Shivambu drew the ire of many South Africans, including his own party, the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party, when he rubbed shoulders with Bushiri, who escaped and fled to Malawi in 2020 after securing bail in a rape, fraud and money laundering case.

Gardee succeeded Shivambu as deputy president of the EFF after he dumped the red berets for former President Jacob Zuma's MK Party.
In the latest towards Shivambu and Bushiri, an Israeli flag was seen behind Bushiri and with the context of South Africa's stance on the settler state's war and alleged genocide on Palestine, some have accused Shivambu of supporting the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

However, Shivambu has historically condemned Israel's attack on Hamas and Palestinians.
"Condemning Hamas is an act of cowardice and certainly when we take over political power in South Africa, we will openly associate with and protect its right to defend Palestinians. #HandsOffHamas," he posted in October of 2023 on the Elon Musk owned platform.
On the trip, Shivambu posted: "Thank you my brother, Prophet Bushiri for hosting us and for the kind words. The government scale amount of work you do to economically, educationally, socially and spiritually uplift our people is unparalleled now and in history.
"I know that the leadership and people of Malawi appreciate and cherish the so many massive programmes you do for the people on the ground. Continue doing the good work."
EFF MP Carl Niehaus made his disdain for the politician known.

US intensifies attack on ICC in bid to shield Israel, Netanyahu
The United States on Wednesday defiantly expanded efforts to hobble the International Criminal Court (ICC) over its prosecution of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sanctioning a judge from ally France. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also targeted a Canadian judge in a separate case in his latest volley of sanctions against the tribunal in The Hague, which is backed by virtually all other Western democracies as a court of last resort. 'The Court is a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel,' Rubio said in a statement, using a term popular with President Donald Trump's supporters. He attacked the court for investigating US and Israeli citizens 'without the consent of either nation'. Among the four people newly slapped with sanctions was Judge Nicolas Guillou of France, who is presiding over a case in which an arrest warrant was issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. France – whose president, Emmanuel Macron, was in Washington two days earlier – expressed 'dismay' over the action. The sanctions are 'in contradiction to the principle of an independent judiciary', a foreign ministry spokesman said in Paris. The ICC in its own statement denounced the 'flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution'. 'The ICC will continue fulfilling its mandate, undeterred, in strict accordance with its legal framework as adopted by the States Parties and without regard to any restriction, pressure or threat. The court's prosecution alleges Netanyahu is responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel's offensive in Gaza, including by intentionally targeting civilians and using starvation as a method of war. Netanyahu saluted Rubio for his 'decisive act against a smear campaign of lies against the State of Israel' and the Israeli army. Israel launched the massive offensive in response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas against Israel, in which mostly civilians were killed. The ICC has also sought the arrest of former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas commander Mohammed Deif, who has since been confirmed killed by Israel. Guillou is a veteran jurist who previously participated in trials over Kosovo and Lebanon. He worked for several years in the United States assisting the Justice Department with judicial cooperation during Barack Obama's presidency. Under the sanctions, he will be refused entry to the United States and any assets he has in the world's largest economy will be blocked – measures more often taken against US adversaries than citizens of friendly nations. Also targeted by the latest US sanctions was a Canadian judge, Kimberly Prost, who was involved in a case that authorised an investigation into alleged crimes committed during the war in Afghanistan, including by US forces. Rubio also slapped sanctions on two deputy prosecutors – Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. The State Department said the two were punished by the United States for supporting 'illegitimate ICC actions against Israel', including by supporting the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant. Rubio imposed sanctions on four other ICC judges in June. The Trump administration has roundly rejected the authority of the court, which was set up as a court of last resort when national systems do not allow for justice. Trump on Friday welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska even though Putin faces an ICC arrest warrant, a factor that has stopped him from travelling more widely since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. US imposes further sanctions on ICC judges and prosecutors

