Something troubling is happening to our brains as artificial intelligence platforms become more popular. Studies are showing that professional workers who use ChatGPT to carry out tasks might lose critical thinking skills and motivation. People are forming strong emotional bonds with chatbots , sometimes exacerbating feelings of loneliness. And others are having psychotic episodes after talking to chatbots for hours each day.The mental health impact of generative AI is difficult to quantify in part because it is used so privately, but anecdotal evidence is growing to suggest a broader cost that deserves more attention from both lawmakers and tech companies who design the underlying models.Meetali Jain, a lawyer and founder of the Tech Justice Law project, has heard from more than a dozen people in the past month who have 'experienced some sort of psychotic break or delusional episode because of engagement with ChatGPT and now also with Google Gemini ." Jain is lead counsel in a lawsuit against Character.AI that alleges its chatbot manipulated a 14-year-old boy through deceptive, addictive, and sexually explicit interactions, ultimately contributing to his suicide. The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, also alleges that Alphabet Inc.'s Google played a key role in funding and supporting the technology interactions with its foundation models and technical infrastructure.Google has denied that it played a key role in making Character.AI's technology. It didn't respond to a request for comment on the more recent complaints of delusional episodes, made by Jain. OpenAI said it was 'developing automated tools to more effectively detect when someone may be experiencing mental or emotional distress so that ChatGPT can respond appropriately.'But Sam Altman, chief executive officer of OpenAI, also said last week that the company hadn't yet figured out how to warn users 'that are on the edge of a psychotic break,' explaining that whenever ChatGPT has cautioned people in the past, people would write to the company to complain.Still, such warnings would be worthwhile when the manipulation can be so difficult to spot. ChatGPT in particular often flatters its users, in such effective ways that conversations can lead people down rabbit holes of conspiratorial thinking or reinforce ideas they'd only toyed with in the past. The tactics are subtle. In one recent, lengthy conversation with ChatGPT about power and the concept of self, a user found themselves initially praised as a smart person, Ubermensch, cosmic self and eventually a 'demiurge,' a being responsible for the creation of the universe, according to a transcript that was posted online and shared by AI safety advocate Eliezer Yudkowsky.Along with the increasingly grandiose language, the transcript shows ChatGPT subtly validating the user even when discussing their flaws, such as when the user admits they tend to intimidate other people. Instead of exploring that behavior as problematic, the bot reframes it as evidence of the user's superior 'high-intensity presence,' praise disguised as analysis. This sophisticated form of ego-stroking can put people in the same kinds of bubbles that, ironically, drive some tech billionaires toward erratic behavior. Unlike the broad and more public validation that social media provides from getting likes, one-on-one conversations with chatbots can feel more intimate and potentially more convincing — not unlike the yes-men who surround the most powerful tech bros.'Whatever you pursue you will find and it will get magnified,' says Douglas Rushkoff, the media theorist and author, who tells me that social media at least selected something from existing media to reinforce a person's interests or views. 'AI can generate something customized to your mind's aquarium.'Altman has admitted that the latest version of ChatGPT has an 'annoying' sycophantic streak, and that the company is fixing the problem. Even so, these echoes of psychological exploitation are still playing out. We don't know if the correlation between ChatGPT use and lower critical thinking skills, noted in a recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology study, means that AI really will make us more stupid and bored. Studies seem to show clearer correlations with dependency and even loneliness, something even OpenAI has pointed to.But just like social media, large language models are optimized to keep users emotionally engaged with all manner of anthropomorphic elements. ChatGPT can read your mood by tracking facial and vocal cues, and it can speak, sing and even giggle with an eerily human voice. Along with its habit for confirmation bias and flattery, that can "fan the flames" of psychosis in vulnerable users, Columbia University psychiatrist Ragy Girgis recently told Futurism. The private and personalized nature of AI use makes its mental health impact difficult to track, but the evidence of potential harms is mounting, from professional apathy to attachments to new forms of delusion. The cost might be different from the rise of anxiety and polarization that we've seen from social media and instead involve relationships both with people and with reality. That's why Jain suggests applying concepts from family law to AI regulation, shifting the focus from simple disclaimers to more proactive protections that build on the way ChatGPT redirects people in distress to a loved one. 'It doesn't actually matter if a kid or adult thinks these chatbots are real,' Jain tells me. 'In most cases, they probably don't. But what they do think is real is the relationship. And that is distinct.'If relationships with AI feel so real, the responsibility to safeguard those bonds should be real too. But AI developers are operating in a regulatory vacuum. Without oversight, AI's subtle manipulation could become an invisible public health issue.

