The Girls in Green are in Istanbul today to face
Cork
on Tuesday.
And the side is at full strength as skipper
Ward told RTÉ: 'Katie's a pro. You never want anyone to not celebrate such a massive, massive win and important moment in her career.
'It was about her enjoying those celebrations but she's a professional, she's fit, she's ready . . . maybe a question mark on her calf at the moment.

'But she's said to me straight away, 'I'm ready, I want to play', so of course she's available for selection.
'Katie's Katie, you know what you're going to get. She's wholehearted, she gives you everything.'
McCabe will start at left-back against a
Turkey
team who
Ireland
beat 1-0 in Tallaght last February in Ward's first game in charge.
Ward has been keen to change Ireland's style from a dogged defensive side to a more creative force.

But she stressed that the team cannot lose what they were good at doing while adding more strings to their bow.
And Ward highlighted the threat of Campbell from long throws.

Ward said: 'We know that if we need goals we've got a Guinness world record holder and also Louise Quinn that we can turn to.

'We've got different qualities for different situations for sure.'
'That first game against Turkey, we've looked at it and whilst we had a lot of the ball, we didn't do enough with it. Since then we have. We've increased a lot of the numbers we wanted to. The team is starting to grow.'
But this evening's game will be difficult in the Istanbul heat as Ireland go for the victory they need to secure at least a top-two spot in the Nations League.
Top spot looks tricky as Slovenia are currently three points clear and face bottom side

PLAY-OFF PERMUTATIONS
Should Slovenia win that, their 4-0 triumph over Ireland in February will mean Ward's side will need to win 5-0 in Cork on Tuesday to match their points total and beat them on the head-to-head rule.
And that is crucial as winning the group not only earns automatic promotion to League A ahead of the 2027
qualifiers
, but a guaranteed play-off for the World Cup.
If Ireland
remain
in League B for the qualifiers, they would need to finish in the top three just to secure that same play-off that League A teams are guaranteed in advance.
But second place in this Nations League means another play-off in October and chance to make League A. Ward stressed that talk of a shootout with Slovenia is off the agenda for now as Ireland must beat Turkey first.

She added: 'Turkey are a good side and they know if they beat us and beat Greece they can finish second.
'Let's be really clear, this is a must-win game. We have to go and get three points.
'We have to make sure we're switched on, we're focused and we get the job done.'

If PSG's dominant win was predictable, nobody thought it would be this enjoyable to watch

AND SO QATAR finally has its European Cup, and it was sealed with the greatest Champions League final performance since Barcelona left Alex Ferguson dumbstruck 14 years ago. Paris Saint-Germain struck Gulf oil in that very same year, from which point it was possible to foresee how they would win the Champions League in precisely this style, with the biggest winning scoreline in competition history and a rout so all-encompassing that all of Europe have been put on notice. But what was much more difficult to predict is that it would all be so. . . enjoyable. Seriously, Gulf-backed supremacy was never meant to feel so good to watch in the moment. And, truly, the football was glorious. Vitinha's reverse pass for Desire Doué to carve out the opening goal; the swiftness of the counter-attack for the second; Ousmane Demebele's impudent backheel for the third; Luis Enrique's jubilant touchline run before Kvaratskhelia even struck for the fourth; Senny Mayulu's shocked, wild-eyed celebration of the fifth. It would be wrong of us not to point out that these heady flourishes are the end goal of the sportswashing project; these weird, conflicted feelings is everything working as intended. So as right and proper as it is to acknowledge the underpinning motivations of the success, as you watch Luis Enrique bouncing around in celebration with his players like a giddy uncle, it feels a little churlish to be talking about it too. It was impossible not to be moved, too, by the banner unfurled by the PSG fans in tribute to Enrique's late daughter. Advertisement Nor can it be denied that Enrique has used his ample tools to build a magnificent football team. This began when the club acknowledged the fault in their stars, and once they rid themselves of their sedentary trio of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, Enrique could build a hungry, hardworking team capable of executing his vision which would first discover and then fulfill its own awesome potential. Their ridding themselves of celebrity indulgence for the collective endeavour of locally-sourced youth is a seductive parable, and as ever with PSG, it's a tale not quite so romantic when you scratch beneath the surface. PSG's is still one of the most expensively-assembled squads in Europe: of their starting outfield players, only Fabian Ruiz cost less than €32 million. Seven of the 10 cost at least €40 million each. Inter Milan's Expendables just could not compete, as PSG swallowed them hole with their relentless pressing. Their hunger for work was evident from the kick-off, as PSG booted the ball directly out of play so everyone could get on with the business of working to get the ball back. Inter couldn't play their way through such ferocity, and so their best route up the pitch were larrups up to Marcus Thuram. Enrique exposed the flaws of Simone Inzaghi's 3-5-2 by telling his full-backs to use all of the space available to them, and it quickly paid dividends, as right-back Achraf Hakimi found himself unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box to tap in the opening goal. That goal was also a testament to the remarkable fluidity of Enrique's system. Enrique, like anyone incubated at Barcelona, is a loyal 4-3-3 man, but while he wants those positions filled, he doesn't mind who fills them. Hence the astonishing success of Ousmane Dembele at centre-forward: he has the license to pop up anywhere across the front line and often in deep midfield. Inter's brains were quickly scrambled by this movement. In the lead up to the first goal, centre-back Francesco Acerbi was befuddled by the fact he had nobody to mark, and so rushed madly out of position, which left space for Doué to be picked out by Vitinha and then square the ball for Hakimi. Inter had hoped to sit deep and spring forward on the counter attack, but that plan was in tatters after the hapless Federico DiMarco turned his back and deflected Doué's breakaway shot into the net for PSG's second. Forced to push up after the break, PSG picked off their high line with a breathtaking kind of brutality. After the third goal, Inter's final became a failed exercise in avoiding humiliation. At the end, PSG's joy was absolute as Inter's pain was brutal and unstinting. Inter at least had one straightforward emotion to endure. The rest of us watching on were left to fumble through all manner of competing feelings.