This is the latest move against the court that previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The ICC previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. In a statement released by the US State Department on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that two judges and two prosecutors were being added to a list of ICC members sanctioned by the administration of President Donald Trump. The new sanctions are against Judge Kimberly Prost, Judge Nicolas Yann Guillou, Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan and Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang. According to the statement, Prost is being designated for ruling to authorise the ICC's investigation into US personnel in Afghanistan, Guillou is being designated for ruling to authorise the ICC's issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. Deputy Prosecutors Shameem Khan and Niang are being designated for continuing to support what Rubio calls "illegitimate ICC actions against Israel." The US listed the implications of sanctions. Put simply, anything they own in the US, or controlled by Americans, is frozen and must be reported to the US Treasury. If a company is 50% or more owned by these sanctioned people, that company is also blocked. Americans (or anyone doing business through the U.S.) are not allowed to do business with these sanctioned people or their companies—no money, goods, or services—unless they get special permission from the Treasury. After the US State Department announcement, the court on Wednesday condemned the expanded US sanctions, calling it an "attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution' and the victims of war crimes around the world and said it would continue its work 'without regard to any restriction, pressure or threat'. Netanyahu welcomed the US' move, dubbing it a 'decisive act against a smear campaign of lies against the State of Israel'. There was an initial round of sanctions targeting several ICC officials by the Trump administration earlier this year. Free 1996 Constitution booklet signed by South African greats now valued at nearly R1 million
A free 1996 booklet titled "The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa", bearing the signatures of South African greats, is now valued at nearly R1 million. These were the words uttered by former President Nelson Mandela when he was asked to autograph a 1996 booklet, "The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa", lovingly gathered over a few years by retired chef Neels du Plooy. Now the much-travelled booklet is on sale on Facebook Marketplace with a price tag of a million rand, which might seem steep were it not for the fact that it has the signatures of 30 iconic South African political leaders and judicial pioneers who crafted our peaceful transition to democracy. Many South Africans got a copy of the beloved booklet when it was released, but while ours have no collector value, Du Plooy's is sure to pique the interest of collectors of Mandela memorabilia and those fascinated in our transition to democracy. It has the signatures of former presidents, Nelson Mandela and Mbeki, as well as the last apartheid president, FW de Klerk and current head of state, Cyril Ramaphosa. It also bears the signature of the King of Lesotho and the first Speaker of Parliament, Frene Ginwala, Albie Sachs, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court in 1999 and a host of others. Image: Supplied "Mandela was the only one who autographed the booklet who was interested to see who else had signed it, saying 'I know him, I know him and I know her'", Du Plooy told "Independent Media Lifestyle". Du Plooy, 71, was given a copy of the booklet by a journalist friend, and he wasted no time as a chef with Fedics to gather as many signatures as he could of the influential personalities whenever the opportunity arose. "I cooked 99 percent of them, so I always carried the booklet with me and would ask the head chef if I could ask them for autographs. "I even cooked for former President Thabo Mbeki and his wife on a game farm at Mapungubwe in 1999, where we spent four days just before Christmas, and that is when I got both their signatures," he said. He was involved in the catering for the inauguration of Mbeki. Image: Debbie Yazbek "In the late '90s, I was at the opening of the Lesotho Highlands Katse Dam and took the booklet with me, and after the meal, there were a lot of MPs, including Ramaphosa and five or six premiers of the first administration whose signatures I was able to get." That's where he also got the signature of King Letsi III, ruler of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Du Plooy managed to get the signatures of George Bizos, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Kader Asmal, Arthur Chaskalson and Govan Mbeki. Du Plooy, who lives in Sandringham, Johannesburg, was later a chef at a restaurant in the Joburg Civic Centre in Braamfontein, and so he used that opportunity to gather signatures of important people when they came to dine. He believes it is the only booklet in the world that bears the signatures of four state presidents. But there is one signature at the top left of the first page of the booklet which he has not been able to identify. "I only got signatures of significant people at the time, so it was someone important, I am just unable to work out whose signature it is," he said. The signature at the top left of this page has turned out to be a puzzler for Neels du Plooy, who only sought the signatures of significant players in our transition to democracy. Image: Supplied Du Plooy said there is one signature he wishes it had, and that is of Roelf Meyer, who was a key drafter of the Constitution, with whom he has lost contact. The Marketplace advert states that the booklet is accompanied by a provenance certificate and official ISBN registration. "This volume is a verified original - an irreplaceable piece of South African history... Ideal for collectors of Mandela-era memorabilia, constitutional scholars or institutions preserving democratic heritage."
