Finland backs space tech ICEYE firm with R&D funding

Reuters5 hours ago

HELSINKI, June 19 (Reuters) - Finland's business promotion agency has granted research and development funding to satellite and defence technology company ICEYE, the two entities said on Thursday, in what marks another step in European efforts to support the booming sector.
Privately owned ICEYE has grown rapidly in recent years and says its fleet of 48 Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites providing near real-time imaging is now the largest, counting Ukraine, NATO and Japan among its customers.
Government agency, Business Finland, said it has assigned 41.1 million euros ($47.2 million) to the Finland-based company's 250-million-euro ($287 million) investment programme to strengthen its position as a global pioneer in space and defence technology.
"It will strengthen the entire space and defence sector and have a wide-ranging positive impact across the whole ecosystem," head of Business Finland Lassi Noponen said in a statement.
With the Ukraine war raging next to its borders and global security threats on the rise, the European Union has embarked on a 800 billion euro programme to shore up its defence, with tech startups expected to play a significant role.
ICEYE's satellite constellation works by bouncing a radar beam off the surface of the Earth from approximately 550 km (342 miles) in space to build a detailed picture of the ground, regardless of weather conditions or daylight, the company said.
"We have clearly ended up being in the right place at the right time with this technology. There is a great need to develop such sovereign capability," ICEYE chief of strategy Pekka Laurila said.
In addition to data, ICEYE also sells radar imaging satellites, as many countries are increasingly keen on having their own capacity to be able to monitor around the clock what happens on the globe.
ICEYE's CEO Rafal Modrzewski said the increased interest in space was driven both by technological advances and the Ukraine war that highlighted the importance of satellite technologies.
"This technology will be critical for national security," he told Reuters in a recent interview.
The 250 million-euro investment programme will allow it to expand its satellite manufacturing capabilities, develop new sensors and upgrade its satellite platforms, the company said.

Netflix getting broadcast TV channels for first time ever in app makeover – but only some telly fans will see first lot

NETFLIX is adopting broadcast channels for the first time after nearly all but killing off traditional linear TV. The streaming giant is picking up channels from TF1 Group, France's biggest commercial broadcaster, as part of a recently inked deal. 4 4 Viewers will be able to watch all five TF1 live channels, the Financial Times reported. The deal will reportedly bring an additional 30,000 hours worth of telly to Netflix next summer. TF1 offers scripted dramas, live sports and reality shows like The Voice. Only Netflix subscribers in France will be able to tune into the bonus content, the FT noted. However, if the partnership is successful, more linear channels may jump to streaming services in other parts of Europe and the US in future. Netflix will first wait to see how the TF1 deal fares before cutting any more broadcasting deals, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said in a statement. The companies did not reveal how much the deal was worth. Peters added that the partnership would help boost subscriber engagement. Netflix has further turned its attention to engagement, after pivoting away from sharing subscriber counts. 'By teaming up with France's leading broadcaster, we will provide French consumers with even more reasons to come to Netflix every day and to stay with us for all their entertainment,' Peters said. Netflix reveal huge list of movies and TV shows being axed next month – with some children's favourites in the mix The deal also means TF1 gets more eyeballs on the adverts it airs between shows. "As viewing habits shift toward on-demand consumption and audience fragmentation increases, this unprecedented alliance will enable our premium content to reach unparalleled audiences and unlock new reach for advertisers within an ecosystem that perfectly complements our TF1+ [streaming] platform,' Rodolphe Belmer, CEO of TF1 Group, said in a statement. It comes as streaming overtakes traditional TV for the first time in terms of viewership numbers. The milestone marks a steady shift towards internet-based telly, which has seen a near-doubling of streaming viewership since 2021 when it made up 26 per cent of TV use. Today that percentage stands at nearly 45 per cent, according to the latest figures released by Nielsen earlier this week. "It's a credit to media companies," said Karthik Rao, boss of data specialist Nielsen, which launched its Gauge report on viewing statistics in May 2021. "They have deftly adapted their programming strategies to meet their viewers where they are watching TV, whether it's on streaming or linear platforms." Netflix claims to have "over" 300million subscribers. The deal would also allow Netflix to grow its audience in France. As of 2022, Netflix had 10million French subscribers, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said at the time. While TF1 Group's broadcast channels have 58million viewers per month, according to the FT. Its streaming service, TF1+, also reportedly boasts 35million users per month. Use Netflix on a computer or laptop? Try these useful shortcuts Here are some handy keyboard shortcuts... Spacebar – toggle play / pause Enter – toggle play / pause F – full screen Esc – exit full screen Left Arrow – rewind 10 seconds Right Arrow – fast-forward 10 seconds Up arrow – volume up Down arrow – volume down M – mute toggle Shift-Alt-Left Click – adjust the streaming bitrate (to improve or reduce the quality of the video) 4

