New ‘Visit Luther' sign dedicated along Route 66
LUTHER, Okla. (KFOR) – If you're driving along Route 66 in Luther, you'll see a new flashy sign. It was paid for with dollars from the Oklahoma Rt. 66 Project Grant, ahead of the 'Mother Road's' centennial next year.
The new sign has two arrows. One points towards the Couch Pecan Orchard, which donated the land. The other points towards downtown Luther, where they're hoping you'll exit for a visit.

'3… 2… 1…' Cheered the crowd as the new Visit Luther sign along Route 66 was turned on.
The dedication ceremony was a retro blast from the past with classic cars and a barbershop quartet singing 'Oklahoma!' and 'Get your kicks on Rt. 66.'
The artist, Cameron Eagle, grew up along the mother road.
'I can't seem to get away from route 66. So I'm getting my kicks,' said Eagle.
He's always admired the style, so the design only took him about a day and a half.
'It's like a musician. You already know the notes in your head. You go in the studio and it just came out,' said Eagle.
The $70,000 sign was paid for by the Oklahoma Rt. 66 Project Grant ahead of its centennial next year. The grant awards millions of dollars to communities along the stretch of road over the next two years.
'It's helping people stop in those towns, spend the money, and creating sales tax, which is just so valuable. We live or die on sales tax,' said Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell.
Pinnell said Oklahoma has the most drivable Rt. 66 miles in the country.
'To take that money and put it back in rural Oklahoma, for projects like this, is incredible,' said Sen. Grant Green R-Wellston.
Those funds will also go towards restoring and preserving other attractions in Luther, like the Threatt Filling Station, a historically black-owned property, and the Tillman Cemetery, believed to be the only Black cemetery along Route 66 and the final resting place of former slaves.

The sign will be a beacon to direct folks to downtown Luther.
'Those travelers along the mother road can stop and enjoy our town with us,' said Mayor Terry Arps.
Eagle said the sign takes on a different light at night. It's equipped with durable LEDs, instead of neon, and the letters themselves illuminate.
'At the golden hour, right at dusk, you'll see the twinkly lights, you'll see the neon banding and see that big Luther lit up. 'Visit Luther Oklahoma,'' said Eagle.
The artist also included an homage to his mother. The base of the sign, with the hollowed-out circles, was actually the front-porch poll from his mother's house.

