Double-decker trains could soon run from London to Paris

Yahoo14-05-2025

Double-decker trains could run through the Channel Tunnel by the end of the decade under plans being drawn up by Eurostar and Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group.
The rival rail operators are contemplating orders of a two-tier version of the French TGV train, in a move that would significantly increase capacity on the busy London-Paris route.
It would also give Britons a taste of the double-decker train travel that has been commonplace in continental Europe for decades.
Eurostar said that opting for a double-decker design is 'a possibility' as it moves towards placing an order for up to 50 new trains by the end of this year.
Talks are under way with multiple manufacturers for the order, a spokesman said. Those include Alstom, the manufacturer of the original fleet of TGV-based Eurostar trains that are capable of speeds of 350 km/h (217 mph).
Eurostar's majority owner, French state railway SNCF, has operated twin-deck TGVs since 1996.
Sir Richard's Virgin Group also said it would consider double-deckers as it bids to operate trains through the Channel Tunnel in competition with Eurostar.
A spokesman said potential suppliers included Alstom as it seeks 'the best trains to meet our cross-Channel rail ambitions'.
Opting for a high-capacity model might enhance Virgin's credentials amid efforts to win approval for the move from UK regulators.
Gemini Trains, led by rail industry expert Lord Tony Berkeley, and Evolyn of Spain, which is working with Italy's state rail operator, are also in the running to end Eurostar's 30-year monopoly on cross-Channel services
Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Alstom's boss, said it was in talks to run double-decker trains through the Channel Tunnel, where he said they could both increase capacity and bring down fares. He told the Financial Times: 'The double-decker train has a lot of advantages. It's a very high-speed train with the lowest cost per seat and the highest capacity.'The High Speed 1 line from Folkestone to St Pancras station was built to European standards, meaning there should be no issue in accommodating the increased height of the trains, an Alstom spokesman said.
While gaining approval for double-deckers to run through the tunnel would take some years, they should be available within the timescales being explored by Eurostar and Virgin.
However, Alstom has limited production capacity and outstanding orders for the two-tier TGV, so it may be a case of 'first come, first served' in bringing the trains to the Tunnel, he said.
The firm's newest twin-deck model, the Avelia Horizon, which has more than 100 orders, is set for its first delivery next year.
While the top level of a double-decker offers a better view for passengers, the trains have a mixed reputation in Europe.
Stairs to the top level can be hard to negotiate for some passengers and boarding times are inevitably longer. A seat on the bottom deck also tends to be lower and can require steps down.
Britain's only foray into double-decker trains came after Second World War, when two experimental commuter models served London Charing Cross.

Ohio State Athletics launches Center for Sports Intelligence and Strategy

Ohio State Athletics launches Center for Sports Intelligence and Strategy On the heels of the House Settlement being approved, which paves the way for direct revenue sharing with college athletes, the Ohio State Department of Athletics announced the creation of the Center for Sports Intelligence & Strategy. It's not a physical building, mind you, but according to a release from the department, it is the bringing together of a cross-functional team of athletics department administrators dedicated to driving strategic planning, optimizing data-driven decision-making, and fostering collaboration across teams. It is designed to provide Ohio State coaches with access to cutting-edge analytics, strategic insights, and tools designed to inform and enhance key areas such as recruiting, scheduling, resource allocation, and roster construction. In other words, it's designed to beat every other college and university athletic department when it comes to the new order of revenue sharing and NIL in amateur college sports. 'The Center for Sports Intelligence & Strategy will equip our coaches with more information, context, and clarity to make even better decisions,' said Shaun Richard, Deputy Athletics Director, in a statement. 'We already have the best sports science team that equips our coaches with data on training, recovery, and performance. This unit will work in tandem with our sports scientists, as well as our business and NIL strategy teams, to give coaches additional data and actionable insights.' There's no other way to explain this than groundbreaking. In a sense, Ohio State is looking to bring together sports sciences, operations, and athletic performance together to provide a better outcome for the student-athlete and success on the field. 'The intelligence and strategy we're providing will enhance our coaches' ability to make critical decisions by giving them the most relevant and timely information available – so they can maintain a competitive edge in every aspect of their programs,' said Richard. This type of integration and cooperation is being embraced by Ohio State coaches across multiple sports. 'As coaches at Ohio State, we know the difference between winning and losing often comes down to the smallest details,' wrestling coach Tom Ryan said in the statement. 'The Center for Sports Intelligence & Strategy will uncover subtle patterns and insights that will give our teams a competitive edge. As the world of college athletics evolves, we know the additional intelligence and strategy will help us stay at the forefront in this highly competitive environment.' Many areas will be impacted by the creation of the Center for Sports Intelligence and Strategy. It will be designed to integrate data and strategic expertise to support long-term planning and real-time decision-making. Areas of impact include recruiting and roster management, scheduling strategy, scholarship and budget modeling, and other operational aspects. 'The Center for Sports Intelligence & Strategy reinforces Ohio State's commitment to innovation, excellence, and leadership in the future of college athletics,' said Ross Bjork, Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletics Director. 'As the competitive landscape continues to evolve, the intelligence and strategy provided will serve as an additional resource to ensure sustained success across all 36 sports.' This is just the beginning of this initiative, and it'll be interesting to see how it all is employed and how it evolves. It'll be even more interesting to see if success on and off the field reach new heights with the collaborative approach. 'Overnight success that has taken 30 years': Wonderful's Resnick jokes with audience at Shafter ribbon-cutting

