India is all set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday with patriotic fervour and gaiety. In the run-up to celebrations, people nationwide are taking part in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Rallies and parades attracted crowds in various cities, while markets bustled with flag sales.

Residents pass resolution against stone quarry at Gram Sabha meeting in Ranipet
Residents including farmers, women and traders at Nambarai village and adjoining hamlets like Mogakannavaram, Anaimallur, Kannadikuppam and Periyankuppam, near Arcot town in Ranipet passed a resolution unanimously at the gram sabha meeting, which was held to mark 79th Independence Day celebrations, on Friday against setting up of new stone quarry in the village to protect roads and water bodies. Residents said that the existing stone quarry has been operating for the past few years in the area. Initially, functioning of the quarry was minimal with a smaller number of trips by lorries operated on the route. In recent months, the quarry that also has a manufacturing sand unit has been operating for hours. 'New stretches that were laid by the panchayat were badly damaged due to continuous movement of lorries and trucks to the quarry. Dust from the quarry gets settled on floors of many houses,' said H. Mayandi, a resident. At present, Nambari, a border village between Vellore and Ranipet, has more than 1,500 families, who are mostly dependent on farming, cattle rearing and poultry farming. The village also has at least four ponds and water channels that remains a major water source for irrigation and domestic consumption. Farmers said that the stone quarry has steadily increased its hours of operation for the past few months. Excavation of stones was done round the clock, giving sleepless nights to residents. Residents said that repeated petitions to revenue authorities in the district have not regulated the functioning of the quarry and movement of vehicles on the route. Even Sundays, loads of blue metal and sand are being transported from the quarry. As a result, residents said that resolutions were passed at the gram sabha meeting held in the village on Friday. They said that panchayat officials informed them that a proposal for a new quarry has been mooted at the foothills of a hillock where a few existing stone quarries operate. As per norms, the civic body should provide adequate water facilities and other civic amenities to run the new quarry. 'A public hearing will be held to set up a new quarry especially when there is an objection to the new facility,' said a TNPCB official.

Educational institutes in Visakhapatnam mark Independence Day with patriotic fervour
The 79th Independence Day celebrations were organised by various educational institutions across the district including Andhra University, Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy, IIM-Visakhapatnam, GITAM deemed to be University, and Dr Lankapalli Bullayya College. While hoisting the national flag, AU vice chancellor Prof. Raja Sekhar recalled the services of key freedom fighters and key academicians of the university on the occasion. He urged the students to adopt certain principles followed by them for better understanding of a bright career. G. Madhukumar, secretary and correspondent of Dr Lankapalli Bullayya College advised students to maintain their physical fitness, work hard in their chosen field, and have an open mind on various issues, continue to focus on important aspects and never become a slave to necessary habits.

Silk farming tableau wins first prize at Independence Day celebrations in Vijayawada
Tableau of silk farming, also known Sericulture department, won the first prize in the 79th Independence Day celebrations organised at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium here on Friday. The silk farmers displayed how they raise silkworms on Mulberry plants, collect cocoons and extract silk fibre from them. They also exhibited looms and colourful silk sarees weaved with the yarn. The tableau with slogan, 'My Silk – My Pride', explained the demand for silk garments produced by weavers of Venkatagiri, Uppada, Dharmavaram, Hindupuram and other places. The Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) won the second prize by exhibiting a lively tableau on the activities of the department. The tableau displayed the Anganwadi centres and pre-schools, and the nutrient diet being supplied to children, pregnant and lactating women at the centres, besides the schemes being provided by the government through the WD&CW department. The WD&CW tableau also showed the model of 'One Stop Centre', through which the government was providing rehabilitation for the victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, sexual harassment and other issues. Tableau of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) won the third prize. MEPMA officials presented how government was providing livelihood through digital initiatives, smart street vending zones, Amrutha Mithra, Rapido Services, Araku Coffee and the 'Avanee' brand launched by Self Help Group (SHG) women. Tableaux displaying the activities and schemes of P4, CRDA, Civil Supplies, Industries, Water Resources, Forest, Health, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, Education, SERP, Handlooms, Tourism and other departments were also part of the celebrations.
