Horse racing legend and ‘true gentleman' Peter Easterby dies aged 95

LEGENDARY horse racing trainer Peter Easterby has sadly died aged 95.
He won five Champion Hurdles and two Cheltenham Gold Cups during his glittering career.

His son Tim confirmed the devastating news in a touching statement.
It read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.
"He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.
"A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather."
Tributes have flooded in, racing pundit Jim McGrath wrote: "A one off, brilliant trainer, great company, down to earth, yet fun and straightforward to deal with.
"Loved life and people. Condolences to all the family and his many friends. RIP."
Fans added: "Heartfelt condolences to you and your family Tim. One of the greatest racehorse trainers in history. A legacy that will never be forgotten."
Another said: "What a man and what a dynasty he founded. So sorry to hear of the passing of Peter Easterby - a very fine Yorkshireman indeed."
The three-time Champion Trainer started with seven horses at his Habton Grange stable in the 1950s.
He went on to become one of the most decorated in the sport and he is the only to have ever recorded over 1,000 winners in Britain in both flat and National Hunt racing.
Back-to-back Champion Hurdle winners Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon were trained by Easterby in the 70s and 80s.
Saucy Kit, Alverton and Little Owl were other horses that rode to glory for him.
His son Tim succeeded him as a trainer when he retired in 1996.

Boulter and Raducanu broke back and eventually claimed the opening set, converting their second set point. Tony Docherty's bravery got him sacked at Dundee – but if clubs are serious about developing young stars he's their man

Yet all his bravery got him was the sack. He didn't merely pay lip service to an issue that's held back Scottish football for years. No, Docherty went all in on the club's strategy of bringing through their own, developing them and making them better. Yet when he needed his managing director to show him a little understanding after a difficult campaign, John Nelms showed him the door. Presumably it wasn't news delivered by email, otherwise Docherty may still be waiting to learn his fate. You'd pay a penny for his thoughts this week, though, when it was confirmed the SFA were running with a new idea to help freshen up the stagnant waters of youth development. A study showed Docherty's Dundee topped a table on under-21 players in the top flight. Figures from CIES Observatory highlighted how he offered 24.8 per cent of the team's available first-team minutes to players of that age and under. At the other end of the scale, St Mirren were ranked bottom, with just 0.8 per cent. Who knows, Docherty maybe takes little satisfaction from those numbers given they did him little good in the long run. He ultimately kept the club out of the relegation zone and improved players to a level where they were being snapped up by the Old Firm. Luke McCowan's move to Celtic in August didn't exactly do Docherty any favours. But he played a huge part in the midfielder catching the eye of Brendan Rodgers. Just like he did for Lyall Cameron, who has signed a pre-contract to join Rangers. Josh Mulligan will be next to step up a level, with a number of clubs ready to lure him away, including Gers. Dundee as a club just didn't seem to take any of that into consideration when they emptied their manager, did they? Yet at a time when our elite clubs seem to finally be taking seriously the need to help our aspiring prospects, Docherty should take great pride in having the courage of everyone else's convictions. Every manager talks the talk when it comes to bringing through young players. In the meantime, Docherty shouldn't be waiting long for his next opportunity. Not if our clubs are serious about developing young players and turning them from prospects into assets. But that has to include an appreciation that there are going to be ups and downs along the way. You can't help think that a club like Motherwell could be the ideal fit for someone like Docherty. Wherever he ends up, he needs employers who are prepared to give him the chance, patience and understanding that he's been willing to give others. Michail Antonio set to quit West Ham after horror car crash despite being offered new contract amid ‘unique' situation

The Hammers striker, 35, has not played since his horror crash in December, which required surgery on a broken leg. The Jamaica international has been offered a short-term deal with a far lower base salary than his current £90,000-a-week contract. Significant bonuses are included for any appearances Antonio would make next season. However, West Ham's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is seeking a higher base salary offer and is holding out for offers from elsewhere. The club have done all they can to support his recovery, but will not be improving upon their offer and have indicated they would be pleased for Antonio should he secure better terms from another club. Spending money is tight at the London Stadium this summer and there is a focus on bringing the average age of Graham Potter's squad down. Antonio, who is confident he will be able to play again, had urged Potter to include him in a Premier League squad towards the end of the season but it was thought too big of a risk. The striker is now hoping to make his first appearance since the December car crash with Jamaica at this summer's Gold Cup, which starts next week. Impressive performances with Jamaica could spark interest from other clubs, which is limited at this stage. Antonio has already branched out to prepare for life after football, working with the BBC's Morning Live and as a pundit for TNT Sports during their coverage of the Conference League final. "However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer. "As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level." Former West Ham captain Kurt Zouma, who spent last season on loan at Saudi Pro League club Al-Orobah FC, will also formally depart with his contract ending this month. Danny Ings, Aaron Creswell, Vladimir Coufal and Lukasz Fabianski had already been confirmed as leaving at the end of their deals this summer.
