China may soon give death penalty for fentanyl traffickers, says Trump

India Today5 days ago
US President Donald Trump said that China might soon begin giving the death penalty to people who make and send fentanyl into the United States. Trump claimed that the US and China are working on a deal to take strict action against fentanyl traffickers."I have a very good relationship with President Xi of China, but I imposed a 20% tariff on China because of the fentanyl. And I call it a penalty. It's a penalty because China delivers much of the fentanyl. Some people would say all of it. They deliver it into Mexico and even into our own country," Trump said.President Trump just signed a bipartisan bill cracking down on fentanyl alongside Americans who shared heartbreaking stories about losing their children, and @FoxNews @CNN @MSNBC did not air the event. What could be more important than this? pic.twitter.com/6w1IVkVelD— Karoline Leavitt (@PressSec) July 16, 2025advertisementTrump said that the tariff is meant to make up for the damage caused by the drug. He added, "We have a 20 per cent (tariff), so they pay billions of dollars and billions of dollars in damages for what they've done. And I think we're going to work it out so that China is going to end up going from that to giving the death penalty to the people that create this fentanyl and send it into our country, whether it's through other countries or directly."
He also said he believed this kind of agreement should have been made years ago. "I believe that we would have had that deal a long time ago. I shook hands with them, and then we had a rigged election, and we had somebody else come in, and they didn't know anything about a deal for the death penalty," Trump said.Today, President Trump signed legislation to amend the Controlled Substances Act regarding the scheduling of fentanyl-related substances. This legislation cannot bring back our loved ones lost to fentanyl, but it will prevent countless deaths. pic.twitter.com/D3RIuVGKzO— The White House (@WhiteHouse) July 16, 2025He added, "The death penalty is going to be imposed on people from China who make fentanyl and send it into our country. I believe that's going to happen soon. But as of today, all fentanyl related substances will be banned forever, and those who traffic in these deadly poisons will be put behind bars for a very long period of time."TRUMP BLAMES BIDEN FOR 'WORST DRUG CRISIS IN HISTORY'Trump lashed out at former President Joe Biden and blamed him for the current fentanyl crisis in the US. According to Trump, Biden's open-border policy made the problem worse."Today, we strike a righteous blow to the drug dealers, narcotic traffickers, and criminal cartels... and we take a historic step toward justice for every family touched by the fentanyl scourge," Trump said.He added, "So, six months ago, we came into office and inherited the worst drug crisis in American history by far. They did nothing. For four long years, Joe Biden surrendered our borders to the most evil and vicious traffickers, networks, and everything else on the planet Earth, allowing foreign drug cartels to carve out a massive footprint."Trump said that the flow of illegal drugs and criminals through open borders has caused huge problems for law enforcement. "This open borders nightmare flooded our country with fentanyl and with people that shouldn't be here, some of the worst people on Earth," he said.He added, "Illicit drugs decimated American communities and left us with the largest law enforcement challenge in our country's history, and hopefully will always be the largest. I can't imagine anything being worse."- EndsWith inputs from Agencies Tune InMust Watch

Putin Dollar Shock For Trump After BRICS Declaration? Russia's Big De-Dollarisation Announcement Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov clarified that BRICS nations don't aim to replace the US dollar, but rather seek alternatives for mutual settlements to circumvent US sanctions. He stated BRICS intends to trade in national currencies, with Russia already conducting 90% of payments with partners in local denominations. This counters US President Trump's concerns and threats of tariffs on BRICS countries, who are also developing "BRICS Pay," a decentralized blockchain payment system for cross-border transactions. 42.2K views | 1 day ago

Trump Admin's Harvard funding freeze: Judge calls DOJ rationale ‘mind boggling'

A federal judge on Monday (July 21) raised serious concerns over the Trump administration's decision to withhold more than $2 billion in research funding from Harvard University, questioning whether the move violated constitutional protections. 'There are limits to what you can terminate, and why, and how,' said US District Judge Allison Burroughs during a hearing in Boston. 'It seems to be your idea that you can terminate a contract even if the basis for termination is a constitutional violation.' Judge Burroughs stopped short of issuing a formal ruling but signaled skepticism toward the government's rationale for the funding freeze. Lawyers for the Justice Department argued that Harvard failed to adequately address antisemitism on campus, especially following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. They said the university's inaction violated the Trump administration's policy aimed at combating antisemitism. 'Harvard should have read the fine print,' said DOJ attorney Michael Velchik, asserting the administration had the right to terminate grants when institutions fail to align with federal priorities. The funding freeze is part of a broader push by President Donald Trump to reshape higher education. His administration targeted Harvard for what it called political bias, resistance to diversity program cuts, and alleged tolerance of antisemitism. The government has also threatened Harvard's tax-exempt status and tried to stop international students from enrolling, according to court filings. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields issued a statement on Monday: 'We are confident that Harvard will eventually come around and support the President's vision, and through good-faith conversations and negotiations, a good deal is more than possible.' Harvard and a group of professors filed suit in April, challenging the legality and constitutionality of the funding freeze. Their lawyers asked the judge to resolve the matter without a full trial, seeking a summary judgment. They argue that the Trump administration retaliated against the university for refusing to cede control over academic governance and the free expression of students and faculty. Burroughs, who disclosed during the hearing that she is Jewish, criticised the government's justification for the cuts. 'In some ways you're justifying the conduct on protecting Jews and upholding American values, but on the other hand taking steps that are antithetical to those things,' she said. Burroughs said she has not yet made a decision on whether to release the frozen funds. The case could set a precedent for the extent to which federal funding can be used as leverage against academic institutions.

Banter turns bloody as history-sheeter kills ‘friend'

Vadodara: A bit of banter turned deadly for a 28-year-old man who was stabbed to death by a 'friend' in the Raopura area of the city early on Monday morning. According to investigators, the victim, Yash Thakur , who worked at a roadside eatery, had been hanging out with his friends Bhim Bahadur Soni and Mehul Mali. Thakur had met Soni and Mali near a mall in the Tarsali area. The trio got onto a two-wheeler and went to have tea. After a while, they decided to visit the tea stall run by Soni's brother near SSG Hospital. While riding to the old city, there was an argument between Soni and Thakur over some jokes. Thakur got off the two-wheeler and decided to return home on his own. He even phoned another friend to pick him up. Soni and Mali went back to him and insisted that he travel with them, saying they would drop him home. "Thakur agreed and got back onto the two-wheeler. The argument with Soni soon flared up again and Thakur abused him. An enraged Soni stopped the two-wheeler near the govt press next to Kothi Crossroads, drew a knife and stabbed Thakur in the chest," said H A Rathod, ACP (crime).
