Young innovators rise: build ICT and AI solutions, shine at WTISD-HK 2025, hosted by the Communications Association of Hong Kong
This year's World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-HK) successfully concluded with a Prize Presentation Ceremony on May 17, 2025. In alignment with the theme, 'Enhance equality in our society with AI in communications', set by the International Telecommunication Union, the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) has collaborated with schools and the information and communication technology (ICT) sector to inspire students to develop innovative digital solutions addressing social challenges.
WTISD-HK 2025 featured two main activities: ICT Open Day and Proposal Competition. Both activities aligned with the theme of WTISD-HK 2025, attracting enthusiastic participation from over 300 Form Four to Six secondary school students as well as those in tertiary education.
The Communications Authority has continued to support WTISD-HK as the event sponsor this year. Lending their support as the site sponsors for the ICT Open Day were China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited (CMHK), Communications Authority, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, HGC Global Communications Limited, Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT), HKT Limited, and SmarTone, while Huawei sponsored the prizes given out at the Proposal Competition. The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) Academy served as the venue sponsor for the WTISD-HK 2025 Prize Presentation Ceremony.

About 210 students and teachers from 16 schools took full advantage of the ICT Open Day, forming guided tour groups to visit various organisations and companies. These tours provided students with an exclusive opportunity to participate in workshops and gain valuable insights from industry experts. By interacting with professionals and executives of the site sponsors, students gained deeper insights into how AI applications are advancing communications and benefiting society. The organisers and site sponsors were highly impressed by the students' maturity and insightful perspectives on AI communication technologies.
The ICT Open Day has played a vital role in inspiring secondary students to consider future careers in the ICT sector. CAHK extends its gratitude to the site sponsors for their unwavering support in making this event engaging and impactful for all participating students.
The Proposal Competition aimed to encourage students to develop innovative solutions that apply AI to telecommunications and communications. Centred around the theme, 'Enhance equality in our society with AI in communications', the competition motivated students to explore AI-driven solutions that promote equality in various aspects – including but not limited to education, social inclusion, economics, gender and race – while fostering a more equitable digital future within Hong Kong communities.
A judging panel of six industry executives and ICT experts reviewed the submissions and were highly impressed by their quality.

The judges praised the students' thorough research, insightful analysis of AI applications in both domestic and global contexts, and their ability to identify AI's potential for benefiting society. Each proposal demonstrated a deep understanding of AI's role in addressing societal challenges, with many students skilfully utilising presentation tools to enhance their work. The judges commended the students for their exceptional innovation and practical applications, recognising their forward-thinking approaches.

Spanning March and May, the two main activities organised by CAHK for WTISD-HK 2025 successfully engaged students, harnessing their creativity to develop AI-driven solutions for social challenges while exposing them to the ICT sector. CAHK will actively look after and mentor the next generation of potential ICT professionals.

Grab to sell US$1.25 bln in convertible bonds to fund purchases as GoTo takeover stalls
Grab Holdings is planning a US$1.25 billion sale of bonds convertible into stock, partly to bulk up its war chest for acquisitions amid signs that talks to take over rival delivery-and-transport provider GoTo Group have stalled. Singapore-based Grab, whose app is ubiquitous in Southeast Asia for ride hailing and food delivery, will issue convertible bonds that mature on June 15, 2030, it said in a statement on Monday. The securities will carry a coupon of as much as 0.5 per cent a year, payable semiannually, according to terms of the deal seen by Bloomberg News. Grab joins the flurry of sales of bonds that can be swapped into stock by Asian companies this year. That is particularly been the case with Chinese firms as issuers from Baidu to Ping An Insurance Group of China announced sizeable deals in recent months. Aside from possible acquisitions, Grab said it plans some share buy-backs – the company has US$274 million remaining under its share-repurchase programme as of the end of March. The bonds will be redeemable, under certain conditions, from mid-2028. As for the GoTo acquisition, Grab on Monday signalled that it was halting or at least pausing a planned US$7 billion acquisition. The pair of ride-hailing and food-delivery companies have held on-and-off talks for years, but a combination never materialised, partly because of antitrust concerns likely to arise from combining the two dominant players in Southeast Asia. Grab's offering is the largest Asian convertible-bond deal denominated in US dollars since Ping An's US$3.5 billion deal in July 2024, and the biggest by a non-Chinese company since Korean chipmaker SK Hynix's US$1.7 billion issuance in 2023. Ping An last week also issued convertible bonds worth US$1.5 billion, denominated in Hong Kong dollars.

As 2 Hong Kong art spaces seek new leaders, experts weigh in on the impact
Para Site and Asia Art Archive (AAA), two long-standing independent cultural institutions in Hong Kong, are simultaneously seeking new executive directors at a pivotal moment for the city's cultural scene. On June 2, Para Site in Quarry Bay announced that Billy Tang had stepped down as executive director and curator after concluding his three-year contract. The British-born former senior curator of Shanghai's Rockbund Art Museum took over from Cosmin Costinas – who had run Para Site for 11 years – in May 2022, just as Hong Kong lifted its Covid-19 pandemic ban on non-residents entering the city. Since then, the non-profit art space founded in 1996 has undergone major changes, such as embracing more environmentally friendly and longer-running exhibitions, and opening an additional exhibition space on the 10th floor of the building where it is based which has given emerging artists the chance to undertake more site-specific and interactive projects. Billy Tang stepped down as Para Site's director and curator on June 2, 2025. Meanwhile, AAA in Sheung Wan , which maintains an extensive art archive and runs regular public programmes and a well-used library, put up a job posting for a successor to Christopher K. Ho , who joined AAA as executive director in 2021.

US-China trade showdown: where do the talks stand after Day 1?
Top officials from China and the United States are expected to start a second day of negotiations in London on Tuesday morning local time, as the two sides strive to de-escalate a stand-off over trade and technology that has sent shock waves across the global economy. No official statements were released after the first round of talks on Monday, which finished without a deal being agreed. But both sides have sent signals regarding their expectations. US Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told CNBC that 'immediately after the handshake, any export controls from the US will be eased, and the rare earths will be released in volume, and then we can go back to negotiating smaller matters'. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, US President Donald Trump authorised the American delegation to negotiate away recent restrictions on the sale of advanced technologies and other products to China ahead of the London talks. The recent US export controls cover jet engines and related parts, though these were never publicly announced by Washington; design software Chinese companies need to make advanced microchips; and ethane, a component of natural gas that is used to manufacture plastics, the report said.
