Bolton Wanderers sporting director Fergal Harkin sets starting date for new post
FERGAL Harkin is expected to take up his role as Bolton Wanderers' new sporting director after his final game at Standard Liege this weekend.
The Belgian press claim Saturday's game against FCV Dender will be his last in post, after which former Belgium international Marc Wilmots will be installed as his replacement.
Irishman Harkin played for Leicester City and Bohemians before moving into marketing with Nike and then spending a successful decade with Manchester City.
Before taking up the job with Standard, he was strongly linked with the director of football job at Celtic and his appointment at Wanderers was described as a 'momentous occasion' by chairman Sharon Brittan when it was confirmed in March.
Harkin will oversee all football operations, including player recruitment, academy development, scouting, sports science and performance analysis at Wanderers, working with head coach Steven Schumacher and his incoming head of recruitment, Jimmy Dickinson.
Though he will only be in office from early next week, Harkin has already liaised closely with Schumacher about the type of players that are needed to push Bolton to the top of League One.
'We've been in regular contact for a while now,' Schumacher told The Bolton News. 'Any head coach or manager has got to have a clear idea of how they want their team to play and we'll recruit to a certain system, we will try and get profiles of players who we think play in that system and help the team.
'We also have to recruit for some future planning too – we need some youth in this squad. We also need some experience. We'll have our hands all over it.
'But I enjoy that side of it, we can't wait to get going.'
Pre-season is already taking shape, with Wanderers expected to convene at the end of June for pre-season testing, followed by a training camp, with details yet to be confirmed.
The likes of Josh Sheehan, Eoin Toal, Will Forrester, Aaron Morley and Jordi Osei-Tutu are expected to be free from the injuries which curtailed their season, and there has not yet been any confirmation on Kyle Dempsey or Carlos Mendes Gomes. Victor Adeboyejo is unlikely to figure until the tail end of the year.
The pre-season fixture schedule is also nearly complete, leaving Schumacher to push on with plans to strengthen the squad.
'Pretty much pre-season is organised,' he said. 'Knowing a couple of weeks ago that we are where we are, there wouldn't be a play-off game to extend it all, it has given us more time to plan things.
'We sat down with the sports science and medical team and figured out what the pre-season would look like. The fixtures are getting there or thereabouts, we know when we are going on the trip, so the next thing is recruitment.
'Nothing can happen right at this moment but the conversations and the planning on how we attack it is well underway.'
Asked of his own plans for a summer break, Schumacher admitted the workload doesn't make it easy.
He added: 'I'll have a week or two with the family trying to switch off but I can honestly say I never do, the phone never stops, it's what I love and why I do this job.
'I've got an understanding wife, she's one of the best – or the best I've ever had, anyway!'

Improvement on the ball next step for O'Neill's NI
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill wants to see his side enjoy more of the ball in Tuesday night's friendly against Iceland in Belfast. They defended resolutely for long periods of Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Denmark in Copenhagen but ultimately were undone by Christian Eriksen's 67th-minute winner. Advertisement An own goal from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had given the visitors the lead after only five minutes, but Denmark equalised through their first shot on target when Gustav Isaksen curled in a fine effort in first-half stoppage time. While Northern Ireland have had some strong results without the majority of the ball during O'Neill's second spell in charge, the former Stoke manager believes doing more in possession will be the next step for his side. "We were never going to be a dominant possession-based team against any of these teams," said O'Neill after Denmark had more than 70% possession on Saturday. "We're asking players who play their football at a League One or Championship level to go out against players who play their football in the top five leagues in Europe. There is a difference in terms of the level that the players play their football. Caoimhin Kelleher ‘buzzing' as he completes £18m move to Brentford from Liverpool
Goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher has left Liverpool to join Brentford in a £18m deal. It brings to an end a nine-year stay at the club, with Liverpool receiving an initial £12.5m for Kelleher and add-ons taking the overall fee to £18m. Kelleher is expected to take over as Brentford's first choice goalkeeper following the departure of Dutch international Mark Flekken, who has joined Bayer Leverkusen for around £11m. 'I'm buzzing, I'm really happy to be here,' said the 26-year-old. 'I don't think it was very difficult for me to leave [Liverpool]. I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a number one and to play every week. 'I heard of some interest a number of weeks ago. Once I knew Brentford was in for me, it was definitely one I was really excited about and wanted to do as quickly as possible.' He kept 24 clean sheets during his time with the Reds and featured in more than 40 cup matches. Despite his success, Kelleher has been open about his ambition to play regular first-team football. Speaking last month, he said: 'I think I've said it before as well that I feel like I'm a number one and I feel like I'm good enough to play week in, week out. That's what I'm looking to do.' This season, Kelleher featured in 20 matches for Liverpool, ten of which came in the Premier League. However, his path to more minutes became even more complicated with Liverpool set to welcome Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in July. The Georgian international is expected to compete with Alisson for the No. 1 spot following a £29m transfer agreed last summer. His former club Ringmahon Rangers are also set to benefit from the transfer thanks to a 20% sell-on clause included in his original move to Liverpool, netting them a substantial seven figure sum. Kelleher becomes the second major departure from Liverpool this summer, following former vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold's £10m move to Real Madrid.
