Second Sg Limbang Bridge to boost cross-border tourism, economy in northern Sarawak, says Premier

MIRI (June 14): The construction of the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge is set to become a key catalyst for tourism and economic development in northern Sarawak, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the cable-stayed bridge is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with full operations slated to begin by April next year.
'Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time from Limbang to the Brunei border, enhancing cross-border connectivity,' he said during a site visit today.
The project aligns with the state government's broader strategy to deepen ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam, complementing efforts such as the recently established Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei (STATOB).
'Currently, Sarawak and Brunei enjoy strong trade relations. With STATOB's presence and this new bridge, we're reinforcing bilateral cooperation. We've already reached an agreement with Brunei to jointly develop the region,' Abang Johari added.
He noted that the bridge will serve as a vital tourism corridor, providing easier access for Bruneian and international visitors through Bandar Seri Begawan, which will be just a 30-minute drive from Limbang once the bridge is operational.
'This will position Bandar Seri Begawan as a gateway for tourists to explore northern Sarawak, with seamless access to destinations like Gunung Buda and Mulu National Park,' he said.
He also revealed that the state government is actively developing supporting road infrastructure, including a new route from Limbang to Gunung Buda, which will improve connectivity to the Unesco-listed Gunung Mulu National Park.
'Gunung Buda is part of the Mulu range, and on the southern front, we are building roads from Miri to Marudi.
'The bridge to Marudi is completed, and the road will soon extend to Long Terawan in Mulu, which will eventually connect to the Gunung Buda road.
'This integrated road network will greatly improve tourist mobility and promote eco-tourism in both Sarawak and Brunei,' he said.
Separately, the Premier proposed enhancements to the Limbang Museum, including the incorporation of historical and developmental video presentations covering both Limbang and Lawas.
'The Limbang Museum holds valuable historical records from the past to present day. I suggest that we include development videos to reflect the progress and legacy of both Limbang and Lawas,' he said.
