New Zealand cricket names SA's Rob Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge.
Stead announced on Wednesday he would leave the job of test coach at the end of the month, having relinquished the short format roles in April.
Walter, 49, was most recently coach of SA's one-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams and his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022.
"The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement.
"It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through time in which so many global events, ands massive bilateral series, will be contested."
Walter, who led SA to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia.
"Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC CEO Scott Weenink.
"His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with SA, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps."
New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving SA.

But the Belgian would no doubt have been pleased with some of the players he handed debuts to in a friendly international intended for blooding new players. Khulumani Ndamani walked away with the man of the match award in his maiden appearance for the country's senior national team and expressed a desire to continue wearing the gold and green in future. On a night when the regular Bafana players were absent, the squad missed all the Mamelodi Sundowns players who usually make up the bulk of the starting line-up, the newbies gave as good as they got against a pretty physical Tanzania outfit that was clearly out to impress. Guided by the likes of Patrick Maswanganyi and Oswin Appolis who have been in the squad for a while now, Bafana controlled proceedings and asked questions of the visitors early on with the latter seeing his attempt that was headed for goal cleared just before it crossed the line on ten minutes. It could well have been that he was playing in the city where he plays his club football because Appollis was bafana's livewire and had two other chances, one a shot late in the half which the Tanzanian goalkeeper saved with consummate ease. He then blasted a free kick against the wall shortly after the break. Another Bafana 'oldie' Thalenthe Mbatha disturbed the bats' flying pattern with a rugby style shot late in the first half as the hosts looked to make their dominance count for a goal. Besides Ndanmane, Broos also handed new caps to Deano Van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe from the onset while goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner came on for Ricardo Goss during the second half. Relebohile Mofokeng came on late in the game and almost scored when he lobbed the advanced goalkeeper but only succeeded in landing the ball on the roof of the net. Tanzania played a pretty physical match with some crunching tackles that left Broos jumping up and down the sidelines in anger. He would have, however, been pleased with the exercise of handing out new caps in a bid to grow his pool of players ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September as wella s the Africa Cup of Nations finals set to take place in Morocco at the end of the year. Bafana are due to play against Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday.

Picture: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix An experimental Bafana Bafana failed to spark against Tanzania in an unremarkable goalless draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday. ALSO READ: Orlando Pirates release Chiefs-linked defender Hugo Broos may well have got what he needed to out of watching several players making their Bafana debuts in this international friendly. And the Belgian's competitive record is spectacular enough to suggest it will be put to good use in September's Fifa World Cup qualifiers. Bafana struggle This was a painful watch in general, however, as Bafana laboured to break down a Tanzanian side that seemed content with a draw from kick off. Three players were handed their Bafana debuts from the start against Tanzania. Orlando Pirates pair Deano Van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe along with TS Galaxy's Khulumani Ndumane got their chance to shine on the international stage. It was one of Bafana's regulars, Oswin Appollis, who shone in the first half. In just the fourth minute, the Polokwane City forward pounced on a mistake in the Tanzania penalty area, but his effort was cleared off the line. On the half hour mark, a neat passing move found Thalente Mbatha in space on the edge of the box, but he fired way off target. And on the stroke of half time, it was Appollis who threatened again, his long-range strike comfortably saved by Tanzania goalkeeper Suleiman Ali. In truth, the first half was a difficult watch, with neither side really able to string too much together in the attacking third. Greater intent Bafana came out with far more intent after the break. Tshepang Moremi nearly latched onto Mbatha's fine long range pass. Moremi then saw his fizzing long-range effort tipped wide by Ali. ALSO READ: Rulani speaks out on Pirates rumours Broos rang the substitutions as the game wore on. Sekhukhune goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner replaced Ricardo Goss to make his Bafana debut. Pirates winger Mohau Nkota also got on the pitch for his debut, while Relebohile Mofokeng entered the field at the same time. And Mofokeng blew a great chance to score in stoppage time when he was gifted possession and chipped the ball over Ali but onto the roof of the net.

