Beyond sight: How blind photographers are redefining visual art in India

For most, photography is about capturing what the eye can see. But for Vivek Yeralkar, who gradually lost his vision, it has become a way to experience the world on his own terms through sound, memory, and technology.
Yeralkar is among a growing number of visually impaired photographers in India exploring photography not as a visual medium, but as a sensory and conceptual one. Helping lead this shift is Partho Bhowmick, a Mumbai-based photographer and educator who founded the Blind With Camera initiative in 2006.
His workshops encourage visually impaired individuals to use other senses, touch, sound, and spatial awareness to understand and frame their surroundings.
'Blind With Camera works to help visually impaired people become part of society and culture. It teaches them art that doesn't rely on vision, giving them pride, purpose, and hope in their new way of 'seeing.' It also helps give them a voice and brings people together, making society more understanding and accepting.' Bhowmick says.
Since its inception, 'Blind With Camera' has trained over 1,800 people across India and abroad. It has also launched an open-source e-learning platform for blind photographers, developed with IIT Bombay, and curated multi-sensory exhibitions that invite both sighted and non-sighted audiences to experience photography in new ways.
Advancements in technology have made this art form more accessible. Apps like Microsoft's Seeing AI describe scenes aloud; vOICe converts visuals into soundscapes; and others like Tech-Freedom integrate scene reading, object recognition, and currency detection, features that allow visually impaired users to explore their surroundings independently.
In blind schools across India, students are now being introduced to these tools not only for daily navigation, but as part of creative expression.
For some, photography has led to professional opportunities. Bhavesh Patel, who has been blind since early childhood, made headlines in 2014 for shooting a commercial campaign for Lux featuring actress Katrina Kaif. He used sound cues like the rustle of fabric to frame his subject.
Patel now uses his phone camera for daily tasks, such as taking a picture of his shirt and effectively colour coordinating his entire ensemble.
Yeralkar, too, has found purpose beyond the lens. A silver medalist at the West Zone Abilympics, he says photography helped him rebuild confidence. 'I needed physical help to get around. But after rediscovering photography, I felt renewed purpose and could navigate independently again,' he said.

TN to offer subsidies, grant & infrastructure for chip design firms

CHENNAI: The govt has decided to provide subsidies and grants to fabless design firms and set up common testing facilities, under the state's semiconductor Mission 2030, to become competitive in the chip value chain. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state plans to provide financial incentives to 'Tamil Nadu-based entities' engaged in semiconductor design for integrated circuits (ICs), chipsets, system on chips (SoCs), as per a govt order. It also plans to provide incentives such as payroll subsidy (with a ceiling of Rs5 crore per firm), 50% subsidy (not exceeding Rs 20 crore) for design software and intellectual property sourcing, prototyping, testing, certification and others . This could complement the Union govt's design-linked incentives for chips and Tamil Nadu's broader efforts to build a semiconductor ecosystem. According to a release from the office of state industries minister T R B Rajaa on Monday, the Tamil Nadu govt is also establishing a centre of excellence to provide infrastructure for chip design, testing and validation. The CoE will be set up as a special purpose vehicle, promoted by TIDCO with a private sector or academic partner and is expected to provide project grants and land free of cost. The state's semiconductor design promotion scheme has a budgetary outlay of Rs 250 crore, testing infrastructure component has a Rs 75 crore outlay, out of Rs 500 crore chip mission announced in the state budget. It is understood that the govt may increase the allocation after the initial stages of implementation. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu plans to roll out a workforce development programme to train 1,000 engineering students from the state on platforms such as India Semiconductor Workforce Development Programme (ISWDP), a partnership among IISc, Synopsys and Samsung Semiconductor India Research. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As part of this, the govt will sponsor candidates to reputable training facilities outside the country, the release said. Rajaa said targeted subsidies and prototyping grants will provide fabless design firms the critical early stage support. 'The centres of excellence will anchor research, industry and academia collaboration. By supporting design-led innovation and enabling home-grown IP, we are laying the foundation for Tamil Nadu to become a global hub for tech products and solutions,' he said. 'By combining subsidies for design firms, investments in infrastructure and parks, enabling a pilot fabrication facility and a skilling programme, we are creating a self-sustaining semiconductor value chain, ' said V , state industries secretary. Recently, the govt announced the setting up of a small-scale production-grade fab in partnership with IIT-M, to train 4,500 technicians across fabrication, testing and packaging. The govt is also progressing with chip equipment manufacturing parks in Sulur and near Palladam, both spanning 100 acres of land.

Nikhil Kamath invests ₹137 crore in THIS company, bets on clean energy

Nikhil Kamath, online trading platform Zerodha's co-founder and a prolific investor, has this time bet on India's solar manufacturing space with a ₹ 137 crore investment in photovoltaic (PV) module company Goldi Solar for an unspecified stake, according to a PTI report. In an official statement on the infusion, Gujarat-based Goldi Solar said that it will use the funding for expansion activities, the report added. On his part, Nikhil Kamath in a statement said that this investment comes as he sees 'massive opportunity' in India's renewable sector. 'Renewable energy in India is a massive sector, and there is an equally massive opportunity to build global-scale companies right here on our home ground,' he stated. In the last year (2024), Goldi Solar has increased its solar PV module manufacturing capacity from 3 gigawatts (GW) to 14.7 GW. The company in its statement said it is also developing its solar cell manufacturing expansions in Surat, Gujarat. Incorporated in 2011, Goldi Solar added that it 'will continue to introduce high-efficiency solar PV modules and cells incorporating emerging technologies to meet the country's growing clean energy needs', the report added. As per the PTI report, Nikhil Kamath's investment in Goldi Solar comes at the time that competitor Vikram Solar has begun the processes for its ₹ 2,000 crore initial public offering (IPO). The moves comes amid rapid growth in domestic solar demand. The Indian government is targeting 280 GW of solar power by 2030, and has also policy interventions on the import duties on foreign modules, and incentives for local manufacturers under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. All this has reportedly spurred actions and development in the sector. According to a Storyboard18 report, Nikhil Kamath has invested across sectors in startups such as NourishYou, LehLah, InCred Holdings, PeeSafe and Subko Coffee Roasters, among others.
