Rainwater: The most underused climate solution

In India's drought-prone regions, even the size of a wheat grain tells a story. In normal times, the grain is full and firm. In dry years, it shrinks to half its size — or doesn't grow at all, forcing families to switch to millets or abandon farming altogether. School-age girls are pulled from classrooms to help fetch water as nearby wells dry up. In many villages, the land is too parched for anything but millet, and even that is becoming uncertain. But then, one rainwater harvesting check dam is constructed — and suddenly, the next crop season tells a different story. Grain quality improves. Soil regenerates. Incomes stabilise. And hope returns.
Water scarcity impacts more than agriculture — it's multi-pervasive. Salinity rises. Soil degrades. Fluoride levels spike. And far beyond the field, it drives migration, weakens nutrition, restricts school attendance, and disproportionately burdens women. In the absence of water, livelihoods vanish, and the social fabric frays.
Groundwater is the primary source of irrigation for over 90% of farmers in arid regions, yet it continues to decline due to over-extraction and poor recharge. Over 53% of rural income in arid regions today comes from non-farm sources — not because people want to diversify, but because farming no longer pays. This is a silent but escalating crisis.
One of the most scalable solutions is also one of the oldest: rainwater harvesting. Simple structures like check dams, aquashafts, and recharge ponds can improve groundwater levels by 10–15% within two monsoons. Paired with techniques like drip irrigation and agroforestry, the impact multiplies — in soil health, yield stability, and climate resilience.
Ironically, modern technology has been both a boon and a bane. Deep tube wells, powered by subsidised electricity or solar energy, have allowed farmers to dig deeper for water — accelerating the collapse of groundwater levels. Without rainwater recharge, these systems become unsustainable.
That's where rainwater harvesting comes in—an ancient solution with modern urgency. More than 4,000 years ago, the Harappans of Dholavira harvested rainwater through an intricate system of stepped tanks and filtration chambers. If they could do it on an island in the Rann of Kutch, surely, we can do better today.
New models are emerging across India. For instance, in states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, Rotary International's Program of Scale is working on water conservation by building over 90 check dams and more than 700 water harvesting structures over five years, along with fruit tree cultivation, micro-irrigation systems, and farmer training.
As part of the initiative, a cluster of 500,000 fruit trees is being developed in Rajasthan. These will not only enhance income security but also act as carbon sinks, helping mitigate climate impact in one of the country's most vulnerable zones.
As farmers begin to earn from orchard-based models, they invest further—expanding plantations, adopting new techniques, and reducing dependency on mono-cropping. This creates a cycle of resilience and ownership that is both scalable and self-sustaining.
The success of such efforts lies not just in their outputs, but in what they represent: a shift from crisis response to climate adaptation. When communities, civil society, and local institutions collaborate around sustainable practices, the benefits ripple outward — touching not just yields, but dignity, education, and long-term economic stability.
As we observed World Environment Day recently, the message is clear: Invest in rainwater harvesting, strengthen local agriculture, and build resilience from the ground up. India does not need to wait for high-tech miracles — the solutions are already here.

U RBANM's Educational Charities celebrated Founder's Day on May 14 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of renowned philanthropist Dharmarathnakara Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar. Arvind Narrain, Secretary of the RBANM, spoke about the relevance of the Founder's vision today, saying, 'The Founder's notion on wealth was for the benefit of society and the definition of philanthropy is the diffusion of knowledge, precisely what he did with his endeavours.' He elaborated on the institutions that the Founder established as a part of his efforts to eradicate caste and gender discrimination, like the free English school in the Cantonment area, and the Govindammal school for the free education of girls. Gyanamurthy, currently part of Rotary International and an alumnus from 1950, shared an anecdote on how they were taught the meaning of charity in school. 'We were each given a sweet and asked to share it with a downtrodden child if we wanted one for ourselves, but we ended up sharing both,' he recalled, learning that charity means to become poor after giving. The event concluded with a musical rendition by folk artist and researcher Shilpa Mudbi. She presented her social take on the Yellamma folk story and informed the audience how the folk form has been able to create moments of community catharsis. Faculty from various departments presented original poems in Tamil, Hindi, and English on the topics of Dalit resistance, womanhood, and social identity. Representatives from over eight institutions marked their presence along with members of the board.

Jadavpur University has significantly enhanced its library facilities for visually impaired students with a Rs 40 lakh upgrade. This initiative, funded by Rotary International and alumni, provides advanced tools and resources, benefiting 150 JU students and others. KOLKATA: Jadavpur University has launched a major initiative to enhance its library facilities for visually impaired students, demonstrating its commitment to inclusive education. The comprehensive upgrade, costing Rs 40 lakh, will benefit 150 visually impaired students at JU, with access extended to students from other institutions. "There was just one 600 sq ft room with three PCs, a table and three cubicles to make audiobooks. The Braille embosser that is used to print Braille material was also stationed there. While it was difficult for multiple students to study at the same time given that they usually have a reader or listen to audio material, when the Braille embosser functioned which was often, it was virtually impossible to study as it made a lot of noise. There was a long-standing demand for a separate reading room and we have been able to provide a separate 700 sq ft space in the annex building where 20 students can study at a time," explained Bijoy Panda, associate professor in Education at JU and Centre for Person with Disability member, alongside prof Selim Box Mandal, prof Rajyeshwar Sinha and prof Amrita Basu. Pro VC Amitava Datta initiated contact with Global JU Alumni Foundation, resulting in Rotary International funding of Rs 40 lakh through Kolkata Rotary units, creating study space for 20 students. "At Jadavpur University, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that empowers all students to reach their full potential. The upgrade of our Accessible Library is a significant step towards this goal, and we are grateful to Rotary and Alumni for their support in making this vision a reality," said Datta. The project materialised through collaboration between Rotary International units from Kolkata and California, with funding from approximately 20 JU alumni associated with Global Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation, US, and JU Alumni Association, Georgia, US. The upgraded facility can now produce 15-20 audiobooks annually, up from two previously. "The new library will have Braille e-motion displays with Hindi and English speech output; Readit Zen Max scanners and magnifiers; Evo Daisy audiobook players; Dolphin publisher software; Basic-D D5 Braille embosser; GoVision Pro & Nikki video magnifiers, Sparsha transliteration software; and Canon multifunction and large-format printers," detailed Vishnu Dhandhania of Rotary Club Belur, collaborating with Rajit Chakravorti of Rotary Club of Danville San Ramon, California. Improvements include a unisex accessible restroom, tactile ramps, safety railings, soundproof recording rooms, a digital reading room for 20 students, and Braille signage throughout. Bengali PhD student Manjit Kumar Ram welcomed the improvements, noting the new Braille printers would resolve current note-taking challenges, while GoVision would assist low-vision students with reading.
