North Carolina murder: Justice for Kolkata parents after two years

1 2 Kolkata: Around two years after a 33-year-old woman from Behala, Nabaruna Karmakar, was killed in a gunshot incident in the US, her husband, Michael Aaron Matthews (40), pleaded guilty in court. He was sentenced to imprisonment for 13 to 16 years by Raleigh Seat of Court, Wake County, state of North Carolina on May 19. The woman's father Tapan Karmakar, who fought the legal battle for around two years along with his wife Sipra, said he had full respect for the court's verdict. "He (Matthews) deserves either death penalty or life imprisonment. For his confession, the court gave him lesser punishment. We have full respect for the court's sentence. Now, we want him to live to regret killing my younger daughter. After walking out of prison, he will have to face society, and that will be his real punishment," the father told TOI over the phone from the US. He had been staying with his elder daughter in Michigan during the proceedings of the case. He is set to return to his Behala home in July. The woman, who worked in research and development for SAS, died from two gunshot wounds to her chest and torso at the couple's house on Seagrave Palace in Morrisville on April 14, 2023. The couple got married in 2019. Cops said Matthews called the emergency number 911 to report a double suicide. Following the call, cops rushed to the house and found the victim lying dead under a desk. They also recovered a suicide note mentioning that the woman was depressed over the dog's death. Her arm was found wrapped around a container holding her dog's ashes. But theprosecutors stated in court that the scene was "staged" and Matthews had written the suicide note. Nabaruna had earned a PhD in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. Her colleagues started an online fundraising campaign against gun violence after the incident.
