Coimbatore district gets minibus services on 30 routes under new scheme
COIMBATORE/SALEM: Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Monday inaugurated minibus services on 30 routes under the new Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme, which is aimed at enhancing the accessibility of bus services in both urban and rural areas.
Inaugurating the service at the omnibus stand in Gandhipuram, the collector said there are 30 routes under the scheme now. They are 22 existing routes that have been expanded and eight new routes. He added that the initiative would be beneficial for rural residents and school students.
Eight minibuses will operate under the Mettupalayam regional transport office limits, four in Coimbatore North, fifteen in Coimbatore West, one in Coimbatore South and two in Pollachi region.
All 30 minibuses began operation on Monday morning.
The collector stated that a total of 116 permits were issued under the scheme, including 67 permits for new routes that previously had no bus connectivity.
Salem district gets 111 new services
Tourism minister R Rajendran launched the minibus service scheme in Salem district. "In total, 53 new minibus services and 58 route extended minibus services have been launched, amounting to 111 minibus services in the district," the minister said after inaugurating the scheme at Salem old bus stand.

This scheme will provide four new minibus services along with 18 extended minibus services to the Salem West Circle in Salem district, while 11 new minibus services and seven extended minibus services will be available for the Salem East circle. Likewise, there will be two new minibus services and five route extended services for Salem South, 10 new minibus services and six route extended minibus services for Sankari circle, 22 new minibus services and 10 extended routes for Attur circle and four new minibus services along with 12 extended routes for Mettur circle.
Minister Rajendran handed over compassionate appointment orders to five heirs of people who passed away while serving in the co-operatives department.

South Delhi India's capital for FMCG consumption
Representative image (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: When it comes to quantity (volume), South Delhi, associated with affluence, is India's unrivalled consumption capital for fast-moving consumer goods. But West Delhi is the top spender on these goods, not only in the capital, but also in the country. What's common: both prefer good old home-cooked meals, and bottled cold drinks. A household in the West Delhi cluster - Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri, Sagarpur, and Vikaspuri - spends Rs 39,325 a year on average, which is more than twice the national average, show figures compiled by data and consulting firm Kantar's FMCG Pulse. On the other hand, a household in South Delhi - Okhla, Kalkaji, Lajpat Nagar, and Bhogal - consumes 240kg of FMCG annually, again, two times the average national consumption. Bengaluru tops in premium products When it comes to premium products, it is Bengaluru which comes out on top with an average city-level spend of Rs 211 for every kilo of FMCG, surpassing all other cities, none of which exceed Rs 195 per kg. An average Mumbai household makes 135 visits. Each visit in the GDSC corridor involves a spend of only Rs 93 and a purchase of just 541g, the lowest among metro clusters. Only two other metro clusters, Surat and Kolkata, average less than Rs 100 per visit. The lower average spend may be linked to the small size of dwelling units. The insights, which study the consumption pattern of metros, breaking them down into 157 micro-clusters, have excluded a regionally skewed category of atta. Among Delhi clusters, the South Delhi cluster purchases the least quantity of snacking products, but consumes 45 litres of edible oil annually, slightly above the city average, and 17kg of salt per annum, approximately 1.4x the city-level average. Additionally, this cluster is a heavy consumer of basmati rice, twice the city-level average. Its low interest in snacking, paired with high consumption of staples, suggests a preference for home-cooked meals. However, its consumption of 20 litres of bottled soft drinks annually, 1.3 times the city average, suggests that it may be driven more by taste than health concerns, according to Kantar. In contrast, the West Delhi cluster is a major market for salty snacks, with households spending approximately Rs 1,700 annually on these products, 1.3 times the city average. Further, significant spending on spices and basmati rice suggests that, like the South Delhi cluster, West Delhi households prefer home-cooked meals. Additionally, a two-fold expenditure on sauces and ketchups, and a 1.9-times spend compared to the city average on bottled soft drinks, highlight the cluster's focus on flavoured and food-centric lifestyles. "Delhi has always stood out for its preference for larger pack sizes across FMCG categories, a clear reflection of the city's higher consumer affluence and evolved buying behaviour," said Dabur India's head of sales, Rehan Hasan. 37 years on, families of 1988 crash victims await ‘fair compensation'
1 2 3 Ahmedabad: The AI 171 plane crash, among the deadliest aviation disasters in the country, has brought renewed attention to the unresolved struggles of families affected by the 1988 Ahmedabad air tragedy. The Indian Airlines flight 113 from Bombay to Ahmedabad crashed on Oct 19, 1988, killing 133 passengers and crew of the 135 on board the aircraft. The families of the deceased were then offered Rs 2 lakh in compensation. Today, nearly 37 years since the tragedy, around 20 families from Ahmedabad remain locked in a legal battle with authorities over what they consider inadequate compensation for their losses. "We are around 20 families that are still fighting a legal battle for fair compensation. After the tragedy, the authorities had announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh per victim. We believe the compensation should be based on the income and age of the victims. So, after HC order, we moved the Supreme Court in April 2010 for higher compensation," said Pankesh Patel, secretary of the association formed by families. However, the 20 families, organized under the Air Crash Claimants' Association, moved the Supreme Court in 2010, demanding a higher compensation based on the age and earning potential of their deceased relatives. Ushaben Patel, now 74, had lost her husband Sharad Patel, a chartered accountant and company secretary who served as finance director for a German company. Thursday's plane crash has reopened old wounds for her. "At the time of the 1988 crash, my sons Jaysheel and Milan were in Class 5 and Class 3 respectively. I raised them both with support from our families and they are both chartered accountants now, settled in Canada," she said. "The compensation offered in the aftermath of the AI 171 tragedy is better than what we were offered," she added. Reetaben Shah, 74, remembers her husband Sunil Shah, an IIM-A graduate who worked as a management consultant. Their daughter was just 12 years old when the crash occurred. "We did not accept the Rs 2 lakh compensation and initiated legal action. We finally moved the Supreme Court," she said. Ketan Patel, now 63, lost his father Ranjitbhai Patel, a 48-year-old chartered accountant, to the tragedy. "We had demanded compensation based on his age and income, which was around Rs 1.25 lakh per annum at that time. It has been 37 years since the legal battle began and we are still awaiting justice," he said. The families have created a lasting memorial at the Kotarpur crash site. "We installed a marble replica of an aircraft at the site," Ushaben Patel said. "Many families visit the site on Oct 19 every year to pay tribute to their loved ones." Working with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the families also set up the Shantivan, a memorial garden featuring 133 trees in remembrance of 133 people who lost their lives in the crash.
