Notable Speech, Ruling Court lead Godolphin charge at Royal Ascot

Gulf Today17-06-2025
Notable Speech and Ruling Court, the two most recent winners of the G1 2,000 Guineas, headline an imposing Godolphin team for the opening day of Royal Ascot on Tuesday.
Dubawi colt Notable Speech decisively beat Rosallion in the 2024 edition of the Newmarket Classic but could only finish sixth behind the same horse in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting last year.
The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old rebounded on his next start with a scintillating display in the G1 Sussex Stakes, before ending his campaign with a valiant third in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile.
Notable Speech and Rosallion face each other again in a deep renewal of the G1 Queen Anne Stakes, having come home third and fourth behind Lead Artist and Dancing Gemini, who also reoppose, in last month's G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
Trainer Charlie Appleby said: 'Notable Speech comes into this in great order and we are looking forward to seeing him on the straight track at Ascot. The Lockinge was his first start of the year, and he has definitely come forward for the run. Conditions are there to suit him and it looks a fantastic race to kick off the meeting.'
Stablemate Ruling Court also faces a rematch with a Guineas runner-up as he takes on Field Of Gold again in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes. Half a length separated the duo at Newmarket, with Field Of Gold going on to frank the form in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas. Ruling Court was an intended runner in the G1 Derby earlier in the month but missed the race due to the good to soft ground.
Appleby said: 'We took Ruling Court out of the Derby due to the ground, and we can have no excuses with conditions at Ascot. It's a very good renewal of the race and the track and trip will suit. We are looking at stepping up in trip at some point, but he has done very little wrong over a mile so far.'
Unbeaten colt Military Code makes a first Pattern-race appearance in the week's leading contest for two-year-olds, the G2 Coventry Stakes. Following a winning introduction at Newmarket's Craven meeting, the Appleby-trained son of Wootton Bassett gamely defied a penalty at Ascot last month.
Appleby said: 'Military Code's form is rock solid and we are looking forward to stepping him up to six furlongs. He has put up two strong performances to date, including one under a penalty, and should hopefully be very competitive at this level.'
Both of Godolphin's contenders for the Listed Wolferton Stakes have scored at a higher level, with Military Order annexing the 2024 G3 Winter Derby for Appleby. Passion And Glory, successful in the G3 Glorious Stakes in 2021, is hoping to continue his perfect record at Ascot for Saeed Bin Suroor, having won on both his previous course appearances.
Appleby said: 'Military Order is in great shape and I'm keen to see how he goes on a quicker surface. If he can translate the best of his all-weather form to Ascot, I think he will be an interesting runner.'
Bin Suroor said: 'Passion And Glory likes the course at Ascot and did a nice piece of work on Friday. I think coming back to a mile and a quarter is going to suit and I am looking for a good run.'
Endless Victory, a full-brother to Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter, steps up to a mile and six furlongs for the closing Copper Horse Handicap. Both of the four-year-old's victories for Appleby have come over 10 furlongs, and a first appearance over a mile and a half at Meydan on his latest outing proved inconclusive. Appleby said: 'This trip is a question mark for Endless Victory, although we are hoping that it brings some improvement.
'You can put a line through his latest start at Meydan, when things just didn't happen for him. He has had a nice break since and goes here fit and well. All the handicaps at Royal Ascot require a lot of luck in running but, if he gets the splits and improves for the trip, he should be very competitive.'

