As Pune DRDO facility reaches key milestones in humanoid development, former chairman puts focus on robotic soldier

Former DRDO chairman G Satheesh Reddy on Thursday highlighted the country's ambitious vision of developing a robotic soldier and positioning India as a frontrunner in the field. His remarks came as DRDO's premier laboratory in Pune, Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), has reached significant milestones in humanoid robot development.
Reddy, who was DRDO chairman and scientific advisor to the defence minister and is currently advisor to the Andhra Pradesh government, was speaking at the national workshop on Advanced Legged Robotics in Pune. The three-day workshop, which began on Thursday, has been organised by the R&DE(E) in association with College of Engineering Pune Technological University under the aegis of Pune chapter of the Indian Society of Systems for Science and Engineering.
The legged robotic systems — such as bipedal and quadrupedal robots — have a wide range of practical applications across sectors, including defence and security, healthcare, domestic assistance, space exploration and in industries. However, the design and development of autonomous legged robots present numerous technological challenges. The workshop aims to shed light on key technological domains and critical areas associated with the advancement of legged robotic systems.
In his inaugural address, Reddy said, 'The industries and academic institutes are contributing in a big way to the advancements in the field of robotics. I don't think there's any good institute in the country where at least one person isn't working on robotics. In almost all institutions, individuals and teams are working on some kind of robot. But these efforts need to be synergised in the light of the major advancements in the related fields of Artificial Intelligence, material sciences, computational technologies, power sources. How will this synergy come, who will take this lead, can be deliberated upon in this conference.'
'Government of India is creating structures in a focused manner towards work in certain areas. There are so many missions that the government has launched. It includes Artificial Intelligence Mission, Deep Tech mission, Quantum mission among others. So can we impress upon the government to come up with advanced robotic or humanoid related mission, which can spearhead the development in the country? The national mission will also be helpful to other domains. The R&DE Engineers should be able to come up with a robotic soldier and related applications. I am happy that this conference is happening on a very serious technology driven subject. I am sure that all the people sitting here and all the teams working in the field will be able to take the work forward. And we hope to see the dream of having a robotic soldier is realised with our country being the frontrunner in this direction,' Reddy said.
His remarks on development of robotic soldiers comes at a time when the Centre for Systems and Technologies for Advanced Robotics (C-STAR) at the R&DE(E) has reached key milestones in the development of a humanoid. The C-STAR targets the development of robotic mule and humanoid as their primary goals; however, in the long term the centre will be developing technologies in the areas of biomimetic robots, collaborative operations of multiple robotic elements, Swarm robots, flexible bio-inspired robots, advanced control, efficient actuators, low energy motion and Cognition, officials have said.
Officials said the two key system of the humanoid project, the humanoid upper body and humanoid stage-1 Biped which were at display at the workshop venue, have achieved important milestones. The humanoid upper body is designed to push, pull or slide doors, push obstacles and perform operations in high-risk zones. It can also safely handle hazardous objects like mines, explosives, liquids collaboratively with both arms and perform operations day, night, indoor and outdoor. The Stage-1 Biped has been designed to have the stability, control and balance during locomotion in unstructured terrain, fall and push recovery, real time map generation and navigation and can perform complex autonomous operations in high-risk zones.
Among the key dignitaries present at the conference were Dr BHVS Narayana Murthy, Vice Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Sunil Bhirud, Vice Chancellor of College of Engineering Pune Technological University, Ankathi Raju, Director of the Armament Research and Development Establishment, and Makarand Joshi, Director R&DE(E). The exhibition attracts schoolchildren, as it includes participation of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Institute for Plasma Research, Aryabhata Mobile Planetarium, Karnataka State Scientific Research Council, among other agencies. The Institute for Plasma Research in Gujarat has exhibited its devices, which include a plasma fusion device (Tokamak), a high frequency plasma device used to treat skin. Aryabhata Mobile Planetarium gives special experience to participants. The DRDO has exhibited the models of radars it has developed and a documentary about its anti-satellite missile test. Two buses from the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum carry the models on science concepts. Karnataka State Scientific Research Council president Hulikal Nataraj, who inaugurated the exhibition, said that it would help inculcate scientific temperament among children. 'We should ensure people remain curious about scientific developments and innovations. The curiosity will drive towards new inventions. The exhibition is a good attempt in this regard,' he stated. He also appreciated the participation of reputed institutions in the exhibition. Deputy Conservator of Forests, Shivamogga, G.R. Ajjaiah opined that the science exhibitions would help create interest in scientific innovations among young minds. Such events were essential for the nation to become a developed country by 2047. R.C. Jagadeesha, Vice-Chancellor of the university, and others were present. The university has invited schoolchildren to visit the exhibition. The organisers are expecting a turnout of over 5,000 students every day.