Uruguay close in on World Cup qualification with 2-0 win over Venezuela
MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay moved a step closer to securing a place at the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario on Tuesday — a result that also ended a four-match winless streak in South American qualifiers.
Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts in front in the 42nd minute, heading home at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner.
Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that guarantees Marcelo Bielsa's side at least an inter-confederation play-off berth.
In other qualifiers, Colombia led already-qualified Argentina 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Luis Díaz, while second-placed Ecuador can secure a World Cup spot if they avoid defeat in Peru.
In São Paulo, Paraguay will qualify with either a win or a draw against Brazil, while the hosts can book their place in the tournament with a victory.

MIAMI: Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for Saturday's Club World Cup opener against Al-Ahly, with coach Javier Mascherano forced to reshuffle his backline due to a string of injuries. Full-back Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. "They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game," Mascherano told a press conference on Friday. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre-back David Martinez. Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro, who took charge last month following the departure of Marcel Koller, believes Messi still has what it takes to shine. "His skill has always been his vision of the game and that has not changed. He is not a coach but he guides the players around him, he's surrounded with young talent." LONDON: David Beckham's knighthood is the culmination of years of tireless efforts to transcend football and turn himself into a global icon at the "intersection of sport, fashion and business." He had long dreamed of becoming a sir and King Charles III made it a reality when he announced his birthday's honours list on Friday, marking the end of a decades-long journey travelled with his Spice Girl wife Victoria, creator of the eponymous fashion brand. The honour, one of the highest bestowed by the UK state, "is a powerful symbolic marker", Marie Agnes Parmentier, professor of marketing at the University of Montreal and author of several papers on "Posh and Becks", explained to AFP. It "reinforces his image as a respectable, committed, and, first and foremost, British man," she added. The knighthood could present new opportunities for the 50-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, "particularly in diplomatic, charitable or political spheres", said Parmentier.