Rebel's Romance claims Grosser Preis von Berlin to register eighth G1 victory

Rebel's Romance recorded his eighth G1 victory and captured the Grosser Preis von Berlin for a second time as he comfortably beat Junko at Hoppegarten on Sunday. Godolphin's most decorated horse was returning to the German course having secured his first top-level success in the same race in 2022, the first of four G1 wins in the country. A superb international campaigner, Rebel's Romance has also gone on to major victories in the United States, where he has won two editions of the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, the UAE, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UK. With Billy Loughnane coming in for the ride, Rebel's Romance broke alertly from his wide draw and the Charlie Appleby-trained seven-year-old tacked over to race in a length second behind Junko. Rebel's Romance closed to within half a length of Junko leaving the back and loomed up on the outside to press for the lead at the top of the straight. Junko rallied after Rebel's Romance established a narrow advantage a furlong and a half out but could not respond to the Godolphin homebred in the closing strides, with three-quarters of a length separating the duo at the line. The victory proved a landmark for Rebel's Romance's sire Dubawi, who has been responsible for 250 Black Type wins in the Godolphin colours. Rebel's Romance is now the most prolific Group winner in the royal blue silks, with 14 Pattern race successes to his name and prize money in excess of £11m, while Billy Loughnane was celebrating a first G1 success in his career. Hugh Anderson, Managing Director of Godolphin (UK and Dubai), said: 'It has been a brilliant afternoon and congratulations to Hoppegarten for a wonderful meeting. It means so much, first for Billy as a young man to win a G1 is fabulous, while Rebel's Romance is a superstar. 'It has been a tremendous weekend and I look forward to talking to our principal, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who will be delighted, as we all are.' Charlie Appleby said: 'What more can you say about Rebel's Romance? He writes his own story. I am delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and team Godolphin, to have a horse who continues to give us such enjoyment at the top level. 'It's a great occasion for Billy, and I'm sure this will be the first of many G1 winners. For him to be able to get his first on a horse like Rebel's Romance, I'm sure it will be a very memorable day. 'I'm delighted for the team, and the story keeps going for Rebel's Romance. It's most likely that he will head for the Canadian International next, and we will form a plan when El Cordobes and Nations Pride return from Saratoga following their runs in the Sword Dancer Stakes.' Billy Loughnane said: 'It's a feeling I can't describe, a feeling of ecstasy. I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and having the opportunity to sit on a horse like this. A big thanks to Will [Buick], I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. Rebel's Romance is a star of a horse' El Cordobes flashes home to take G1 Sword Dancer Stakes El Cordobes enjoyed a perfect US debut as he unleashed a late surge to capture the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 9 August. The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old headed across the Atlantic for his first top-level appearance on the back of several strong efforts in the UK, including winning the G2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival. Vote No was pushed along into an early lead in the 12-furlong contest, with El Cordobes settling on the inner rail in third behind stablemate Nations Pride, until Far Bridge rushed up to go second after the first three furlongs. El Cordobes continued to save ground on the inside, with Padiddle and Rebel Red shuffling the Godolphin runner back to a close sixth halfway down the back. Nations Pride took up the running turning in and soon opened up daylight over the field, with William Buick kicking into a three-length lead approaching the final furlong.

Shadow Of Light leads trio targeting G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest glory

