Aimee Semple McPherson and the gospel of reinvention in L.A.
Los Angeles has always been a city that prefers reinvention to tradition, making it the ideal incubator for new religious movements. From the beginning, its distance from the centers of institutional power made it a place where identity could be fluid, beliefs unusual and performance, a currency. Self-transformation was, for many, the ultimate goal.
'It is a young city, crude, wildly ambitious, growing,' wrote the critic Louis Adamic in the 1930s, with scathing insight. 'It has halitosis and osmidrosis; and to kill the stench it gargles religious soul-wash and rubs holy toilet-water and scented talc between its toes.'
Scholars of religion have marveled at the city's ability to create myriad new belief systems — from the Pentecostal revivals on Azusa Street in the early 1900s, to the Church of Scientology in the 1950s, to the wellness gospel of the 2000s and beyond. L.A. doesn't just reflect spiritual trends — it manufactures them and exports them to the rest of the world.
Among L.A.'s self-realized religious innovators, Aimee Semple McPherson stands out. She is arguably our city's founding godmother of reinvention. When she arrived in Los Angeles on Dec. 21, 1918, she was looking to channel her connection to the divine into what today we might call a platform. The 'lady preacher' drove into town with only, as she would say time and again, '10 dollars and a tambourine.' In the backseat were her two young children, and riding shotgun was her mother, Minnie.
McPherson had spent the last few years living hand to mouth, holding tent revivals across America centered on her Pentecostal gospel, and building a following of believers who saw the 28-year-old woman as touched by heavenly gifts. As she followed the voice of God, her mother served as the ballast to her spirit-filled wanderings, procuring money and supplies, mapping the road ahead and building a substantial subscriber base for their fledgling magazine, 'The Bridal Call.' The two drove across the country's new highways without a man to accompany them, a fact that would only add to McPherson's mythology as a godly swashbuckling adventurer. As they cruised past orange groves and oil wells, Aimee was filled with dreams for the future — of sunshine, of easy living and of the multitudes who might come to see her preach. She would later write, 'I had the feeling that here I would meet my destiny.'
Los Angeles in the 1920s was the perfect place for McPherson to build a following, fertile ground for radical ideas about how to connect God and self. It was not only one of the fastest-growing cities in the world but one of the fastest-growing cities in the history of the world. Unlike other American municipalities, L.A., it seemed, had erected itself through pure desire, a barren basin that stole enough water to reimagine itself as a paradise, whose city fathers marketed its sunny weather when they had little else to sell, cultivating its image as a healthy utopia, an alternative to grim, polluted industrialized East Coast cities. In the span of a few decades, it morphed from a violent outpost to one of the wealthiest places on the planet. To borrow a perfect analogy from historian Kevin Starr, Los Angeles was 'the Great Gatsby of American cities.'
It would take McPherson just a few years to reach the heights of power in L.A. In 1923, she founded what is arguably America's first megachurch, the Angelus Temple, which still welcomes believers on Glendale Boulevard, across from Echo Park Lake. Next, she started one of the first Christian radio stations, in 1924. At Angelus Temple, where the main auditorium seated more than 5,000, multiple services and other programming went on all day, every day, and her dazzling approach of combining theatrical spectacle with the gospel made her the precursor of the 20th century's televangelists, a pioneer of Christian entertainment.
McPherson presented salvation through her legendary 'illustrated sermons.' She rented costumes and scenery from nearby Hollywood studios and drew on popular culture and everyday events. She depicted life in Los Angeles as biblically prophesied and infused with meaning. Her critics called her the P.T. Barnum of Christianity. The temple had a 14-piece orchestra, a brass band and a hundred-voice choir, two-thirds female, all dressed in white. She used live camels, tigers, lambs, palm trees — whatever it took to bring biblical truth to life on her stage. The whole point was to dazzle and overwhelm. Aimee's sermons were soon considered the best show in town. She was one of the first in the modern era to understand that faith, fame and spectacle were not contradictions, but a heady brew for success.
But despite her incredible ambition and achievements, McPherson became enshrouded in scandal. At the height of her fame, in 1926, she walked into the ocean at Venice Beach and vanished. Tens of thousands gathered on the sand to pray for her, two people died in the search effort, and the city's headlines chronicled the tragedy like a soap opera. But 36 days later, Aimee wandered in from the deserts of Mexico to a backyard in Arizona telling an unbelievable story of being kidnapped.
She returned to Los Angeles, where she was soon prosecuted for making the whole thing up — along with her mother, an alleged lover and a schizophrenic look-alike female grifter who had been sleeping at Aimee's parsonage. That fall, a judge listened to evidence on every aspect of McPherson's life — from her business practices to her romantic life to the size of her ankles. The case was ultimately dropped, the mystery never solved, but through it all, McPherson kept preaching and growing her audience.
McPherson's life, gospel and showmanship burnished a sales pitch that remains at the center of L.A.'s allure. Even as the city navigates its recovery from devastating natural disasters, it is still a place where people arrive with hopes of revival, of materializing their dreams, of second chances and spiritual, physical, material and mental transformation. Now as then, seekers are manifesting their dreams: There's a better you available in the City of Angels.

