RAF Lakenheath planespotters gather as F-22 fighter jets arrive
RAF Lakenheath hosts the USAF's 48th Fighter Wing and is the largest US fighter operation in Europe.The wing employs four combat-ready fighter squadrons of F-15 Strike Eagles and F-35A Lighting II aircraft.Planespotters at RAF Lakenheath reported an increase in activity over the past few days with the F-22 jets' arrival as well as 16 F-35As leaving on Monday. They expressed excitement at being able to see the aircraft but also concern at the reasons for their appearance.
John Millard travelled to the viewing area to get a look for himself and said it was often "jam packed" when news of incoming jets breaks."It's one of their stealth fighter bombers and of course in coming here there's been a lot of interest," he said of the F-22 jets."Here at Lakenheath they've got the F-15s and F-35s so it's unusual for another fighter bomber to actually arrive."The base is currently closed due to a United States holiday and the jets were expected to be leaving again in the next few days."Unfortunately we don't know which runway they'll be using, it all depends on the wind," Mr Millard continued."But yes, I'll come along."
Mick Coppin travelled from Lincolnshire to the base to watch the activity."It's quite exciting for me today hearing that news - we now hope to see some F-22 Raptors because they're awesome planes," he said."We don't know the reason there here... but just to see one would be spectacular."It's the sheer power and you don't see them outside the USA, to see them here would be wonderful."Mr Coppin believed the arrival of the F-22s "should concern us all", but he added there was "nothing we can do about it".
Steve Huntley came up from Essex and got to the viewing point early."I've been going to many airshows over the years and never seen one and the fact that 12 (F-22s) arrived here last night is really something," he said."It's a very rare sight."Mr Huntley did not believe it was something to be worried about."I think it's more of a deterrent," he added."They're the best fighter aircraft in the world... they're an amazing aircraft and for an enthusiast it's like Christmas."
Tanker aircrafts have also been spotted arriving at nearby RAF Mildenhall.The 352nd Special Operations Wing, based at the site, performs specialised operations and uses advanced aircraft, tactics and air fuelling techniques to transport and resupply military forces. An United States official told the BBC: "Due to operational security, we cannot provide details about the deployment of aircraft, personnel, or capabilities."

Post-Brexit chaos as EU citizens living in Britain wrongly barred from UK
EU citizens waiting for the government to decide their pre- Brexit residency status have been wrongly refused entry to the UK, forcing them to give up their lives here. The Independent Monitoring Authority for Citizens' Rights Agreements (IMA) has expressed 'serious concerns' after some who left to go on holiday or visit family were barred from entering Britain on their return. Among those affected was a 34-year-old Spanish woman who was removed from the UK despite showing Home Office documents which proved her right to live and work in the UK. She had flown to Spain to see her sister and her new baby at Christmas, The Guardian reported. Another EU citizen, Greek Cypriot Costa Koushiappis, was forcibly removed after taking a short trip to Amsterdam in November, the paper said. The IMA has now written to the Home Office, warning that those waiting for a decision on their residency should not be removed if they make short trips overseas, including for business or leisure. It advised that those who hold a valid 'certificate of application' (CoA) from the Home Office can use it with Border Force officials at airports or ports to show they are allowed to travel. Miranda Biddle, chief executive of the IMA, said: 'Our position is that a citizen with a valid certificate of application has a right to exit and enter the UK while waiting for a decision on their EU settlement scheme application, subject to providing additional documentation required at the border.' She said she was 'keen to continue to work with the government' to 'ensure citizens are not discouraged from exercising their rights'. The group has called on the Home Office to clarify the CoA rules before a new system requiring visitors to the UK to have an 'electronic travel authorisations' is enforced. Campaign group the3million said it was 'very disappointed' that the IMA had agreed with the Border Force approach of asking EU citizens to carry documents to prove their residence before Brexit took effect on 31 December 2020. A CoA was sufficient proof of rights until such time as a final decision is taken, the group said. A Home Office spokesperson said: 'All individuals with a certificate of application are made aware that they may be asked for evidence to show that they qualify under the scheme before they are allowed entry to the UK. Equivalent guidance has been issued to Border Force officers and published online.'

Essex teacher pauses east to west wheelchair challenge
A wheelchair user with multiple sclerosis (MS) who embarked on a coast to coast challenge is "devastated" to have paused the journey 53 miles (85km) from the finish. Ben Parker, 49, from Saffron Walden in Essex, was diagnosed with MS in 2009 and started using a wheelchair in 2023 when he struggled to use his legs. However, before getting to the finish line of the challenge which would see him go from Ness Point in Lowestoft, Suffolk, to Land's End in Cornwall, he said his body and mind "gave up" leading him to pause the challenge, which he hoped to resume in October."When it came to that very last day I was struggling to push myself downhill - there was nothing left," he said. Mr Parker wanted to "flippantly" take on the challenge and go east to west across England instead of going from the top to the bottom of the UK, or vice is a condition where the immune system attacks cells in the brain and spinal cord, affecting how people move, think and said: "They call these things a challenge and there's a reason for that. If it was simple we would all be doing it."Mr Parker had spent 14 days pushing himself in his wheelchair covering between 31 miles (50km) and 47 miles (75km) per day. "It broke my heart. On Sunday I was absolutely devastated... I'm still not at the point of being proud of what I've done just yet because I didn't finish, yet." However, he said there had been numerous factors including his MS symptoms and fatigue which led to him pausing the challenge. "I am quite impressed with what I've been doing... it's not been finished yet, and I do emphasise the yet, because it will get finished," he said."I don't want to let anybody down with this." Across 14 days he faced a variety of weather conditions and has raised almost £6,000 for charities Andy's Man Club and No Child Without. "I went through storms in Cornwall, the heat at the beginning was quite something," he said."It was tough going but I cannot emphasise how amazing the people have been on the whole route."I did get pulled over by the police at one point... I've never been done for going too slow." Mr Parker, who teaches maths in Harlow, said he was ready to get back into training and hoped to be back out on the road to complete the challenge in the next school holiday at the end of October.