Teenager Doué stars as PSG win Champions League for first time

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN won the Champions League for the first time in their history as Luis Enrique's brilliant young side outclassed Inter Milan on Saturday in the most one-sided final ever as teenager Desire Doue scored twice in an astonishing 5-0 victory. Achraf Hakimi, playing against his former club, gave PSG an early lead and Doue went from provider to finisher as his deflected shot doubled their advantage in the 20th minute. Doue scored again just after the hour mark, ending any doubt about the outcome before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ran away to get the fourth and substitute Senny Mayulu made it five. Inter were simply no match for the French club, who recorded the biggest victory by any team in the final in the 70-year history of the European Cup and Champions League. The triumph for the Parisians comes after more than a decade of huge investment from their Qatari owners, and five years after they lost to Bayern Munich in their only previous final appearance. Already French league and cup double winners, they are remarkably just the second ever French winners of European football's biggest prize — Marseille were the first in 1993, when they beat AC Milan in a final also played in Munich. It is also a second Champions League for PSG coach Luis Enrique, who won with Lionel Messi's Barcelona a decade ago. This youthful PSG side is the best the competition has seen since — one that has been intelligently pieced together over the last two years and fully unleashed this season following the departure of Kylian Mbappe. Indeed, the star on the night was teenager Doue, who delivered a masterclass just before he turns 20 on Tuesday. For Inter, there was to be no first Champions League title since 2010 as they failed to add to their three previous triumphs in the competition. Simone Inzaghi's side have now got to the final twice in three seasons and lost both, and this defeat comes a week after they missed out on the Serie A title to Napoli. They end the campaign trophyless, and their ageing side will need to be rebuilt. Advertisement - Doue at the double - PSG gave their opponents no chance from the off on a sweaty night at the Allianz Arena, and they were ahead in the 12th minute. It was a glorious goal, Vitinha threading a pass to Doue who squared for Hakimi to finish into an empty net, before refusing to celebrate against his former club. It was also the earliest goal in a Champions League final since 2019, and recent history was already firmly against Inter. The last final in which both teams scored was in 2018, while the last team to concede the first goal but still win was Real Madrid in 2014. But soon Inter were further behind with a goal that came on a counterattack. Willian Pacho prevented Inter from winning a corner, his clearance falling to Kvaratskhelia, who released Ousmane Dembele. His pass found Doue, and the youngster who was preferred in the starting line-up to Bradley Barcola fired past Yann Sommer, via a deflection off Federico Dimarco. Inter only really came close to scoring in the first half when Marcus Thuram headed just wide at a corner, but things got worse after the break. The night for Inzaghi's side was summed up by defender Yann Bisseck, who came on for Benjamin Pavard early in the second half but limped off less than 10 minutes later. Their back line was at sixes and sevens as PSG made it 3-0 on 63 minutes, Dembele's flick releasing Vitinha before the little Portuguese playmaker set up Doue to beat Sommer at his near post. Doue came off shortly after to rapturous applause, but his teammates were far from done. Dembele sent Kvaratskhelia away to make it 4-0 in the 73rd minute, and the 19-year-old Mayulu then played a one-two with Barcola before lashing in the fifth on 86 minutes. That rounded off an incredible night, with PSG becoming the first team to score five goals in the final since Benfica in 1962. – © AFP 2025 Written by AFP and originally published on The 42 whose award-winning team produces original content that you won't find anywhere else: on GAA, League of Ireland, women's sport and boxing, as well as our game-changing rugby coverage, all with an Irish eye.
