Kolkata: Fear still looms large among the residents of Maheshtala even as normalcy slowly returns to violence affected areas amid huge deployment of police and RAF, following the communal violence on Wednesday. The incident started over a "Tulsi Manch" and then several hundred people assembled, turning into a communal violence, with stone pelting, loot, arson and vandalism, including setting ablaze several police vehicles, motorbikes and autos and injury of several police personnel and senior officers. Meanwhile, three days after communal violence broke out in Maheshtala, the West Bengal Police Saturday, transferred the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) and IC of Rabindranagar Police Station in the area.
People in the area, said on Sunday that the locals are still under the grip of fear, though some shops have started opening in the Akra Fatak market. However, the crowd in the market place is missing.
"The shops in the Akra Fatak market are opening but very few in numbers. Hindi Sarvodaya Vidyalaya though opened on Friday, but the parents did not send their children. Mid-day meal of 150students got wasted. There are five schools in the locality but parents are fearing to send their children after the violence," a local Birendra told ET.
Birendra said there is a sense of fear despite the presence of police. People have never witnessed such violence earlier, he pointed out.
"The day incident happened, I went to my elder sister's house. Today, I have returned to Maheshtala. There is police picket everywhere in the area. Still the, there is a fear among the people. We have never seen such a riot since 1994," Amitabha Dasgupta, said.
"People are worried what will happen and if fresh violence erupts after June 16. The BNS 163, which was imposed on the day of violence, is imposed till June 16," Dasgupta added.
On Saturday, Maheshtala SDPO Kamrujjaman Molla has been transferred as assistant commandant of the State Armed Police (SAP) 3rd Battalion. Molla has been replaced by Syed Rezual Kabir, who was the inspector-in-charge of Rajarhat police station in the North 24 Parganas. Mukul Mia, Inspector-in-Charge, Rabindranagar police station, Diamond Harbour Police District, has been transferred to Darjeeling.
Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP calls for Hindu unity over Maheshtala incident. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar said, "After Malda and Murshidabad incidents, Hindus are deliberately targeted in South 24 Parganas district also. A Tulsi tree and temple was vandalized...Hindu asmita (sentiments) has been hurt in Maheshtala. Does Hindus don't have any sentiments?"

‘Huge conspiracy' against Assam since independence: Sarma on Dhubri row

1 2 Guwahati: A 'huge conspiracy' has been going on against the state since independence and eradicating it would require time, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday, while addressing the recent communal tension in Dhubri and the subsequent shoot-on-sight order, post-6 pm, after a piece of meat was reportedly recovered near a place of worship. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Dibrugarh, Sarma, said, "We have already taken action. Assam is a critical state. People won't stop indulging in anti-national activities just because I issued a warning. This is part of a larger conspiracy that has its roots dating back to the days of independence." So far, over 40 people have been arrested in connection with the incident after Eid on June 7. The CM further said, "So, it won't end with just a warning. It's not that simple. It requires sustained effort, and we must continue working on it." Taking to his X handle, Sarma said Goalpara police had arrested five individuals on Sunday for "allegedly throwing beef near a temple in a deliberate attempt to incite communal tension post Eid-ul-Zuha." "A case has been registered and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of law," wrote Sarma. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo Meanwhile, opposition parties, including Congress, criticised the govt for implementing the shoot-on-sight order. Condemning the CM's directive, the opposition said the incident and subsequent clashes highlighted the the BJP-led govt's intelligence failure. The state's Congress president, Gaurav Gogoi, said, "This entire episode shows the failure of the home department. Why was there no intelligence input? The govt has failed to protect the sanctity of our religious places." He also alleged that RSS has infiltrated every village in Assam ahead of the Assembly polls early next year and is attempting to create enmity between communities. Meanwhile, AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam said there was no situation on the ground which could justify a shoot-on-sight order and alleged that the directive selectively targeted one particular community.

FIR against Bengal BJP chief for ‘hurling slipper', Sikh leaders seek apology

An FIR has been registered against Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar at Kalighat police station in Kolkata for allegedly throwing a slipper at a Sikh official. The FIR, based on a complaint by local Sikh community members, has been lodged under BNS sections 208 (offence of non-attendance in obedience to an order from a public servant) 302 (offence of intentionally hurting religious feelings), 115(2) (deals with the offense of voluntarily causing hurt). Accusing the Union minister of 'deliberate and intentional act', the members of the Sikh community demanded an apology from the BJP leader, saying they were 'deeply hurt and disappointed by the incident'. Majumdar, however, dismissed the charge, saying it was not a slipper, but only a 'slipper-shaped paper' that was used to hit the police, and alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was behind the protest by the Sikh community leaders. The incident reportedly took place on June 12 when BJP leaders led by Majumdar were detained near the Chief Minister's residence in the Kalighat area after they were stopped from visiting violence-hit Mahestala in South 24 Parganas. A purported video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The Sikh community leaders alleged that the BJP was purposely doing selectively against the community, and cited the farm protest in Punjab. Claiming that the incident was an accident, Majumdar said the person on whose head the 'paper-cut' fell was part of his security detail and that he intended to throw the paper at the police. Did he file a complaint, he asked.

‘BJP protecting land mafias, looting public resources'

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday termed the BJP as a "political gang that shelters criminals and land mafias". Addressing party workers from various districts at the Samajwadi Party state headquarters in Lucknow, Yadav alleged that "the BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh has pushed the state into anarchy and crime and corruption is at its peak". "The BJP is a political gang filled with criminals. It protects land mafias who forcibly capture govt and poor people's land. Every department is steeped in corruption. Loot is rampant in all works. Education, health, electricity, and law and order have been ruined," Yadav said. Accusing the BJP and RSS of hypocrisy, he said: "BJP and RSS talk big about 'swadeshi', but why doesn't the RSS chief ask the Centre to promote 'swadeshi'? The market is flooded with Chinese goods. Why is 'swadeshi' not a priority," he asked. "People will dismantle BJP's fraud in the 2027 elections," he said.
