Royal Navy sailor arrested over bomb hoax on nuclear submarine which sparked fears of doomsday meltdown
His alleged threat, thought to have been a prank, sparked fears of a doomsday meltdown, sources said.
The suspect, a Petty Officer on HMS Vanguard, was said to have called in the bomb warning to the submarine's main control room.
It triggered lockdown at HMNB Clyde where Britain's nuclear deterrent vessels are based, with a bomb squad racing to the scene in Faslane.
A source said: 'The suspect was working in the rear of the boat, in the engineering control room, and allegedly called up front to the main control room and claimed there was a bomb on board.
'It's not clear if he lost the plot or if it was a stupid prank that went horribly wrong.
'The person who took the call believed it was credible and triggered a full emergency response.
'They did a quick draw and the base piped orders to the Royal Marines to guard the jetty and the submarine hatches to make sure no one could come on or off.'
The suspect was subsequently held.
The Royal Navy said: 'We can confirm that a member of the Royal Navy is under investigation by the Defence Serious Crime Command for a bomb hoax.'

A provisional trial date has been set for seven men charged with causing grievous bodily harm after a man suffered a suspected bleed on the brain following a protest outside the Iranian embassy. They were arrested after the Metropolitan Police responded to reports of a fight in Princes Gate, Knightsbridge, west London, shortly after 9.50am on June 20. The defendants, who police said were all Iranian nationals, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday and spoke only to confirm their names. They are: Mohammad Nadiri, 31, of Islington, north London; Vahid Pourrezaei, 41, of Cricklewood, north London; Armin Hasanlov, 35, of Liverpool; Esmaeil Balouchy, 50, of Brentford, west London; Saeed Hosseingholipoor, 34, of Mitcham, south London; Farzin Suleimani, 31, of Birmingham; and Aref Yazdan Parast, 31, of Isleworth, west London. They were not asked to enter pleas to causing grievous bodily harm with intent after the court heard there were issues with legal representation. The court was also told there is an eighth defendant whose case could be joined to that of the seven men. Judge Gregory Perrins remanded the seven defendants in custody ahead of an adjourned plea hearing on August 1, with a provisional trial date set for January 5 next year. The defendants were taking part in a protest outside the Iranian embassy against the current regime in Tehran, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard previously. An Iranian flag was placed on the ground and one man 'knelt and kissed that flag before running off with it' and was attacked, the court heard. The victim was said to have suffered serious injuries including broken ribs, a broken ankle and a suspected bleed on the brain.

A body has been found in the search for missing jogger Rachel Booth. The mother was last seen walking into Sandiway Shell garage in the Northwich area of Cheshire at 3.50am on Saturday. A Cheshire Constabulary spokesperson said on Monday: 'Following extensive appeals and searches in the area, officers have now sadly recovered a body in a lake in Oakmere. 'Whilst formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be that of Rachel. Her family have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers. They have requested privacy at this time. 'There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.' Wild Shore Delamere, a local water park, had been shut down during the investigation. Issac Carolan, 19, who works in the garage where Ms Booth was last seen, said one of his colleagues had served her in the early hours of the morning. He said: 'She bought milk and wine and jogged from 45 minutes away. But it didn't seem weird, she didn't seem disturbed or flustered.' On Monday morning, two underwater search units were seen arriving in the area, next to Wild Shore Delamere water park. An incident command unit and a police dog vehicle were also at the scene. Police remained in the area after the news that a body had been found was announced, with roads to the lake cordoned off.

Yesterday, angry locals gathered outside The Bell Hotel in Epping for the second time to protest against its use as accommodation for asylum seekers after a man staying there was charged over three 'sexual assaults'. Ethiopian asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 10, where he denied a number of offences. Thursday's demonstration started peacefully, but ended with three arrests after clashes with counter protesters and an incident which saw a police van drive into a man. Six arrests were made during the protest on Sunday evening which attracted more counter demonstrations and has spilled over in to today as people continue to stand outside this morning. Amongst those in attendance last night was TikTok star and boxer Ed Matthews. The 24-year-old from Brentwood in Essex, who has over 248,000 Instagram followers, livestreamed his visit to the protest. He could be seen posing for selfies with fans before approaching police officers standing outside the hotel with a can of Stella in hand. He ignored the officers warning and proceeded to tell those around him to 'move out the way' before piercing a hole in the can and drinking from it in a bizarre performance 'If I shotgun this, is that illegal?', he asked one officer who replied: 'Why would you do that mate? Keith Silk, 33, from, Loughton, was arrested on Saturday and has been charged with violent disorder and criminal damage following clashes outside the hotel. He was remanded into custody and will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court today. Dean Walters, 65, of Harlow, has also been charged and released on bail to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on September 24, with stringent conditions until then. Another man arrested on Thursday for failing to comply with a dispersal order has been released on conditional bail.
