Will Delhi-Dehradun Expressway be delayed? Farmers lock up housing board office over compensation dispute

Time of India26-04-2025

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway project is facing a delay. A land dispute in Mandola village near Ghaziabad is causing problems. Farmers are asking for higher compensation for land they gave up in 1998. On April 25, 2025, some farmers locked the gates of the UP Housing Board's office in Ghaziabad.
They said their payment issues are still not solved. A house on a 1,600 square metre land is blocking a key part of the expressway. The Allahabad High Court is hearing the case and may give a decision on April 29, 2025.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Mandola land dispute
The delay is mainly because of a 1,600-square-meter plot owned by the family of the late Veersen Saroha. In 1998, Veersen fought against the UP Housing Board's plan to take his land for the Mandola Housing Scheme. The Board had offered ₹1,100 per square meter. About 94% of families agreed and took the money. But Veersen and his family refused to give up their land. (as per newsbytesapp)
The matter later turned into a long court fight. After Veersen's death, his grandson Lakshyaveer took over the case. He also opposed the land being given to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is building the expressway. The case has been through many courts and is now with the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. A final decision can be expected most likely on April 29, 2025.
Impact on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway project
The expressway is being built in two main parts.
One is a 14.7 km stretch from Akshardham to the UP border.
The other is a 16 km stretch from Loni to Khekra at the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE).
The disputed house is right in the way of an important ramp section. This is blocking the final work on these parts. The NHAI said the project can be ready by June 2025 if the court issues are solved soon. But because of the ongoing case, this deadline may not be possible.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Farmers protest & housing board office lockdown
Farmers and affected landowners have locked up the Uttar Pradesh Housing Board office to escalate their protests over the compensation dispute. Their dissatisfaction with the money offered and delays in solving the land issues have further slowed down the project's progress.

NHAI criticised for not ensuring NH 66 is free of potholes before monsoon in Mangaluru

The Tollgate Horata Samithi, Surathkal, has decried the apathy of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in ensuring National Highway 66 between Surathkal and Nanthoor becomes pothole-free before the onset of monsoon. 'NHAI has written the foreword for the highway death series with the tragic death of Surathkal Janath Colony resident Ashraf on the night of June 9, at Panambur,' claimed Samithi convener Muneer Katipalla. 'Riding a two-wheeler, Ashraf encountered a deep crater on NH 66 at Panambur and fell down. He was crushed by a tanker trailing that was behind his two-wheeler. Ashraf leaves behind his elderly mother, wife and children.' Communal deaths counted It appears only communal murders are counted in the coastal region while deaths on the highway remain unaccounted for, Mr. Katipalla regretted. Despite the Samithi repeatedly demanding restoration of the Surathkal-Nanthoor stretch of NH 66 before the onset of every monsoon, the NHAI does not act, thereby causing the deaths of several motorists every year. When the Samithi organised a peaceful dharna with their demands urging the elected representatives to act, the police booked an FIR against them while caution notices were pasted at night by the police on their doors. Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta, who should have been proactive in addressing this issue, has instead joined the bandwagon of those indulging in 'murder politics' in Dakshina Kannada district, Mr. Katipalla said. Sharing the stage with people who deliver provocative speeches to incite violence, the MP was also a part of the delegation of BJP leaders, including R. Ashok, B. Y. Vijayendra, and D. V. Sadananda Gowda, who 'threatened' the district administration that was struggling to restore peace in the district. With the onset of the monsoon, the NHAI might not be able to carry out repairs on the highway, and no one knows how many people would lose their lives in the coming days. Asking the MP not to follow in the footsteps of MLAs D Vedavyasa Kamath and Y. Bharath Shetty, Mr. Katipalla urged Capt. Chowta to take immediate steps to ensure the highways remain pothole-free. 'Potholes on highways do not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims,' he said.

Good news for people going to airport from East Delhi... tunnel to connect Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Gyarah Murti, it is... (Picture for representation purpose) In order to provide relief from traffic jams in Delhi and to reduce the traffic load coming from East Delhi or South Delhi to the Ring Road, Pragati Maidan and Lutyens Zone, the Gyaara Murti (Dandi March Statue) located at the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Sardar Patel Marg T-junction will be connected by a tunnel of about 7-8 km. New plan for relief from traffic jam At the same time, the proposed elevated corridor from near INA to the airport under Barapullah Phase-4 is another important project. The purpose of the flyover construction is to smoothen the traffic to the airport for commuters from Lutyens Delhi and East Delhi. A few days ago, a high-level meeting was held between Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi government ministers. What is the complete plan of the government During this time, the officials of the ministry presented a plan to decongest Delhi through parts of different national highways and new projects . In the future, the government has planned a 128 km long project, on which an estimated expenditure of Rs 23,850 crore is expected. During the meeting, many traffic problems in Delhi were also mentioned, one of which was mentioned in front of the Subroto Park police post near Dhaula Kuan. NHAI has shifted the police post from here and demanded 1300 square meters of land so that a 3-lane wide service lane can be built to go towards Narayana.

For tunnel road tech, BBMP engineers visit Vizag, set to land in Kashmir next

BENGALURU: A team from the engineers' wing of BBMP has started visiting other Indian cities where tunnel road projects are being executed. This is to assess and adopt the best practices to execute the first phase of the 18-km-long tunnel road in Bengaluru. The cabinet on June 5, 2025 approved the construction of the north-south tunnel road corridor under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru in-charge minister DK Shivakumar has been insisting on the project, claiming that it will decongest the city. The first phase will be taken up at a cost of Rs 17,000 crore. The team recently visited Visakhapatnam to study the New Australian Tunnelling Method (NATM) that is being used by the NHAI to build the 464-km tunnel road reaching Raipur. The BBMP team is going next to Kashmir to understand the tunnel projects there. 'We went to Vizag to understand NATM, the land required and the time it takes as compared to other regular methods. The existing technology used by BMRCL cannot be adopted for the road project as the diameter of the tunnel boring machine for the Metro rail project is 5.6 metre, while the road project requires at least 14.6 metre,' BBMP Chief Engineer BS Prahalad told TNIE. Understanding different models is essential when executing the project in Bengaluru, where land acquisition and cost is a concern, he said. 'We need to understand each of the tunnelling methods before coming to a conclusion. So far nothing has been finalised,' he added. The visits and the preparatory work is going on at a time when citizens and experts have demanded that the project be dropped and the public transport system be strengthened. They pointed out that what is being done in other cities cannot be replicated here without a thorough analysis. BBMP sources said that instead of studying the technology, the engineering team should look at the feasibility and requirements of other cities and compare them to Bengaluru. But that is not being done, they added. Prof Ashish Verma, a mobility expert from IISc, said, 'Studies and various models prepared by us have shown that public transport is better when compared to the tunnel road. It is not a feasible project in the long run.'