Gerda Steyn and Piet Wiersma eye title defences as Comrades Marathon ‘down run' comes into sharp focus
After months of being in the headlines for negative reasons, the Comrades Marathon will shine for what it is all about — testing human endurance. Gerda Steyn and Piet Wiersma are out to defend the titles they won in 2024. More than a century old, the Comrades Marathon is the World Cup of road running. Stacked in history and a multitude of memorable moments that highlight just what humans can achieve with some willpower and preparation, the ultramarathon returns on Sunday, 8 June 2025. As is tradition, the 98th iteration of 'the ultimate human race' will feature runners from all walks of life, from professional runners to recreational runners. This year's edition will be the 'down run' — which will start at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finish in Durban's People's Park. The up run heads in the opposite direction. More than 20,000 participants are expected. Smiling Assassin In the women's field South Africa's own 'Smiling Assassin', Gerda Steyn, is out to crush all competitors as she targets a fourth overall victory in the historic marathon. In addition to her win a year ago, Steyn was also victorious in 2019, then again in 2023 — when she set a new women's record for the down run. Two years ago, Steyn crossed the finish line in 5:44:54. In the process she obliterated Frith van der Merwe's record (which had stood for more than three decades) by an enormous nine minutes. On the back of also winning this year's Two Oceans Marathon Steyn is the overwhelming favourite in the women's race — a tag she is embracing. 'When you come in as a defending champion, it comes with a certain amount of pressure. But I feel like it is the way you process that pressure (which can make or break you),' Steyn said before the race. 'I see pressure as a positive factor. I look at it as if it is nothing other than support and the belief others may have in me,' the 35-year-old added. Though she is the clear frontrunner for Sunday's spectacle, Steyn will be joined on the start line by fellow Olympian Irvette van Zyl. The 37-year-old is poised to make her Comrades debut, something she said had been on her bucket list for some time now. Despite her experience in marathons the Comrades will pose a different challenge for Van Zyl, so there is no guarantee that she will actually challenge Steyn. Competitive pool In the men's pool though, the competition is much tighter. Dutchman Piet Wiersma is the defending champion after his success in the up run a year ago. In 2023 Wiersma finished second behind down run record holder Tete Dijana — trailing by just three seconds. After his disappointing 14th-place finish a year ago, as he struggled with cramps, Dijana is hungry to reclaim his title as king of the Comrades. As well as his record-breaking 5:13:58 run in 2023, North West province's Dijana won the Comrades in 2022. 'I'm going to work hard and try to rectify what happened last year and forget about 2024,' Dijana told Top Runner. 'I don't want to express my targets. You'll just see what's going to happen. I know what I'm going to do.' 'People get jealous when I say I'm going to win. They don't want to hear the word win. I will just close my mouth and open my legs,' the former North West University security guard added. In addition to the forecast tussle between Dijana and Wiersma, 2019 champion Edward Mothibi is also in the mix, as are 2024 Two Oceans champion Onalenna Khonkhobe and last year's Comrades runner-up Dan Moselakwe. The rope runner Rope-running pioneer Marissa Groenewald will also be competing in this year's race as she aims to break the sport's distance record she set a few months go, when she completed the Two Oceans. This year's Comrades will be a total of 89.98km and Groenewald aims to skip the whole way to the finish line. 'The time has finally come. I am excited, overwhelmed and nervous. But more excited. Once you get to the expo and get your race number, it starts sinking in,' Groenewald told Daily Maverick. 'With the nerves and excitement, I am intrigued and interested to see how my body will fare. As much as I have prepared for it and I'm ready to give it my absolute all, I'm to see how I will be feeling when I reach 40km, 60km and then 80km (when I'll have 10 more kilometres to go),' she said. 'A lot of the preparation has gone into my mental state and mental preparation, as much as it's gone towards my body. You can throw anything at your body, as long as you prepare for it and you train hard. It's your mind that you need to conquer,' she added. 'So, that's what I'm looking forward to. Conquering my mind on Sunday and crossing the finish line, with skipping rope in hand. That will be my victory.'
