Kolkata: Around two years after a 33-year-old woman from Behala, Nabaruna Karmakar, was killed in a gunshot incident in the US, her husband, Michael Aaron Matthews (40), pleaded guilty in court.
He was sentenced to imprisonment for 13 to 16 years by Raleigh Seat of Court, Wake County, state of North Carolina on May 19. The woman's father Tapan Karmakar, who fought the legal battle for around two years along with his wife Sipra, said he had full respect for the court's verdict.
"He (Matthews) deserves either death penalty or life imprisonment. For his confession, the court gave him lesser punishment. We have full respect for the court's sentence.
Now, we want him to live to regret killing my younger daughter. After walking out of prison, he will have to face society, and that will be his real punishment," the father told TOI over the phone from the US. He had been staying with his elder daughter in Michigan during the proceedings of the case.
He is set to return to his Behala home in July. The woman, who worked in research and development for SAS, died from two gunshot wounds to her chest and torso at the couple's house on Seagrave Palace in Morrisville on April 14, 2023.
The couple got married in 2019.
Cops said Matthews called the emergency number 911 to report a double suicide. Following the call, cops rushed to the house and found the victim lying dead under a desk. They also recovered a suicide note mentioning that the woman was depressed over the dog's death. Her arm was found wrapped around a container holding her dog's ashes.
But theprosecutors stated in court that the scene was "staged" and Matthews had written the suicide note. Nabaruna had earned a PhD in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. Her colleagues started an online fundraising campaign against gun violence after the incident. Her parents were at the forefront of the campaign.

New CCTV clip shows Raja & Sonam at hotel
Indore: A 14-minute-long CCTV footage has emerged of Indore couple Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, raising the hope of finding some clues to solve the mystery of who killed him and where is the missing bride. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The footage shows the honeymooners depositing their bags in a hotel before going towards Double Decker Bridge on May 21. Both of them are in raincoats. The couple is seen arriving at 12:42pm on the same two-wheeler that was later found abandoned. Sonam is in a white T-shirt and black trousers under a black-and-pink raincoat. A white shirt was found next to Raja's body and a similar raincoat a few days later in the vicinity though neither has been confirmed to be hers. Raja is seen requesting the manager to allow them to leave their luggage at the hotel while they go to visit Double-Decker Bridge. Sonam puts her raincoat in the boot of the two-wheeler. They transfer a few clothes from their suitcases into a carry bagand head off. They look cheerful and carefree. At 12:45pm, a red hatchback arrives and stops at a short distance. Two minutes later, two men step out of the car and enter the hotel. One of them is seen making entries on the computer, while the other makes a phone call. At 12:56 the couple leave on their two wheeler. Sonam's family members don't think the raincoat found by police is hers. "It's 3XL and it is not clear if she was wearing the same raincoat," said Govind, who has been camping in Shillong. Police are examining the footage but the two families feel Meghalaya cops aren't doing enough to find Sonam or trace Raja's killers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Govind said: "We were the ones who found this viral CCTV footage. If a common man can do this, why can't police?" He had earlier said that Meghalaya police should "stop looking for a body". "My sister was abducted. We fear she has been trafficked to Bangladesh," he had told TOI. Meghalaya officials say police, SDERF and NDRF teams, have been braving treacherous terrain and harsh weather in their search for Sonam. "Police don't take us to witness the search operation. I am going on my own. They are just completing formalities in the name of searching. For the past three days, they have been searching just 50 metres on either side of a 10km road," he said. "If the body were to be found on a road like that, wouldn't it have come to light in 16 days? Even a five-year-old can understand that. Sohra police are just killing time so that our patience breaks, we leave, and the news stops coming in the media," Govind told TOI. According to local media reports in Meghalaya, a guide in Sohra has told police that he saw Raja and Sonam with three men before the couple went missing. They were talking in Hindi and seemed friendly, the reports said.

Odisha woman rescued after being sold for Rs 1L in Chhindwara; 5 held
Bhopal: A 50-year-old woman from Odisha, trafficked and sold for Rs 1 lakh to work as a domestic helper in Madhya Pradesh, was rescued by police from a village in Chhindwara district earlier this week. Police said the woman was rescued on June 3 and was kept at the one-stop centre. However, due to the language barrier, as she only spoke Odia, it was only after her kin arrived and narrated the ordeal she underwent that a case was registered against the five accused, and all of them were arrested. Those arrested are two Odisha residents who were sellers, one man from Narsinghpur district who acted as a middleman, and two accused from Chhindwara who were buyers. The incident took place at Guraiya village under Singori police outpost of the district. The accused have been identified as Kandarp Nayak, 32, Nandini Nayak, 48, both residents of Odisha, Rakesh Shukla, 36, a resident of Narsinghpur, Chhidami Malviya, 55, and Neeraj Malviya, 28, both residents of Guraiya village in Chhindwara. As per the woman, she went to Devgarh on March 26 for treatment. There, accused Kandarp Nayak and Nandini Nayak approached her and offered her a job with better wages in Madhya Pradesh. They brought her to Narsinghpur district, where, with the help of accused Rakesh Shukla, they sold the woman to Chhidami and Neeraj Malviya, both father and son, in Chhindwara for Rs 1 lakh. "The woman was unaware all the time. After a month, when she sought wages, she was told by the accused that they bought her. They brought her for domestic and other work. She faced difficulty in escaping too, as she was kept under guard and did not understand the local language. "It was on June 3 that she managed to escape in the night and walked for the entire night before reaching a village. The villagers there informed us. We rescued her and kept her at the one-stop centre. As she could only speak Odia, we contacted her kin, who came there and then talked to her. To them, she narrated her ordeal, and based on it, a case was registered, and all five accused were arrested," Singori police outpost in-charge Pankaj Rai told TOI.

Man kills teen on Eid to ‘avenge son'
Roorkee: Eid celebrations turned into mourning for a family in Manglaur area near Roorkee after their 17-year-old son was brutally murdered by their 40-year-old neighbour on Saturday morning. The accused, a daily wager from Pathanpura locality, slit the boy's throat when the victim was returning home after offering prayers "to settle a personal score", police said on Saturday. Officials said that Riyasat Ahmed's son and the victim, Sahil Ahmed Malik, were friends and both studied in Class 9. On last year's Eid, they went to bathe in the Gangnahar canal when the accused's son was swept away by strong current. His body was recovered three days later from a nearby barrage. Since then, Riyasat believed that Sahil had intentionally pushed his son into the canal, causing his death. "The accused told us he deliberately chose the festive day to carry out the crime as his own son was killed by Sahil on the same day last year. We are probing the case from every possible angle," said SP (Rural) SC Suyal.
