Junior Springboks: U20 Rugby Championship fixtures
For any rugby enthusiast in South Africa, there is always great interest in the performances of the Junior Springboks, particularly as it presents an opportunity to see some 'next gen' stars take flight.
The Junior Springboks are now in the final stages of their preparations for the U20 Rugby Championship, and according to the team's coaching consultant Johan Ackermann, they are eager to showcase their skills against some of the world's best junior teams.
The Junior Boks will begin their campaign next Thursday against Argentina at 16:10, following the tournament opener between New Zealand and Australia at 14:00.
Ackermann, who together with SA U20 assistant coach Lumumba Currie are focusing on the forwards, highlighted the importance of the set pieces in their preparations: 'We are working hard on our set piece because we know we are up against some of the best international teams that are going to test us on all fronts.'
'It's always good to be in the Eastern Cape where there is such a passion for the game,' added Ackermann. 'We have a wonderful group of boys who are eager to learn and looking forward to testing their skills against the best in the Southern Hemisphere.'
The format of the competition remains the same, with all teams playing each other once in a three-match round robin across three match days.

Leinster cruise through to URC final against Bulls but their jaded fans are not convinced
Despite being labelled the 'best in Europe' for years, the Irish giants have not lifted a major trophy since 2018. The semi-final victory did break one curse — they had lost their last three URC semi-finals, including a defeat to the Bulls — but the spectre of failure still looms large, particularly in the Champions Cup, where they've been runners-up too many times for their supporters to count. The men in blue were emphatic in ending the reign of defending champions Glasgow on Saturday, running in six tries in a 37–19 semi-final win. But for Leinster fans, reaching finals no longer means much — not after a string of near-misses and heartbreaks. The 'chokers' tag still pinned to the Leinster mast could well be the Bulls' biggest ally in Saturday's United Rugby Championship final in Dublin. More recently, Leinster were stunned at home by the Northampton Saints in a Champions Cup semi-final, prompting critics to argue the team was past its sell-by date and that some veterans needed to be moved on. Tellingly, before the Glasgow match, several Irish television pundits tipped the Warriors to win — a clear sign of how far confidence in Leinster had slipped. But a fired-up Leinster outfit came bursting out of the blocks. Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan crossed early, and centre Jamie Osborne added a brace of tries as the hosts raced ahead. By half-time, the match was effectively over as a contest. Leinster added two more tries after the break, with Glasgow salvaging respectability through two late consolation scores. The Bulls' analysts will no doubt take note of scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park's masterclass — the New Zealand-born No 9 dictated tempo and peppered Glasgow with astute kicks that regularly caused fumbles. However, they'll also have seen defensive frailties in Leinster flyhalf Sam Prendergast, who was exposed more than once. This ongoing issue is widely believed to have cost him a place in the British and Irish Lions squad set to tour Australia. That gives the Bulls a clear tactical opportunity: pressurise the brilliant Gibson-Park, and target Prendergast when attacking. The Bulls' back three, meanwhile, can expect another aerial assault on Saturday at Croke Park. Gibson-Park will almost certainly employ the same high-pressure kicking game that undid the Warriors. Still, for all Leinster's brilliance, few fans will believe they've finally broken their finals curse until they see captain and No 8 Jack Conan lifting the URC trophy. There is, however, a sense that the team has been sobered by past failures. The complacency that once cost them dearly appears to have been replaced by urgency and humility. That new mindset was perfectly captured in the post-match comments of Player of the Match Ryan Baird, the blindside flanker. 'We needed to turn up today — no excuses,' he said. 'We couldn't take it for granted. I was telling myself beforehand, I don't have a decision today — I have to turn up. 'We want to win this tournament, and that means you've got to show up. If you don't, you lose and you're out. It's as simple as that.'

New Zealand cricket names SA's Rob Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday he would leave the job of test coach at the end of the month, having relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of SA's one-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams and his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through time in which so many global events, ands massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led SA to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC CEO Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with SA, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." Junior Boks put Gqeberha heartache behind them
After the disappointment of ending third at the four-team U20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha in May, the Junior Boks are ramping up preparations for the World Rugby Championship, which kicks off in Italy on June 29. Two training sessions against a visiting senior Kenyan side have been included in a three-week training camp which starts in Stellenbosch on Monday. The meetings with Kenya will be match simulation exercises, with the first set for June 9 and the second five days later on June 14, in Stellenbosch. Junior Bok coach Kevin Foote has included three new players in a training squad. He has welcomed back several familiar faces who are back from injury and United Rugby Championship duty in addition to three newcomers in Rambo Kubheka (loosehead prop), Shaun Schürman (hooker) and Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf). Returning to the squad are locks Jaco Grobbelaar and Arno van der Merwe, No 8 Stephanus Linde, and outside backs Jaco Williams and Alzeadon Felix. ' Rambo, who played for the SA U18s last year, has been doing very well for Hollywoodbets Sharks in the SA Rugby U21 Cup, while Shaun and Ian, a very good game driver and left-footed kicker, have also been in good form for the Vodacom Bulls U21s,' Foote said. 'Jaco Grobbelaar, who played for the Junior Boks last year, is back from his Vodacom URC duty with the Vodacom Bulls and will join us in week two, and Stephanus, who toured with us to Georgia earlier this year, returns after he picked up a knee injury in the FNB Varsity Cup.
