Indian junior archers enter three finals at Asia Cup Stage 2
Indian junior archers continued their dominating run by storming into three team finals at the Asia Cup Stage 2 here on Thursday (June 19, 2025).
The Indian men's recurve team, seeded second, defeated fifth-seeded Bangladesh 5-1 in a one-sided semifinal to set up a summit clash with third seeds Japan.
The trio of Vishnu Choudhary, Paras Hooda and Juyel Sarkar dominated from the outset, taking the opening set 55-48.
Although the second set was tied at 55-55, the Indians bounced back strongly, dropping just one point in the third set to win it 59-56 and seal the issue.
India also assured themselves of a medal in the compound men's team event after the trio of Kushal Dalal, Ganesh Thirumuru and Mihir Apar edged past fifth-seeded Australia in a tense semifinal decided by a shoot-off (30-29) after both teams were tied at 232 after four sets.
India will take on Kazakhstan in the final.
The top-seeded Indian compound women's team comprising Shanmukhi Budde, Tejal Salve and Tanishka Thokal defeated fourth-seeded Kazakhstan 230-229 in a nail-biting semifinal to ensure another medal.
They will meet Malaysia in the final.
However, there was heartbreak for the Indian women's recurve team. Seeded fifth, the troika of Vaishnavi Pawar, Kirti, and Tamanna lost a thrilling quarterfinal to fourth seeds Japan 4-5 (26-28) in the shoot-off after a five-set battle.
They lost the opening set 47-49 and slumped further after managing only 34 in the second set to Japan's 55.
But the Indians showed great resilience to take the third set 55-53 and level the scores 4-4 after claiming the fourth set 54-52.
In the shoot-off, Japan edged ahead by just two points.
Indian archers are also in the hunt for four individual medals on the concluding day on Friday.
The women's compound final will be an all-Indian affair, with Shanmukhi set to face Tejal for gold.
In the men's compound section, India will be in the hunt in both the gold and bronze medal matches.
Kushal will face Joshua Mahon of Australia for the gold, while Sachin Chechi will take on Himu Bachhar of Bangladesh for bronze.

The England captain welcomed the return of experienced all-rounder Chris Woakes, looking forward to his team's unbeaten run with him under the current captaincy. 'Since Baz (Brendon McCullum) and I have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Woakes played. Good to have him,' Stokes said. 'Headingley is generally the better cricket wicket overall. Let's see what the weather has in store,' Stokes added. 'To get to the WTC final, we need to win matches. That's what we need to focus on… the series ahead of us. If we win matches, we will reach the final. And if we get there, we will look to win that too,' Stokes said.

Leeds: Ahead of the first Test of the five-match series, England captain Ben Stokes said that despite being without their three experienced players - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin - it is not going to be easy for the hosts to dominate the Shubman Gill-led team because of the gigantic talent pool of the Indian cricket. Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the red-ball format last month, while Ashwin called time on his international career last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Gill's era, which is starting with the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for India at Headingley on Friday, India have a herculean task of filling the big boots of the stalwarts and approaching the future with a clear mindset. "There's been a lot said about no Rohit (Sharma), no Virat (Kohli) and no Ashwin. That doesn't mean that we think it's going to be any easier than it ever has been against India. The pool of talent that Indian cricket has is just ginormous," Stokes said in the press conference on the eve of the series opener. "So, although Virat, Rohit, and Ashwin have done amazing things for their country on the field, that doesn't mean that whoever comes in to replace those individuals are going to be any less hard to bowl that out back in just because of how big the pool of talent is in India. I've spent a lot of time out of the IPL, so I know that there's a lot of it. Obviously, three massive names, three people who have done wonderful things for their country, but it's not going to be any easier for us because of those three big names out here," he added. Stokes added that his side's sole focus is limited to the India series and not thinking beyond. "Well, look, I think first and foremost, obviously it's five games against India that we're focusing on. We know it's going to be tough, as always against India. Five Test matches are very demanding on the body. So, yeah, we'll be focusing on these five games first," he said. On Chris Woakes leading the pace attack in the first Test, the all-rounder said his inclusion adds value to their side. "Since me and Baz (Brendon McCullum) have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Chris Woakes played. Good to have him. "So, again, that just proves how valuable a cricketer is to any team that he turned out for. I think he, being the leader of the attack, is going to thrive off that responsibility. And, yeah, he's a quality critic, as you know, the relentless that he has with the ball, whether that be a new ball or a ball," he added. Stokes returned to competitive cricket last month after recovering from a left hamstring injury and is feeling "great" physically. "Physically, well, I mean, when I was 20, I didn't even know what stiffness or anything was. Obviously, now, 34, you know, everything is just naturally just a little bit harder to do," he said. "But I've worked hard to be where I am here today and, you know, physically where I'm at. It's great, you know, ready to go and just a bit more sensible, I guess, about my build-up. You know, work hard for, you know, the first two training days, two days out, and then, you know, sort of very, very chill than like the day before, just to make sure that everything is going to go come game day," Stokes added.