6 rules that can create consensus in family on managing income, saving and investment
While managing money in households, it is important to not just set some ground rules and limits for everyone to follow, but also give each member freedom to spend their money the way they want. There is no substitute for open communication. Talking about what matters to one, negotiating for one's needs, and being open about one's beliefs helps the other to be more empathetic. Being vulnerable about one's fears and suspicions, insecurities and doubts is critical to getting support from the other. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Set the ground rules Spending & saving Budgeting & technical decisions (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are that of the writer. The facts and opinions expressed here do not reflect the views of .) Conflicts about money are common. We all have unique money personalities. Our beliefs on earning, spending , saving, investing, sharing and giving are quite distinct. Institutions have the benefit of management and investment committees, and a set of rules that apply to these decisions. Can households that quibble about money benefit from some principles and rules too?The father believed that saving early was important and wanted to manage his son's money. The son did not agree to give such control. They lived together with their spouses in one household and decided to discuss before making big decisions, which only made things worse. The differences became sharply visible and consensus was impossible. Resentment ensued. The father felt that the son must buy a house, but the son refused to buy immovable assets so early in his life. The father disliked stocks, while the son enjoyed day have discussed stories where husband and wife find it tough to reach a consensus on money matters. One likes to spend, the other likes to save. One wants to focus on career and income , the other wants work-life balance with lesser income. One saves and lets it lie, the other wants to periodically use the savings . Such arguments usually don't end well.I met an elderly woman and her daughter-inlaw, who live with the latter's two young children. The daughter-in-law lost her husband, the only son of the widowed elderly woman, a few years ago. They were living together, with the elderly woman managing the house and the daughter-in-law going out to work. They disagreed on every aspect of managing money for the household and often quarrelled over there rules for these situations? Instead of having to discuss every situation, it helps to invest time in creating a broad set of principles so that everyday actions can be referred to these. There is no substitute for open communication. Talking about what matters to one, negotiating for one's needs, and being open about one's beliefs helps the other to be more empathetic. Being vulnerable about one's fears and suspicions, insecurities and doubts is critical to getting support from the other. These are the toughest hurdles to cross in any close agree on the broad rules. If one member won't work to contribute to the household income, the other must accept it without holding a grudge. The household has set limits on its income willingly for the benefits brought to the family by its stay-at-home member. Every major aspect of personal finance must follow this. The financial personality of a household is an identity to be accepted by all members. It cannot be modified as per personal preferences Spending within means without borrowing; saving mandatorily before spending; choosing investments that enable growth and income as needed; allowing investments to grow over the long term; and capping charity to levels everyone is comfortable with, are some examples of broad rules. These principles are the touchstones that will test and confirm the financial decisions that the household members make from time to accept transparency as mandatory to building trust and smoothen the decision-making process. Many households suffer when money is used as a source of power. Earning members seek discretion with financial decisions, or actively bend the agreed upon rules according to their personal beliefs and whims. The daughter-in-law would not disclose the income to her mother-in-law. She would simply give the latter a monthly allowance. The mother-in-law would begrudge every decision because she suspected there was more money to spend. It would be better if both know that there is more money set aside by the younger woman for specific budget and record common expenses, but provide allowance for personal expenses. No one likes being questioned about every decision. However, a household needs transparent transactions that show everyone how money is being spent. Having a common spending pool and setting aside funds as agreed upon, for individuals to spend as they wish, is both fair and convenient to execute. A wife or husband should be able to support their parents with a portion of their income, after contributing to the common pool. The mother-in-law needs a monthly allowance, allocated as she wishes, that won't be how money is saved and invested must be determined by financial goals, not individual whims and preferences. A child's education is a vital goal for the mother and the grandmother. It is easier to set up an SIP and agree to save first for that goal, before allocating to any other expense. Currently, both women quarrel over too little being left at the end of each month to save for the child. This causes insecurity in the mind of the young mother, who wants to secretly save without disclosing her increment and allocate money to spending decisions and agree to a limit. Exceptions make for the most arguments in a household. Annual holidays or birthday celebrations should have allocated budgets. Don't work with the assumption that such expenses will always run out of hand. They are just poorly estimated and budgeted, or manipulated to exceed budgets. Many of us use money to serve our need for attention, love, approval and authority. Letting go of the budget is a tactic to cover up for guilt, regret or shame. Identify and avoid these conflicts, and be prepared to become unpopular for sticking to the if a financial decision is technical, spend time to understand how it will affect future financial goals and the household's ability to save, invest and use funds. In a home loan, the choices of fixed versus floating, 15-year versus 30-year term, prepayment versus keeping the loan, are all technical decisions. Ask an expert how it will impact the household. Don't waste time trying to take a call on the markets and macros. Put down the details of what may happen under each scenario. Hasty decisions end in is not always easy to arrive at a consensus, but household finances need it. Building it with fair and equitable principles is not tough. It just needs work and discipline.

