Insurance firm that denied screen damage claim told to pay 75% of mobile phone cost by consumer forum

Time of India24-07-2025
Ghaziabad: The district consumer forum has asked an insurance company to reimburse 75% of the cost of a mobile phone, along with additional compensation of Rs 5,000 to a senior citizen who had purchased additional screen damage coverage when he bought the phone.
Anjana Mittal (67), a Kavinagar resident, had bought the insurance policy alongside the phone in June 2023. When the phone's screen got damaged on the day the insurance plan was expiring, she wasted no time in approaching the seller for a replacement. After being denied a replacement or repair, she filed a petition with the consumer forum in Aug 2024.
On July 19, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) ruled in favour of the complainants, Anjana and her husband Vijay Mohan, directing the insurer, Zipcare Protect (owned by Infiniti Retail Limited), to pay the compensation amount within 45 days of the order.

Failing this, the consumer is entitled to claim interest at 6% per annum on the outstanding amount until final payment is made, it added.
Having issued a notice to the respondent and given them time to reply, the commission finally took up the matter ex parte and concluded that since the damage to the mobile screen was within the policy period and due information was given to the insurer in time, they committed a deficiency of service by not settling the claim.
"The respondent is entitled to get compensation on a 'notional basis' calculated at 75% of the cost of the mobile, which comes to Rs 50,324, and in addition, should also be compensated with a fine of Rs 5,000 for mental agony and litigation cost," the commission said.
The couple, in their petition, informed the commission that they bought a Vivo X-90 (12GB, 256GB) on June 3, 2023, after paying Rs 67,099.
"We were told that on paying additional Rs 6,300, the Zipcare Protect scheme would also cover any damage to the mobile screen during the policy period. But when we approached them for a replacement within the policy period, they refused to acknowledge any damage and kept refusing despite repeated complaints," the complainants said.

Probe found person with big headload fell on others, led to stampede at New Delhi station: Govt

A big headload falling from one of the passengers triggered the New Delhi railway station stampede that killed 18 people, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha on Friday (August 1, 2025). Also Read | Swelling crowd, continued sale of tickets led to stampede The Minister, in a written reply, shared the findings of the high-level committee constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the stampede this year on February 15. He said there was a gradual increase on passengers, many of whom were also carrying big headloads. Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman asked the Railway Minister about the status of the report of the committee constituted to investigate the stampede and the corrective steps taken by the government. Also Read | Eyewitnesses recall tragedy, say many collided and fell on stairs and escalators Mr. Vaishnaw said the high-level inquiry committee has submitted its report for consideration. "As per findings of the report, an unfortunate incident on 15.02.25 happened on foot overbridge-3 stairs connecting platform 14/15 at New Delhi railway station. On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station," he said. "There was a gradual increase of passengers density on the FOB after 8.15 pm. Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads affecting smooth movement on the FOB. 'There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15 stairs, resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 8.48 pm on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other." The Minister informed the House that in the incident, 18 people lost their lives and 15 others were injured. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh each to the grievously injured and Rs 1 lakh each to other injured has been paid. "Accordingly, a total amount of Rs 2.01 crore has been paid to 33 victims and their family members," Mr. Vaishnaw said. The Railway Minister said the government has taken several actions to handle the heavy rush of passengers at stations, including the creation of permanent holding areas and access control measures — allowing passengers with confirmed tickets — at 73 identified stations, widening foot overbridges, installing CCTV cameras, developing war rooms at big stations, among others.

Anil Ambani set to rise again, his debt free company now making good profits, earns Rs 600000000, company is....

Anil Ambani (File) Anil Ambani, once India's industrial titan, is currently going through a difficult time. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani for questioning on August 5 in a money laundering case linked to an alleged bank loan fraud worth crores of rupees against his group companies, official sources were quoted as saying by news agency PTI on Friday. The federal probe agency has also notified a Look Out Circular (LOC) against the 66-year-old businessman to stop him from travelling abroad, the sources said, PTI reported. He has been asked to depose at the ED headquarters in Delhi on August 5 as the case has been registered here. Moreover, the ED is also looking at allegations of 'illegal' loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crore, given by Yes Bank to the group companies of Ambani between 2017-2019. After the news broke, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure shares reportedly fell significantly. Overall, the market was in a selling mode. Amidst a series of difficult reports, there is some good news for Anil Ambani. His companies are planning a comeback. According to the ZeeNews report, Anil Ambani's company Reliance Infrastructure (Reliance Infra Shares) has turned from losses to profits. In the first quarter of FY26, it reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 59.84 crore, compared to a loss of Rs 233.74 crore for the same quarter of the previous financial year. Changing their strategies, Anil Ambani's companies are recovering. Earlier on Monday, shares of Reliance Infrastructure jumped over 4 per cent, reaching Rs 358 on the BSE. This jump came after the company reported a significant turnaround in performance, recording a record profit for the first quarter of FY26. The company declared it is now completely debt-free and has no dues to banks or financial institutions. Anil Ambani has altered his business paradigm, now focusing more on debt reduction. He paid off all the debts of Reliance Infrastructure and left the company completely debt-free. As the company began to get out of the debt trap, investor confidence began to return. It began receiving new orders, not just in India, but from abroad as well. This is the primary reason the company is transitioning from loss to profit, and the shares of Reliance Infra started showing signs of revival.

Delhi Court Issues Notice To Robert Vadra In Money Laundering Case Filed By ED

Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday issued a notice to Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in connection with a money laundering complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The development comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a new chargesheet on August 28. As part of the investigation, the ED has attached 43 immovable properties valued at Rs 37.64 crore, allegedly connected to Robert Vadra and his associated entities. Prosecution complaints have been filed against him and 10 others. The charge sheet, which pertains to an alleged illegal land deal in Shikohpur village, Gurugram, accuses Vadra and his company M/s Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. of purchasing 3.53 acres of land through fraudulent means. The ED has already attached 43 properties allegedly linked to Vadra and his firm, worth a total of Rs 37.64 crore, as part of the ongoing investigation. The case dates back to a 2008 FIR filed by Gurugram Police, which alleged that Vadra's company purchased land from M/s Onkareshwar Properties Pvt. Ltd. for Rs 7.5 crore using a false declaration. Just a few years later, in September 2012, Sky Light Hospitality sold the same land to real estate giant DLF Ltd. for Rs 58 crore, raising serious questions about the nature and legality of the transaction. The controversy deepened when Ashok Khemka, then Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records and Inspector-General of Registration in Haryana, cancelled the land mutation, declaring the transaction violative of state regulations. His actions at the time sparked a political firestorm and led to a prolonged legal and administrative scrutiny of land dealings involving political figures. Earlier on July 18, 2025, the Rouse Avenue Court had taken note of the ED's charge sheet and listed the matter for hearing. Presiding Special Judge Sushant Changotra had directed the court record keeper to verify all accompanying documents and provide a detailed report. The Enforcement Directorate is likely to press for further legal action in the hearing, potentially including the summoning of Vadra for questioning based on the charge sheet's findings. Opposition parties have accused the government of using investigative agencies for political purposes, while the ED maintains it is pursuing the case based on documentary evidence and financial trails.