There are plenty of comparison websites out there that'll check prices for you - so don't be left paying more than you have to. Most of them work by comparing the prices across hundreds of retailers. Here are some that we recommend: Google Shopping is a tool that lets users search for and compare prices for products across the web. Simply type in keywords, or a product number, to bring up search results. Price Spy logs the history of how much something costs from over 3,000 different retailers, including Argos, Amazon, eBay and the supermarkets. Once you select an individual product you can quickly compare which stores have the best price and which have it in stock. Idealo is another website that lets you compare prices between retailers. All shoppers need to do is search for the item they need and the website will rank them from the cheapest to the most expensive one. CamelCamelCamel only works on goods being sold on Amazon. To use it, type in the URL of the product you want to check the price of.

UK manufacturing set for a funding boost to reduce energy costs

UK manufacturing is expected to receive support to ease energy costs and boost skills, the Guardian understands, as part of a long-awaited industrial strategy due to be unveiled next week. Energy-intensive industries have long complained that they pay too much for electricity compared with competitors in the EU, while the wider industrial sector has struggled to recruit skilled staff. As Nigel Farage's Reform party targets support in Britain's industrial heartlands, ministers are poised to pour funds into boosting the manufacturing workforce with proposals similar to a £600m package for the construction sector announced earlier this year, which underpins plans to build 1.5m homes. Ministers have drawn up plans to target energy costs through two policies, one targeted at businesses that use the most electricity – such as steel and aluminium – and another designed to support manufacturing more broadly. These are expected to be at the heart of the strategy, which could be announced as soon as Monday. First, the government will increase from 60% to 90% the 'network compensation charging' (NCC) scheme, a discount for energy-intensive businesses on the fees they pay to connect to the Grid. The discount, which is ultimately paid for by other electricity bill-payers including households, is available under the British Industry Supercharger iniative brought in by the previous government. Industry sources said increasing the discount would reduce costs for struggling steelmakers by about £6.50 per megawatt hour (MWh). This is expected to help major firms such as Tata and British Steel, which is under government control, manage the costly transition from blast furnaces to greener electric arc furnaces. However, industry sources said that, while the policy was welcome, the overall saving for the sector is only expected to be worth about £15m a year. Energy costs are likely to remain significantly higher than in Germany and France, chiefly because UK electricity prices are linked to the cost of wholesale gas, which is a larger part of the British energy mix than on the continent. Speaking at the Paris airshow earlier this week, the business and energy minister, Sarah Jones, said: 'Whether you're a company wanting to invest in the UK or whether you're an existing company in the UK, energy prices is a challenge. The fact that we're not competitive with it, with Europe, is the challenge.' For smaller manufacturers, ministers will consult on a new 'intensity threshold' to provide relief. The scheme, which could be up and running as soon as 2027, is expected to work by analysing the ratio between a company's energy usage and its turnover, adjusting the support on offer accordingly. Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we'll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning after newsletter promotion Make UK, the trade body for the sector, welcomed indications that firms are in line to receive the support they have long campaigned for. 'If we're going to move the dial in the industrial strategy we have to get manufacturers' eye-watering energy costs more in line with our competitors,,' said Stephen Phipson, chief executive of Make UK. 'This would be an incredibly welcome move for companies and provide a much-needed shot in the arm at a time when they are facing multiple challenges on all fronts. 'It would also give a vital kickstart to investment and help manufacturing support the government to deliver its growth mission to boost the economy.' The strategy is also likely to include greater powers for the state-owned British Business Bank to invest directly in businesses, particularly small and medium-sized startups. The department for business and trade declined to comment on the content of the industrial strategy. Ministers were expected to publish the industrial strategy earlier this year but the announcement was postponed as the government brought forward detailed plans for individual sectors.