Most rental car companies typically avoid renting out their cars to people under 25, but will make an exception if the price is right. These companies will add-on extra fees to make the exception worth their while and ensure they're protected. So what happens when a young adult skips out on extra insurance on her rental and ends up in a hailstorm? That's what one renter experienced first-hand. She's unhappy about the charges, even though she opted out of extra coverage. In a TikTok with more than 885,600 views, Faith ( @faithmariespillers ) shares how Enterprise is trying to charge her $10,000 after a hailstorm occurred, damaging her rental car. So What Happened With Enterprise Rental? In her TikTok, Faith shares that she was traveling to Oklahoma for a graduation and is under 25 years old. Enterprise charged Faith the typical rental rate and additionally a 'young renters fee,' which she claimed to be $340 for three days. According to Enterprise , the 'young renters fee' starts out at $25 a day but will vary based on demand and location. After agreeing to the young renter's fee, Faith was asked if she wanted to add extra protection to her reservation. She declined after seeing it would cost $40-50 additional each day. 'I was already paying the regular fee, young renter's fee, and I'm not about to add another $40-$50 a day on top of that,' she states. Famous last words. During her trip, a hailstorm swept through Oklahoma and ended up causing hail damage on the vehicle. Once she returned the car, she was charged her deductible of $1,000, and the paperwork began. Both parties began working on the claim and submitted photos and video evidence. After reviewing the damage, Enterprise allegedly sent Faith an invoice for $10,000 in damages. Faith was in disbelief seeing the tab and questioned why she was being charged that much money. 'Mind-blowing and heartbreaking. Looking back I should've just laid out on the car during the storm,' Faith vents. 'What's crazy is the hail would've damaged the car in their parking lot anyway. So sorry girl,' one TikTok commenter shared. She then advises any young car renters to always get the extra protection in case of any natural disaster or severe weather. What did Enterprise Dave to Say About This Situation? An Enterprise representative told Motor1 about the incident: 'It's important to us to resolve any unsatisfactory situations, and we take seriously any concerns brought to us by customers and investigate them thoroughly. "Sometimes customers mistakenly believe if they didn't personally cause or witness any damage [for example, a 'hit-and-run' incident in a parking lot, flooding or hail damage] that they are not responsible. This is one of the most common misconceptions about rental vehicle damage. In fact, customers are financially responsible for damage that occurs during a rental transaction, regardless of fault or negligence, just as if they owned the rental vehicle themselves. This is stated in our rental contract. Enterprise offers additional optional coverage products that could release the renter from liability in most cases. "We are always striving to make each renter's experience the best it can be and help customers better understand what they can do to alleviate the risk on their end.' What Can Be Done to Avoid This Enterprise Situation? Generally speaking, it's always safe to purchase extra protection coverage when renting a car. However, not everyone does this due to the extra cost associated. So what can you do if damage is done while renting a car and you opted out of this extra coverage? First, check with your auto insurance. Most auto insurance providers will consider your rental vehicle part of your plan, depending on your coverage. Insurance companies are well-equipped to go into battle to fight for your case. 'Your insurance will cover it and make sure you tell your insurance you paid your deductible so they don't deduct that from the pay out to the rental car company,' TikTok commenter added. Second, check with your credit card company. Some credit cards will provide auto rental insurance as an added perk. Popular credit cards with this feature include Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture X, and American Express, according to NerdWallet . What Did the Viewers Think About This? 'Go through your car insurance, also I'd fight them on this 1000% but next time please buy the protection,' one suggested. 'Previous Enterprise employee here, do NOT add the insurance protection—that's literally how they make their money,' one shared. 'PSA from a fellow military spouse, the young renter fee is waived for military members and extended to spouses! I started renting cars at 19 and have never paid the fee!' one revealed. 'You rented a car and didn't get insurance, it has nothing to do with age,' one added. This TikTok has more than 34,500 likes. 'Missed My Bonus By One': Dodge Salesman Says May Was Terrible For Sales. Here's Why
So much for Memorial Day sales. Memorial Day weekend is usually one of the best times of the year to buy a car, as dealerships are eager to move older inventory to make room for fall's new models. But despite big banners and flashy promos, this year was a flop, according to a car salesperson who had an unexpectedly bad sales month. Are tariffs to blame, or is something else scaring off potential buyers? Dodge Salesman Vents About Bad Month In a trending video, Dodge salesman Dalton Stacey (@daltonstaceycars97), who's based in Oklahoma, shared what it's really like to sell cars in this market. Surprise, surprise, it's not pretty. Stacey explained that despite his employer giving the team an extra day to wrap up deals (instead of the cutoff being on Sunday, when customers might still be wavering on a decision), he made way fewer sales than he expected. 'I had so many people back out on me,' Stacey explained. 'It ain't even funny.' Because of all of the reneges, Stacey missed his bonus. What really hurts is that he was just one car shy of making the cutoff. 'Today sucked. May sucked. June better come correct,' Stacey said in the caption, clearly frustrated by the situation. Some people might hear this and think Stacey is making too big a deal about missing a bonus. But most people in the United States live paycheck to paycheck, and if you're relying on that extra income to cover your expenses, not getting it (especially by such a small margin) stings. Why Did People Back Out? Stacey doesn't explicitly state why his customers backed out, but we've got some context that'll help put things in perspective. Cars are getting more expensive—are tariffs to blame? Short answer: yes and no. In April, the average price of a new car jumped by a rare 2.5% to just under $49,000—a sharp rise for just a month's turnaround, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reported . Even used car pricing increased. KBB described it as 'likely the first, softest wave of a storm.' Why? Tariff-related sticker shock is only a few months or just a few weeks away, depending on the brand. Right now, dealers are trying to get rid of their pre-tariff inventory. But when tariffs hit, vehicles could have up to a 25-percent markup baked in. (That 2.5 percent doesn't look so bad now.) The other factor affecting affordability is loans. Most people don't have the cash on hand to buy a car outright, so they rely on loans. But a good loan (meaning one with a low interest rate) is getting harder to qualify for. So even if you cop a deal, the loan may be what screws you over. No wonder so many people were sending Stacey the 'Actually, I need to think about it' texts. What to Do If You're Thinking About Buying a Car It depends on your situation, but here's a good place to start: If you're ready to buy soon: Shop around now while there's still pre-tariff inventory available, and take advantage of the slow market to negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. If you're using a car loan: Shop around for loan rates and consider getting pre-approved through a credit union or your bank. If you're on the fence: If your vehicle is running fine, then waiting things out could help you avoid peak tariff prices. But have a backup plan, like a budget, in case your car ends up needing a major repair. If you're selling or trading in: You're in a good position here since used inventory is tight. Get multiple quotes and don't forget online retailers like Carvana and CarMax, which may offer you a better price.
