'We have two 'blankets' now' Texas A&M CB Will Lee III speaks on transfer Julian Humphrey
The 2025 Texas A&M Maroon & White Spring game answered many early questions about the defensive side of the ball. The team made plays on all three levels, limited the big plays, and caused several turnovers while looking in midseason form.
At the end of last season, coach Mike Elko made headlines for being upset about his team's inability to stop pass plays during the bowl game against a depleted USC Trojan football team. He took full responsibility for not having his team ready to play and said he would get more involved in the defense. However, he didn't just talk about it; he attacked it head-on, hitting the transfer portal and adding to his staff.
The Aggies got a head start on shoring up the cornerback position when Will Lee announced that he was returning for his senior season, but that still left a void when it came to experienced players who had success at a high level. A&M veteran Tyreek Chappell spent most of his time on the injured reserve list, and the talented Dezz Ricks struggled down the stretch.
Coach Elko brought some competition to the position when he picked up transfers Jordan Shaw from Washington and Julian Humphrey from Georgia. After getting rave reviews during spring practice, they put in some solid work during the spring game. Will Lee spoke on the defensive backs after the game.
"Jordan Shaw specifically like he's a dog. That's really been like a person I always felt close with since he came in. He's an open guy you can talk to him all day every day about anything and on the field, he knows what he's doing he's playing fast"
"Julio he's making great plays out there on the field and he's going to keep balling. So we got two blankets now so we going to put it to work"
The defensive back room now has depth and talent that have been working hard. Will Lee has confidence that they will be back on track and much improved, easing coach Elko's concerns from the end of last season.

Two Ohio State players named to ESPN's 2025 preseason College Football All-American team
Like preseason polls, preseason All-America teams can be tricky. With input from pro scouts, college coaches and media colleagues, here's our 2025 team at ESPN. As we continue to march through fall camp and head towards the beginning of the college football season, we've seen plenty of Ohio State players receive preseason accolades and honors. The Buckeye program always has a few players mentioned among the best in the country because -- well -- it IS Ohio State after all. This week, two OSU players received another preseason honor when ESPN announced its preseason 2025 College Football All-American team. And while there are plenty of Ohio State players that could have been mentioned, and maybe just missed the cut, there are two that continue to appear on everyone's preseason list of best players as members of ESPN's first-team preseason All-American squad. On offense, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was honored with ESPN gushing about the star wide receiver and perhaps the best player in all the game. "Smith returns as college football's premier player and the one who strikes the most fear into opposing defensive coordinators' hearts," wrote Chris Low. "The 6-3, 225-pound sophomore is a nightmarish matchup for defensive backs with his blend of size, strength and speed. He had 17 touchdown catches last year, including four in the Buckeyes' first two playoff games, and averaged 17.5 yards per catch." On the defensive side, you can once again guess which OSU player was recognized on the first team, none other than all-everything safety Caleb Downs. "Downs came into college football as one of the top prospects in the country, played that way as a freshman at Alabama and took yet another step this past season after transferring to Ohio State and helping lead the Buckeyes to the national championship," Low said. "The prototypical safety, Downs was third on Ohio State's team last season with 81 tackles, 7 ½ of them for loss, and had two interceptions." It should be noted that there was also one other Ohio State player who was mentioned on ESPN's second-team, and that was tight end Max Klare. He, too, is expected to do big things and build off of what he did at Purdue. In other words, there is still plenty of talent in the cupboard on the banks of the Olentangy. Ohio State vs. Texas to set historic precedent on Aug. 30
When Ohio State and Texas do battle to open the college football season on Aug. 30, it will be an historic matchup. Not only will it be the first meeting between preseason No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Coaches Poll, but it will also mark another notable first-time event in history. With Texas being ranked No. 1 in both polls, and with the game being played inside Ohio Stadium, the oddsmakers -- at least for now -- have the Buckeyes as a favorite. In fact, ESPN itself has OSU as a - 2.5 point favorite over the Longhorns. And while that would hardly be the first time a No. 1 team was an underdog by Vegas standards, according to the "worldwide leader," it will be the first time in college football history that a No. 1-ranked preseason team has opened the season as an underdog. So, what is the closest a No. 1 team has come to not being favored in its season-opener? According to Doug Greenberg of ESPN, it was when No. 1 Florida State was a four-point favorite over No. 8 Miami (FL) and lost convincingly in the Orange Bowl, 31-0. The game between the Buckeyes and Longhorns is sure to be one of the most anticipated games of the college football season, and it's already generating a lot of buzz in not just Columbus and Austin, but across the country. Let's hope the home-field advantage OSU should get from playing in the 'Shoe is just what the scarlet and gray doctor ordered. Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches
Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. OSU begins the defense of its national championship on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Texas in the 'Shoe.