His success in business is evident across the southern Central Valley, in sprawling ag fields and in a large distribution hub in Shafter. But it's not often Stewart Resnick is seen at large events in Kern County. Late Thursday morning, though, the co-owner of Los Angeles-based The Wonderful Co. walked up, stood before an audience of more than 200 people just north of 7th Standard Road and took a moment to adjust the microphone downward. Then he opened with a joke. Resnick, diminutive in a blue button-down, long-sleeve shirt and jeans, said normally when he comes to such events people look around and say, "You're Stewart Resnick?" "I say, 'I used to be 6 foot 4. My competition came and beat me into the ground,'" he said. He's humble, folks. Even when surrounded by dignitaries celebrating another one of his company's large investments in the local economy. Resnick had come to join them to mark the opening of Wonderful's new Amenities Center, a gleaming new complex with a tech training center, office building and subsidized restaurant with an urgent care center still to come. The center serves as the welcoming heart of the Wonderful Logistics Center, which the company proposes to almost double in the years to come. If the City Council approves, the company hopes also to build thousands of new homes for workers and their families. Resnick called the already large development "one of our most ambitious projects," a state-of-the-art facility populated by Fortune 500 companies on land where three decades ago there were only orchards. "This is an overnight success that has taken 30 years," he quipped after thanking those in attendance for sharing the day. "Now let's go show the world what Shafter and the Central Valley can do!" he said in closing. Wonderful has already had a big impact on farming communities in the valley portion of Kern County, especially in Lost Hills and Delano, where in addition to being a major employer, the company has opened charter academies, wellness centers and more. Shafter is the next big focus. If Wonderful moves forward with an expansion of the distribution-center hub, the logistics center's employment base is expected to expand over time from about 13,000 to 50,000. Housing units the company proposes to build would expand Shafter's population by about 40%. The Amenities Center is sort of a precursor to those developments. Its training center works in partnership with Amazon and Bakersfield College to introduce job-seekers to tech-oriented warehouse jobs. The office building boasts numerous art pieces, and the restaurant serves healthy meals at relatively low prices. Thursday's gathering drew representatives of many of Kern's most prominent business, government and educational organizations, many of whom accepted offers to tour the new buildings. Resnick's humility was matched by that of invited speaker Supervisor David Couch, who said he was coming from a local government perspective when he told the audience, "We can't do anything, and I mean anything, until you all make something, provide a service." "The revenue that local government gets comes because you all come to work every day," Couch said. "It all starts because somebody … took the risk to invest their money in this community." Shafter Mayor Chad Givens was up next. He said the city prides itself on how business operates in Shafter and how it is able to move in operators as fast as possible. "We're a very business friendly city and we're thankful for that," he said before expressing gratitude to Wonderful for its work in the city. Former City Manager John Guinn, now Wonderful Real Estate's executive vice president and chief operating officer, told the crowd Resnick and his wife, Lynda Resnick, have shown their commitment to the families of the Central Valley. In his experience, they want nothing more than for the region to become a strong, vibrant place to live. "Everything they talk about, they actually do," he said. "That's uncommon."