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just powering smartphones, offices, or research labs—it is now finding its way into the fight against crime. The UK government has announced plans to develop an AI-driven crime prediction system that aims to forecast offences before they take place and give law enforcement the tools to intervene early. The ambitious project will use advanced data analytics and interactive mapping to create a real-time crime map across England and Wales. Unlike traditional crime maps, which simply log incidents after they occur, this system will attempt to highlight where crimes are most likely to happen in the future, allowing police officers to act proactively. According to the government's announcement, the AI map will focus on high-impact offences such as knife crime, violent assaults, theft, and anti-social behaviour. It will work by pooling data from multiple sources—including police records, social services, and local councils—to build predictive models based on past incidents, behavioural patterns of repeat offenders, and environmental factors. The goal is to identify 'hotspots' before situations escalate into serious threats. 'As part of our Plan for Change, we are investing in AI and other innovations that will help us be smarter on crime, staying ahead of the curve and prevent it from happening in the first place,' said Dame Diana Johnson, Minister for Policing and Crime Prevention, in the official statement. The project is part of the government's £500 million R&D Missions Accelerator Programme, with £4 million already committed for early development. Teams from universities, businesses, and technology partners are expected to deliver working prototypes by April 2026, with full deployment projected for 2030. This initiative builds upon previous Home Office strategies, including hotspot-mapping for knife crime and the Safer Streets Initiative, which targeted crime in urban centres. However, the new system promises a far more sophisticated and forward-looking approach by applying machine learning to anticipate risk in real time. Globally, the idea of predictive policing is not new—but results have been mixed. In the United States, several experiments, including those trialled in Los Angeles and Chicago, faced backlash for racial bias and poor accuracy, leading to their eventual discontinuation. One high-profile example, Geolitica (formerly known as PredPol), was abandoned in 2020 after failing to deliver reliable results. On the other hand, Europe has seen more encouraging outcomes. The Netherlands' Crime Anticipation System (CAS) has been credited with reducing burglary rates, while Danish police have leveraged AI tools to investigate fraud more effectively. The UK government hopes its new crime map will learn from past mistakes and deliver a system that is both accurate and ethical. If successful, it could become one of the most significant applications of AI in public safety, reshaping how law enforcement approaches crime prevention. By 2030, the country may be witnessing a new era of data-driven policing—one in which technology helps officers not only respond to crime but stop it before it begins.

With a 560 km range and 450-kg warhead, the SCALP-EG's stealth and low-altitude terrain-following enabled it to evade Pakistan's air defences and strike precisely India is fast-tracking its air power upgrades post-Operation Sindoor, with focus on both indigenous and foreign tech. While Rs 15,000 crore has been earmarked for the AMCA project to develop a homegrown 5th-gen fighter, work is also advancing on the Tejas multirole jet. The IAF now plans to arm the Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 variants with the SCALP-EG (Storm Shadow) long-range stealth cruise missile, known for its powerful precision strike capability. After showcasing its precision strike and stealth infiltration in Operation Sindoor, the IAF now plans to arm more fighter jets with the SCALP-EG missile, currently exclusive to the Rafale fleet. The move aims to boost the limited Rafale squadron's strike power and enhance India's deep-strike capabilities amid rising threats from Pakistan and China. The Power Of The SCALP-EG Missile During Operation Sindoor, the SCALP-EG missile launched from IAF's Rafale aircraft successfully targeted critical locations deep within Pakistan, including Jaish-e-Mohammed's headquarters in Bahawalpur, Noor Khan's command-and-control centre in Chaklala, and suspected nuclear storage sites in Kirana Hills. With a striking range of up to 560 kilometres and a 450-kg warhead, the missile's stealth design and low-altitude terrain-following capability allowed it to evade Pakistan's air defence and hit targets precisely. Satellite imagery from Indian startup KawaSpace and China's MizarVision confirmed the strike's success, showing a direct hit on the HVAC shaft of the Pakistan Air Force control centre and a hangar at Shahbaz (Jacobabad) airbase. Crucially, the missile also evaded Pakistan's Chinese-supplied HQ-9 surface-to-air system and Data Link 17 network. Tejas Faces Integration Hurdles The integration of the SCALP-EG missile with the Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 poses technical and logistical challenges. Discussions with European manufacturer MBDA are underway to ensure compatibility between the SCALP's navigation system, which combines inertial navigation, GPS, terrain-referenced guidance, and an imaging infrared seeker, and the avionics and weapon management systems of the Tejas aircraft. While Rafale's RBE2 AESA radar is already compatible, the EL/M-2052 AESA radar of Tejas Mk1A and the proposed Uttam AESA radar of Mk2 will require software upgrades and interface modifications. Why This Matters This initiative is crucial as it will significantly bolster the IAF's flexibility and strength in numbers. With only 36 Rafales in service, the planned fleet of 83 Tejas Mk1A and approximately 324 Tejas Mk2 will provide a substantial increase in operational capability, particularly in light of Pakistan deploying the Chinese J-20 stealth fighter and the HQ-9 missile defence system, and China's growing missile reserves in the Indo-Pacific region. The Road Ahead The limited number of Rafales contrasts with the potential high number of Tejas aircraft. Deploying advanced weapons like the SCALP on indigenous platforms will serve as a force multiplier, enabling lighter and relatively less expensive aircraft to undertake missions traditionally reserved for heavier fighters like Rafale or Sukhoi-30.