Champion Two-Year-Old Shadow Of Light, emerging sprinter Symbol Of Honour and G1-winning miler Tribalist provide Godolphin with three strong chances in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest on Sunday. Shadow Of Light makes a second straight appearance at Deauville for Charlie Appleby after finishing a close fourth in a blanket finish to last month's G1 Prix Jean Prat. Winner of the G1 Middle Park Stakes and G1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes in 2024, the Lope de Vega colt was third behind Ruling Court in this season's G1 2,000 Guineas before finding the ground too fast in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, in which he was fifth. Shadow Of Light stands out as one of Godolphin's brightest prospects—a homebred colt boasting an exceptional pedigree and a track record of success at Group 1 level. Stablemate Symbol Of Honour has notched up four wins over six furlongs in the UAE and the UK this season, including gamely taking the G2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park in May. The son of Havana Grey was beaten around three lengths in total when coming home eighth in Newmarket's G1 July Cup on his latest outing. Tribalist is the most experienced runner in the field, although the Farhh entire has spent the vast majority of his career over a mile, notably defeating a top-class field in last season's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Trained by Andre Fabre, Tribalist has lined up over six furlongs at Deauville in the last two renewals of the G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis and finished third after making the running in this year's edition in July. Charlie Appleby said: 'We are slightly watching the weather for both horses, who head to Deauville in good shape. 'Symbol Of Honour ideally wants a sound surface, whereas Shadow Of Light wouldn't want it too quick. 'Shadow Of Light has run solid races all year without getting his head in front, and this should be a nice distance for him. We are hopeful that, if he can run up to his best two-year-old form, it will make him very competitive. 'Symbol Of Honour ran a very creditable race in the July Cup and I feel that the six and a half furlongs here will be a good trip for him,' he added. Louise Benard of Godolphin said: 'Tribalist's optimum trip is slightly further than this distance, but we were very happy with his run in the Prix de Ris-Orangis, when he had a good lesson over Deauville's straight course. He will probably be ridden at a pace where he is comfortable, and we are hoping for the best against some strong opposition.' Dance To The Music seeks Sweet result at Newmarket: Promising debut winner Dance To The Music is set to take a significant step up in both class and trip as she lines up for the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket's July Course on Saturday. The talented two-year-old daughter of Dubawi, and full-sister to Group 1 Prix de la Foret winner Space Blues, made an eye-catching start to her career with a composed victory in a six-furlong fillies' maiden on the Rowley Mile back in May. Despite showing signs of inexperience, she managed to power through the field and claim victory by a length—an effort that has since gained even more credibility with form being franked by her rivals. Trainer Appleby is confident that the step up to seven furlongs will bring out even more in the progressive filly. Speaking ahead of the race, Appleby said: 'The form of Dance To The Music's maiden win has worked out well and stepping up to seven furlongs will definitely suit. She looks in great order and should be a leading player.' With her pedigree, performance, and preparation all pointing in the right direction, Dance To The Music will be one to watch closely as she takes on some of the most promising fillies of her generation in what promises to be a competitive renewal of the Sweet Solera Stakes.

Dubai dominance on display as curtain comes down on Glorious Goodwood

Glorious Goodwood, an annual spectacle of world-class racing in Sussex, England, lived up to its name as Dubai-owned horses once again made a significant impact at the prestigious festival, which was established two centuries ago in 1802. After Dubai Treasure struck for Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor on the opening day with a hard-fought victory in the EBF Fillies' Handicap under two-time champion jockey Oisin Murphy, it was a Dubai-flavoured final day's racing with three more winners flying the flag for the emirate in front of a stellar crowd. One of the most significant victories came in the Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes, where Al Aasy, running in the iconic blue and white silks of Shadwell Estate, stormed home under Jim Crowley for trainer William Haggas. The win was a poignant reminder of the lasting legacy of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, former Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, who acquired Shadwell in 1981 and transformed it into one of the world's most successful and respected racing operations. Later in the day, Crowley and Shadwell doubled their delight with Mudbir, who delivered a smart win in the Whispering Angel Handicap, proving the depth of talent in the Newmarket-based operation's current string, owned and managed by Sheikha Hissa bint Hamdan Al Maktoum since 2021 following the passing of her father Sheikh Hamdan. Adding to the Dubai treble was Waardah, a rising filly who made her mark in the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes over a mile and six furlongs. Owned by Major General Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security, and trained by Owen Burrows in Lambourn, Berkshire, the 'Valley of the Racehorse', Waardah showed class and stamina in equal measure, to give Dubai connections their third winner of the day. These victories showcased Dubai's strong influence and continued investment in top-tier horse racing, while also honouring the passion of the late Sheikh Hamdan and the Maktoum family's enduring dedication to the global racing world. Over the next three weeks, Ireland takes centre stage with a packed calendar of Group and Premier races at Galway, Naas, Leopardstown, Cork, and the Curragh, including standout events like the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes and the Irish St. Leger Trial. But all eyes will soon turn back to England when the stage is set for one of the most prestigious meetings of the summer - York's historic Ebor Festival, which kicks off on August 20. The five-day meeting features headline races like the Juddmonte International (G1), Yorkshire Oaks (G1), Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) and the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes (G2).
