Annual grades IX, X exams kick off today

Express Tribune07-04-2025
The Annual Exams for IX and X grades under the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) are set to begin today at 499 examination centres across Karachi.
BSEK Chairman Ghulam Hussain Soho provided details about the examinations and their arrangements on Sunday during a meeting at his office.
For the first time, the examination board has issued computerised online admit cards to all students, and the list of examination centres is available on the board's official website. A total of 375,000 students will take the exams, including those from science and general groups, both regular and private. The examination centres include both government and private schools, with 256 centres designated for male students and 243 for female students.
BSEK has established 19 Hub Examination Centres across 18 towns in Karachi for the IX and X-grade exams. These centres will be responsible for receiving and distributing exam papers. To maintain the integrity of the exams, strict instructions have been issued, prohibiting students from bringing mobile devices or any unauthorised materials to the exam centres.
Any such items found will be confiscated, and students are warned against attempting to cheat. The board has also requested the imposition of Section 144 around exam centres, restricting external interference and requiring nearby photocopying shops to close during the exams.
To oversee the exams, the board has established a reporting cell at its office to monitor and prevent cheating. An effective paper delivery system has been put in place, where board officials will deliver sealed exam papers to Hub Centres, which will then be collected by centre superintendents or their representatives.
Vigilance officers will be present at each exam centre 30 minutes before the exam starts and will remain there throughout to prevent cheating. They will submit daily reports to the reporting cell at the board office, ensuring that any issues are promptly addressed. With 375,000 students participating, the exams will take place across 499 centres, with 256 designated for boys and 243 for girls.
The Chairman revealed that vigilance officers will sign the sealed envelopes in their presence to ensure the integrity of the exams. This measure is part of a collective effort by the government, district administration, and the board to prevent cheating, in line with the directives of the Sindh government.
To facilitate a smooth exam experience, the board has also requested K-Electric to avoid load shedding during the exams, ensuring that students can take their exams in a conducive environment.
The meeting was attended by BSEK Secretary Dr Naveed Ahmed, Examination Controller Zaheeuddin Bhutto, and other officials.

Major cities under strict security as Muharram 9 processions continue

Listen to article Major cities across the country, including Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar, are observing Muharram 9th processions on Saturday under heightened security, with mobile phone services suspended in some areas and key locations sealed amid fears of unrest. Authorities in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar deployed tens of thousands of police personnel, sealed sensitive areas, and partially suspended mobile phone services in efforts to prevent any untoward incidents. In Karachi, the main Muharram 9th procession will begin at 1:00 p.m. from Nishtar Park. Prior to the procession, a majlis (religious gathering) will be held at Nishtar Park, where Allama Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi will deliver a sermon. After the majlis, the Imamia Students Organisation will lead the congregational Zuhrain prayers. The procession will follow its traditional route—passing through Numaish, Saddar, Radio Pakistan, Jamia Cloth, and Denso Hall—before concluding at the Husainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. All security arrangements have been finalised for the event. In Lahore, the main procession commenced at 10:00 a.m. in city's Pandu Street area. Butchers cash in, charge premium for slaughter

Like the rest of the country, Eidul Azha was celebrated with religious zeal across Peshawar, the tribal areas, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday. Special Eid congregations were held in mosques and open grounds, with the largest gathering in Peshawar taking place at the city's main historic Eidgah on Charsadda Road. After offering Eid prayers, citizens performed the ritual animal sacrifices in accordance with the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Many also visited graveyards to offer prayers and recite fatiha for deceased parents and relatives. The tradition of animal sacrifice continued on both days of Eid. After completing the sacrificial rites, families prepared a variety of traditional dishes and hosted gatherings for close relatives, friends, and neighbors. Recreational parks in Peshawar saw large crowds, especially in the evenings. Butchers in high demand Butchers in the city had decided to cash on the situation well in advance, anticipating a surge in demand. On Eid day, they charged premium prices for their services. Many untrained and seasonal butchers also sprang into action, offering their services—sometimes at the expense of quality and hygiene. Rates for slaughtering animals varied. On the first day of Eid, professional butchers in Peshawar charged between Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 for large animals, and Rs5,000 to Rs10,000 for goat and sheep. On the second day, prices dropped slightly, with large animals being slaughtered for Rs8,000 to Rs10,000, and smaller animals for Rs3,000 to Rs5,000. Citizens who failed to pre-book professional butchers were often left to rely on the services of inexperienced or seasonal butchers. 24,939 tons of waste disposed of Advisor to the K-P Chief Minister on Information, Barrister Dr Muhammad Ali Saif, has announced that a total of 24,939 tons of animal waste and garbage were efficiently and promptly disposed of during the Eidul Azha cleanliness campaign across the province. On average, each district successfully managed the disposal of 693 tons of waste, with 10,779 personnel participating in the province-wide initiative. Barrister Saif noted that a total of 1,289 complaints were received during the campaign, all of which were addressed promptly and effectively.

Eid waste disposal: 9.5m eco-friendly waste bags distributed

LAHORE: The district administrations are distributing over 9.5 million eco-friendly waste bags in Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana for the disposal of sacrificial animal waste; 1.5 million bags in the provincial capital and over 9 million in the other three districts. This was disclosed during a Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC)'s briefing to Commissioner Lahore Division Zaid Bin Maqsood on Thursday. The Commissioner visited the Central Control Room, set up for cleanliness and online monitoring of the entire operation on Eid-ul-Adha at the LWMC Head Office; he was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioners of all four districts in Lahore Division. On this occasion, LWMC CEO Baber Sahib Din briefed the Commissioner about the cleaning operations in Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana districts. He said they will use a digital system to monitor the operations throughout the Lahore Division on Eid-ul-Adha. He averred that mechanical resources have been deployed, while 300 field camps have been set up in Lahore and 454 in Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Nankana for the immediate resolution of complaints and the free supply of biodegradable waste bags. He added that the best cleanliness arrangements are being ensured in 30 cattle markets set up in the Lahore Division. The Commissioner said this year, the LWMC is going to conduct cleanliness operations in Nankana, Sheikhupura and Kasur districts as well while the hotspot areas in the city of Lahore will be supervised by the Punjab Safe City Authority through drone cameras. Section 144 is enforced to deal with the people who throw offal in drains, canals and open plots. Strict action will be taken against the violators. He appealed to the people to cooperate with their teams by handing over animal waste packed in a bag to them, instead of throwing them on the streets. Meanwhile, on World Environment Day, the LWMC organised an awareness event on Mall Road to educate citizens about environmental protection. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique participated in the event along with Special Assistant Asim Mahmood and LWMC CEO Baber Sahib Din. The officials visited the LWMC's model camp set up at Charring Cross and distributed eco-friendly waste bags to the public. During the event, they engaged with citizens to encourage them to make the environment plastic-free. The event concluded with an awareness walk, which was attended by a large number of LWMC workers and residents. In addition, during a meeting with LWMC workers, the Minister urged them to work diligently during the Eid-ul-Adha festival. The LWMC CEO urged people to hand over plastic waste to sanitation staff rather than disposing of it on streets, green belts or in drains. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