Scholarship celebration honors Black college-bound seniors
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Hundreds gathered at a Bloomington church on Saturday to celebrate Black excellence in the classroom. The ceremony was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. It was sponsored by the Mentoring and Providing Scholarships Program, a local non-profit that mentors black students to learn etiquette, financial literacy and public speaking skills. More than $80,000 in scholarships were awarded to Black college-bound seniors for their academic achievements and community service. 'The annual Joint Scholarship Celebration plays an integral role in celebrating the successes of African American students,' Carla Campbell-Jackson, co-founder of MAPS, said. 'The MAPS Program is invaluable for students, and for our community, as we are developing 'real time' leaders and thought partners, who will continue to make a difference locally, and beyond.' Money for the scholarships was gathered with the help of African-American sororities, fraternities, and community-based organizations. MAPS looks to help students prepare for the professional world with important skills such as public speaking, said Shaun Harden, one of the students who received several scholarships. 'MAPS has been really great, especially for professional development. For instance, one of our previous sessions was about public speaking,' Harden said. 'We talked about how we were able to approach the stand and how we were able to address the audience properly, how to avoid filler words, a lot of different proper speaking things that you don't really get to learn other than through experience.' Local philanthropists also contributed to the scholarship fund, which helped raise more money for African American students looking to pursue higher education. Keynote speakers for the event included NAACP Image Award Winner and WMBD Summer Intern Bradley Ross Jackson and Teresa Haley, who shared some information and advice with the students. 'I learned that if you work hard, if you stay strong and determined, and continue to try to do your best and give back to the communities that have supported you, that you will eventually be rewarded in the end,' said Gabrielle Johnson, the president of the Bloomington-Normal NAACP Youth Council. Burial service to be held June 9 for Gravette WWII soldier killed in D-Day invasion
GRAVETTE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — After more than 80 years, a Northwest Arkansan hero is returning home. Private Rodger Dean Andrews, a World War II soldier from Gravette, will be laid to rest with full military honors at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 9, at Bethel Cemetery in Gravette, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office (BSCO). His remains, recently identified after decades of uncertainty, will arrive in Northwest Arkansas the evening of Sunday, June 8 and be received by Epting Funeral Home in Bentonville. On Monday, the BCSO Motor Division will escort Private Andrews to his final resting place, joined by Military Honors and the Patriot Guard. The procession will depart Epting Funeral Home (709 N. Walton Blvd, Bentonville) at 1:15 p.m. and follow this route: South on N. Walton Blvd Right on SW 14th Street (Highway 102) Right on Highway 59 through Decatur Right on Bethel Road in Gravette Left into Bethel Cemetery 'Community members are encouraged to line the route and pay their respects to honor the life and service of Private Rodger Dean Andrews, a true American hero,' BSCO said in a Facebook post. HISTORY: Grant Hardin's 12-day escape joins the state's most infamous escapes The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced in a news release on October 2 that U.S. Army Private Rodger D. Andrews, 19, was accounted for on June 5. Andrews was assigned in June 1944 to Company C of the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater. On June 6, 1944, American, Canadian and British forces came ashore on the beaches of Normandy in France during Operation Overlord. The release said that at some point during the battle, Andrews was killed, but due to the chaos, it is not known what happened to him. Private Rodger Dean Andrews' remains were recovered after D-Day but went unidentified for decades. In 2014, his family requested renewed efforts. A belt with his initials helped prompt a review, and in 2019, the remains were exhumed. Scientists confirmed his identity through dental and anthropological analysis. A rosette will now mark his name at the Normandy American Cemetery. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during her remarks at the 2025 Memorial Day Observance at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock that U.S. Army Private Rodger D. ‘Keep Beaufort Beaufort' is a reminder and a rallying cry for us all
'Keep Beaufort Beaufort.' What beautiful marching orders from Cynthia Jenkins, who stepped down this month as the director of the Historic Beaufort Foundation after a-14 year tenure there. You'd think this is a group that looks back in time, sometimes to an aggravating degree, and it does. But since 1947, it has looked forward by doing its best to keep Beaufort Beaufort. I hope the foundation is the first one to capitalize on the 'Keep Beaufort Beaufort' T-shirts, if they haven't done so already. But really, that is the cry of our times all over the South Carolina Lowcountry — 'Save us, dear God, from ourselves.' And we're not the only ones in the fight. The most famous municipal rallying cry is probably 'Keep Austin Weird' in Texas, but it's easy to imagine a lot of T-shirt wishes closer to home. Keep Bluffton Eccentric. Keep St. Helena Gullah. Keep Hilton Head Over There. Keep Columbia Hot. Keep Myrtle Beach Kitschy. Keep Charleston From Sinking. A real one today is 'Keep Chelsea Rural,' a grassroots reaction to the kudzu vine of growth that is now reaching beyond Bluffton and Hardeeville to overtake Highway 462 in rural Jasper County. A similar new plea is 'Save the Euhaw.' As Hilton Head Island has grown from a few thousand residents to around 40,000 while luring 3.5 million visitors a year, some people even marched in the streets trying to 'save' things. We've had: Save Our Trees. Save the Sea Pines Deer. Save the Forest Beach Chickens. Save the Tiki Hut. Have all these people over all this time been asking too much? Cynthia Jenkins was in the best position to know what it means, and understand what it will take, to keep Beaufort Beaufort. All of these grassroots wishes implore us to know who we are. What is our soul? And why would we sell it to the devil? What is our birthright? And why would we sell it for a bowl of lentil stew? 'Keeping' and 'saving' our soul implores us to know who it is that is defining who or what we are. Is it the travel brochure or the poet? The Big Mac or the shrimp burger? Trader Joe's or Harold's Country Club? Beaufort can tell her own story, if we'll but have the sense to listen. It is older than the United States of America itself, and has somehow rolled with the tides and the times under six different flags. It serves today a feast of flavor brought by the Africans, Huguenots, Spanish, English, Scots, and, yes, plenty of damn Yankees. Best-selling author Pat Conroy, who was adopted by the people of Beaufort when he was just a sniveling Marine Corps dependent, came as close as anyone to capturing the allure of Beaufort in mere words. In 'The Prince of Tides,' Conroy wrote, 'To describe our growing up in the low country of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open you an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.'' Countless others have savored it over 400 years. We can thank Cynthia Jenkins for her years of attention to every detail of her unique home town.
