Midfielder Harkin departs Derry City for Sligo

Ciaron Harkin has departed Derry City to join fellow League of Ireland club Sligo Rovers on a permanent deal. The midfielder joins the Bit O'Red until the end of the season with the club retaining the option of extending his contract for the 2026 season. Harkin departs his hometown club after a six-year stint in his second spell at the Brandywell, making 109 appearances but only six this season. The 29-year-old missed both the 2022 and '23 seasons after suffering back-to-back ACL injuries before joining Irish League side Coleraine on loan in July 2024, returning to Derry City in January for the beginning of the League of Ireland season. Sligo currently sit ninth in the League of Ireland Premier Division table, 11 points ahead of basement club Cork City and just three points behind eighth-placed Galway United. Harkin becomes the second former Derry City player to join Sligo in the summer transfer window after defender Patrick McClean joined the club earlier this month.

LOI transfers: Jamie Stott joins Derry City with Ciaron Harkin moving to Sligo Rovers

Derry City have brought in defender Jamie Stott from crisis club Morecambe. The 27-year old has joined the Brandywell club on an 18-month deal, offering a new option as a left-sided centre-back for manager Tiernan Lynch. Stott was voted Players' Player of the Season at Morecambe last year as the Shrimpers were relegated from the Football League. They are currently battling for their very survival as a entity due to financial and ownership issues, opening the door for Derry to sign Stott. He counts Oldham Athletic, Stockport and Halifax Town among his previous sides. City boss Lynch is pleased with his latest addition: "Jamie comes here with plenty of experience in the EFL and National League and will strengthen our defensive options ahead of a very busy few months. "He's a big, strong lad and seems happy with the ball at his feet. "He just arrived this morning and took part in a full training session today and we're really looking forward to working with him." Dipo Akinyemi, Adam Frizzell and Brandon Fleming have already moved to Derry this window, as well as loan signing Alex Bannon. Midfielder Ciaron Harkin is the latest player to join Sligo Rovers, departing the Brandywell. Harkin signs with Rovers until the end of the 2025 season, with the club retaining an option on the player for 2026. The 29-year-old is the sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with John Russell already adding Patrick McClean, Seb Quirk, Ryan O'Kane, James McManus and Sean Stewart this month. The Derry native began his senior career with the Candystripes and has had his career blighted by injuries in recent years. He was a regular for City from 2019-2021 but later suffered devastating cruciate ligament ruptures which kept him sidelined for almost two years. Harkin made a return to action last year and went out on loan to Coleraine at the end of the year to get game time under his belt. Lynch gave Harkin six appearances this campaign, but he struggled to break into the side, leading to Bit O' Red boss John Russell making a move. Russell said: "It's a brilliant signing of a player I've always admired. He's a midfielder who can do a bit of everything. He's tenacious, good on the ball, legs, energy, he's coming to us at the stage of his career for a fresh challenge. "He's a Derry boy, he's had his injuries in the past but he's over those now. He's hungry to play, sitting on the bench is not easy for any player but especially at his age, he's in the prime of his career, at 29."

Minister Harkin welcomes record €275.4bn National Development, pledges regional investment for Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal

The updated plan, published by Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Jack Chambers, includes an additional €34 billion in capital funding compared to the original 2021–2030 framework. This brings the total investment to €102.4 billion over the next five years, with a further €100 billion earmarked through to 2035. This revised NDP represents the most substantial capital allocation in the history of the State, aiming to secure Ireland's future and deliver on vital infrastructure projects. 'This is a once-in-a-generation investment that must deliver real progress for people in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal' said Minister Harkin The revised NDP focuses on transformational infrastructure across key sectors including housing, water, energy, and transport, alongside major investments in health, disability services, and education. Speaking after the launch Minister Harkin said ' I support the plan's emphasis on Balanced/Equitable regional development, ensuring all parts of the country benefit from this investment. This is absolutely crucial for me because we have seen a history of underinvestment in the Northern and Western region. "This Review commits to ensuring a 50:50 distribution of future growth as outlined in the National Planning Framework and this will mean more investment in infrastructure, roads, rail, water, electricity, the construction of homes for families and individuals in the region and the provision of adequate services especially in healthcare and education including lifelong education which relates to my Department. "We also need to ensure sensible, long-term planning, particularly in the face of global trade tensions and ongoing economic uncertainty. Equally investing in children's disability services and expanding access to childcare and school places is an important part of the plan.' In regard to her own Department she stated: 'Investing in further education and vocational training to meet the growing demand for construction workers required to deliver the expanded pipeline of national projects is central to the delivery of housing. "My department's emphasis on expanding the number of apprenticeships especially in construction and green skills will play a central role here and combined with the drive to embed modern methods of construction in our apprenticeship courses we hope to see an acceleration of construction delivery in the next number of years'. 'Each Government Department has now been charged with delivering essential infrastructure, and I will continue to ensure that the revised NDP achieves meaningful outcomes for the people of Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal,' she said.
