A former BYU runner was the top American finisher in Monday's Boston Marathon

Former BYU runner Conner Mantz fell just short of his goal of becoming the first American man in 11 years to win the Boston Marathon on Monday, finishing less than 30 seconds behind winner John Korir of Kenya.

Mantz and fellow BYU alums Clayton Young and Rory Linkletter were in the lead pack for much of the race, but they were unable to stick with Korir when he broke away with about six miles remaining.
Korir, who won the 2024 Chicago Marathon in 2:02:43, finished the 2025 Boston Marathon in 2:04:45.
Mantz stayed with the first chase pack, which ended up about 20 seconds behind Korir.
Mantz ultimately just missed the podium Monday, finishing fourth in 2:05:08.
Mantz's previous best marathon time was 2:07:47, according to Citius Mag.
Linkletter, who held the lead at the halfway point, finished sixth in 2:07:02.

Young finished just behind him in seventh in 2:07:04.
Like Mantz, Linkletter and Young set new personal best times.

American tennis star Coco Gauff makes major change just days before US Open
Coco Gauff is making a big change before her start at the 2025 U.S. Open in New York. The American tennis star has parted ways with Matt Daly, one of her coaches, while bringing in biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan, according to multiple reports. "Only have good things to say about Coco, enjoyed working with her," Daly told Bounces, confirming their split. Why would the 21-year-old make the switch now before the final Grand Slam of the year? The answer may have to do with her serve. Since her shocking first-round exit at Wimbledon, Gauff has struggled with her serve, which plays a tremendous factor in beating the best in the world, especially in tournaments like the U.S. Open. MacMillan has a history of fixing one of the best serves in women's tennis, as world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka used his expertise to correct that part of her game. MacMillan was spotted on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court Wednesday morning as Gauff was hitting with Elina Svitolina. "A lot of things add up, and this could be a really good relationship," ESPN's Darren Cahill told Forbes about Gauff and MacMillan. "He's very thorough. …I've spoken to him many, many times before, and the fact that he's got experience with different athletes from different sports, both male and female, he uses the new technology, he goes to the video a lot, really breaks down the biomechanics." MacMillan is the founder of Sports Science Lab, which specializes in sports performance, fitness, and physical rehabilitation. Gauff's game hasn't been completely off this year, having won the French Open back in May. But her serve has been inconsistent, and she clearly wants to get ahead of that before a tournament many across the U.S. would love to see her win again on home soil. Gauff was the 2023 champion in Flushing, Queens, but she was unable to defend her title in 2024 as she lost in the fourth round. Sabalenka went on to defeat another American, Jessica Pegula, in straight sets to claim the victory. Gauff fired her coach, Brad Gilbert, following that fourth-round exit at the U.S. Open.

Two Georgia Bulldogs make freshman All-American team
Georgia football will have to rely on some young players contributing to reach their goals for the season. On3 dropped their freshman All-American team and Georgia has two players on that list. On offense, offensive lineman Juan Gaston was a selection. The freshman is listed at 6-foot-7, 360-pounds is in a three-man competition for the starting right guard job. Gaston has amazing size and head coach Kirby Smart has said that he has been getting into better shape since being an early enrollee. Gaston was ranked a five-star recruit and the nation's No. 18 ranked player, per 247Sports. On defense, highly-touted defensive lineman Elijah Griffin was another Georgia freshman All-American selection. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound defensive lineman already has drawn comparisons to Georgia great and All-Pro defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Griffin is the headliner of this freshmen class that could see several key contributors for the Bulldogs. Expect to see Griffin, a former five-star recruit, to put his talent on display on Saturday for the Bulldogs early and often. Griffin was ranked as the consensus No. 1 defensive lineman and a top-five recruit across all recruiting services. Three Georgia Bulldogs also earned USA TODAY Sports preseason All-American honors.
