5,644 development projects completed in Omalur panchayat union: Minister

Tourism minister R Rajendran and others SALEM: As many as 5,644 development projects have been completed in the Omalur panchayat union in Salem district during the present DMK rule, said tourism minister R Rajendran on Monday. He said chief minister M K Stalin has allocated Rs 344 crore for the Omalur panchayat union in the last four years. The minister was speaking after launching construction of a new building for the Omalur panchayat union office. The building is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5.90 crore. He said Stalin was announcing and executing various initiatives for the advancement and welfare of the community. Funds were allocated for several initiatives in the panchayat union. They included construction of new office buildings and roads and provision of water supply connections in rural regions. Work on sewerage canals was also under way, he said. He said 18 projects worth Rs 6.78 crore were executed under the Rural Roads Development Scheme. Various initiatives worth Rs 248 crore have been undertaken under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. A total of 88 infrastructure projects worth Rs 235 crore have been completed under the School Infrastructure Development Scheme, and 397 projects worth Rs 11.42 crore are also being implemented in the Omalur panchayat union. The minister said primary health centre projects have been initiated at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore in Mullichettipatty, Tholasampatty panchayat and Thumbipadi panchayat. District collector R Brindha Devi, Salem West MLA R Arul, additional collector N Ponmani and others were present.

Mettur dam SALEM: Chief minister M K Stalin would release water from Mettur dam on June 12 for irrigation in the Cauvery delta districts, tourism minister R Rajendran said on Monday. During his two-day visit to Salem district on June 11 and 12, the chief minister will inaugurate projects worth around Rs 1,400 crore. The CM would participate in govt and party events in the district. After releasing water from the Mettur dam on June 12, Stalin will attend an event on the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College campus in Salem where he will provide welfare schemes that would benefit around one lakh people. Preparations are currently under way to erect a pavilion spanning approximately 180,000 square feet on the college ground for the event. The tourism minister inspected work on the pavilion and held discussions with officials regarding security measures and facilities. The minister was accompanied by district collector R Brindha Devi, Salem corporation commissioner M Elangovan, deputy police commissioner Velmurugan and DMK Salem East district secretary S R Sivalingam.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalim issues 3 lakh each to kin of Salem firecracker explosion victims

Salem: Following the death of four people in a firecracker explosion during a temple festival procession at Kanjanayakkanpatti near Omalur here on Friday night, chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families and announced a solatium of Rs3 lakh each for the kin of the deceased. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Later in the day, tourism minister R Rajendran, who inspected the accident site along with district collector R Brindha Devi, handed over cheques for Rs3 lakh to the families of the victims. The minister also handed over another Rs2 lakh each in cash, which was announced by the DMK, to the kin of the deceased. The incident took place around 9pm on Friday in Kanjanayakkanpatti village, where the Draupathi Amman Temple festival was being celebrated after a gap of 27 years. According to a police officer, a sky shot firecracker that was set off before the procession fell and landed in a sack full of firecrackers, triggering a massive explosion. T Selvaraj, 29, of Kottamedu in Kanjanayakkanpatti, and S Karthikeyan, 12, and Tamilselvan, 11, both residents of Kuruvaliyur, died on the spot. Lokesh, 20, of Kottamedu, was admitted to the Salem Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital with severe injuries. He later died in the hospital without responding to treatment. Bodies of the deceased were handed over to their family members after the autopsy on Saturday. Based on a complaint lodged by the Dharapuram village administrative officer, the Theevattipatti police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