The incomparable James Anderson will go down in history as the only bowler who has tasted enormous success against two of Indian cricket's greatest batters, across generations. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, as legendary as they were, had their vulnerabilities against Anderson. The great Tendulkar, the Master Blaster, got out to Anderson nine times in Tests – the most any bowler had dismissed him, more than Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee – while Kohli lost his wicket to Jimmy seven times. Tendulkar and Kohli, that's a pretty good resume. Having said that, Anderson bowled to both these giants at very different stages of their careers. Tendulkar had already been around for 17 years when Anderson first squared off against him in the 2006 Test series in India. With Kohli, however, it was about two players in their prime battling for bragging rights. Anderson won the first round in 2014, before Kohli evened up four years later in 2018. During the 2021/22 series, neither dominated the other, but you'd have to give it to Anderson for getting Kohli out twice in a series where he scored two half-centuries. Tendulkar and Anderson, the two greats of the game, came together to unveil the new silverware, awarded to the winning team, whereas the ECB decided to continue the Pataudi legacy, confirming that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence will be given to the winning captain. As Anderson and Tendulkar sat down for a chat about what the honour means to them, interviewee and former England captain Michael Atherton had a list of questions ready. Anderson was asked what it was like to bowl to Tendulkar, especially given the fact that the Master Blaster wasn't one to easily get rattled. Through his career, there've been very few instances of Tendulkar losing his cool or engaging in a chat with the bowler, which is anything but what can be said about Kohli. Anderson admitted that not getting a reaction out of Tendulkar was frustrating, but then again, it's what sets the geniuses apart from the rest. So frustrating at times for me, because during India vs England in recent times, Virat Kohli has been the challenge for me. You get much more reactions from him; much more emotional. You can see what he's thinking," Anderson said. Anderson and Kohli had their own battles, lasting through the better part of 2010s. Anderson dismissed Kohli five times during the 2014 tour, but failed to get him out even once. During the last Test series in England, Kohli and Anderson had a very infamous run-in when tempers flared. "This isn't your fu**ing backyard," Kohli told Jimmy from the non-striker's end after Anderson 'swore' at the India captain. After Anderson brought Kohli into their conversation, Tendulkar opened up on his side of the story, explaining he hardly felt the need to trigger conversations with the bowler. Except Nairobi 2000 of course, when Sachin lashed out at Glenn McGrath, both verbally and with the bat. "I would engage in some kind of reaction or altercation only when I wanted to, only when I felt it was needed to distract the bowler. But when I felt I was in a good space, there was no need to disturb the bowler, then I wouldn't do it. But there have been occasions when I have started the conversation just to rattle the bowler. I think it is about owning the 22 yards, whether you are bowling or batting," said Tendulkar.
