many LA pizza shops have only a single location, making them more of a neighborhood destination than a widely accessible option for pizza night takeout or delivery. Prime is among those outstanding pizza parlors in LA, but it has locations across the city, making it easy to grab a slice no matter what part of town one is in. The vodka pizza is a standout among the round pies, topped with mozzarella, basil, and Parmesan. Square pies consist of a simple grandma pie, a Sicilian, a spicy pepperoni, and a meat lover's. Prime even offers gluten-free crusts for those avoiding wheat. 1900 Allen Avenue, Altadena, CA 91001. — Rebecca Roland, editor, Southern California/Southwest For a gorgeous Italian patio vibe in the middle of residential Mar Vista: Beethoven Market One of the loveliest dinners I've had in recent memory, at least in terms of pure ambience, was at Beethoven Market, a neighborhood gem right in Mar Vista's residential expanse. Restaurateur Jeremy Adler has made a name overseeing some of the Westside's busiest spots, like Santa Monica's Cobi's, working for years to transform this former bodega into a community hub. On this front, Beethoven is overwhelmingly successful, perhaps to the chagrin of some neighbors who were happy to park their cars in our spots upon departing. But the benefit of a breezy, casual hangout like this must surely compensate for the traffic. Chef Michael Leonard serves a familiar California Italian menu of fried squash blossoms, blimp-shaped fried arancini, personal-sized pizzas, and medium-sized pastas. Evan Funke fans will find a lot of similar dishes here, such as grilled prawns in salsa verde, linguini al limone, burrata panzanella, and pesto-laden foglie d'Ulivo. Beethoven does venture in a different direction with the pizzas, sporting pillowy soft New York-esque crusts that offer a sweet fragrance, and the grilled sea bass over an herbaceous Sicilian tarragon sauce doesn't have a tangle of shredded fennel slices like at Mother Wolf. For dessert, be sure to share the excellent housemade gelati. Most people coming to Beethoven probably won't mind the similarities, and there's something to be said about the very reasonable pricing here (pastas are all under $20, pizzas max out at $23, a good meal can be had for under $75 a person before drinks). And LA has never been a city to ever tire of California-Italian food. 12904 Palms Boulevard, Mar Vista, CA, 90066. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest For an easy breakfast in Virgil Village: Virgil Cafe Lines at Courage and Sqirl may never truly die down, but Virgil Village now has another option for a more easygoing breakfast or brunch. Virgil Cafe is an unassuming breakfast spot near the intersection of Virgil and Melrose, serving all the classics like French toast, pancakes, and eggs, alongside huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, and breakfast burritos. The interior is no-frills, but service is warm and quick, and the portion sizes are very generous. Fresh-pressed juices and smoothies are also available, like a green juice and a peanut butter and banana smoothie. During the daytime, Virgil Cafe serves more lunch-y dishes, including a tlayuda, a mushroom burger, and fajitas. 709 Virgil Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029. — Rebecca Roland, editor, Southern California/Southwest For killer arroz chaufa and a la brasa chicken: Rosty Peruvian Rosty Peruvian owner Maritza Gomez hails from Peruvian restaurant royalty. Gomez's mother, Alis Reañ, owned two notable Lima restaurants called Listo de Pollo. Listo de Pollo opened in 1969 and closed permanently in 1993, while a young Gomez and her sisters (Carmen and Flor Bermudez also operate Rosty) learned the inner workings of a restaurant. The family debuted their Highland Park restaurant in 2018, which has some of the best Peruvian food in the city. It's a casual and friendly spot that serves lunch through dinner with an incredible arroz chaufa, a Peruvian fried rice that takes fairly uninteresting vegetables and makes them sing in a saucy, hearty mixture of herbs, tomatoes, and a healthy dose of onions. The addition of chicken makes it an incredibly filling meal, but it is absolutely stunning, even without protein. Traditional la brasa rotisserie chicken is available, but go beyond and try everything, especially the fried yucca, lomo saltado, and incredible ceviche that packs heat. The pescado frito is a filet that's deep-fried and served simply with salsa criolla, rice, and plantains. The best strategy is to go with a group, share, and enjoy every bite. 5511 N.