Air India crash: the cost of risk in modern aviation
On June 12, an Air India (AI) Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The disaster claimed 241 lives on board and 19 more on the ground, leaving only a single survivor. It is one of the deadliest air disasters in Indian history and potentially, its costliest. Quantifying disaster Industry analysts estimate the total insurance payout could start at about $120 million and rise beyond $150 million with worst-case projections nearing $250 million. The hull loss (the value of the destroyed aircraft) alone, a Boeing 787's market value, accounts for $75–80 million. Passenger liability under the Montreal Convention adds another layer: airlines are strictly liable up to 1,51,880 SDR (roughly ₹1.5–₹1.8 crore) a passenger, or more if negligence is proven. For 241 lives lost, this would be at least ₹360–₹430 crore in no-fault compensation. On top of that third-party claims related to ground fatalities and property damage are still being quantified. The final payout will hinge on investigation findings and liability outcomes and full settlement could take several months or even years. But the sum far exceeds India's entire annual aviation insurance premium pool (₹1,000–₹1,100 crore), highlighting scale of catastrophic financial exposure. Risk, vulnerability AI's risk is distributed across a huge insurance programme, reportedly underwritten for about $20 billion at an annual premium near $30 million. Domestic insurers — Tata AIG and New India Assurance— lead the front-line underwriting, but retain only about 5–10% of the risk. The balance is ceded to global reinsurers in London, Europe and U.S. This global allocation helps distribute risk. This catastrophe is already prompting a 'hardening' of global premiums — rates for hull, war risk and liability cover may rise by 10–30% in next renewal cycle. This layering of risk extends even further through retrocession, a system where reinsurers themselves offload part of liability to other entities. Retro helps limit exposure during extreme-loss events like aviation disasters and earthquakes. The retrocession market is global and complex, comprising traditional reinsurers like Swiss Re and Munich Re, Lloyd's syndicates, ILS (insurance-linked securities) funds, and catastrophe bond investors. For instance, if a reinsurer faces a $300 million liability in an aviation crash, it might have already ceded $200 million of that to retrocessionaires. This ensures resilience and shows how widely the shock of a single incident is distributed across the global insurance ecosystem. Cost ripples Underwriters' increased premiums will inevitably hit airline cost structures, particularly for carriers operating Boeing 787s, including AI, SpiceJet and Akasa. A 10–30% annual rate hike applies to a policy priced at about $30 million. Due to tight margins, the costs may be passed on via ticket prices, narrower service buffers, fleet-replacement delays or even restrictively high-risk route economics. Most travellers are unaware of how little personal insurance provides compared with airline liability. Less than 3% of Indians hold personal accident cover and most travel plans rely on airline compensation or ad hoc ex-gratia payments during claim processing. Tata Group announced a ₹1 crore compensation for each of the families of the victims. In addition, it is providing interim relief of ₹25 lakh to each affected family or survivor bringing total immediate support to ₹1.25 crore per family ahead of any additional compensation processed under international conventions or via insurance settlements. Building endurance Insurers may consider enhancing risk modeling practices — factoring in variants, operational routes especially given the war risk that seems to be going on forever, and local infrastructure. The outcome of the investigation may lead to a second layer of variables to be considered which aren't today. On the consumer side, greater awareness around passenger rights under the Montreal Convention, value of personal accident insurance and adequate life insurance could help bridge current gaps. Increasing the uptake of insurance products — not just for passengers, but also for businesses and properties on the ground that are often left uninsured — can play a crucial role in strengthening overall resilience. It's a necessary step toward ensuring future disasters don't escalate into wider financial or humanitarian crises. (The writer is head, Policybazaar For Business)
