Black Caps to host four nations in packed summer of cricket
The Black Caps will host Australia, England, the West Indies, and South Africa in a packed home season this summer. In a schedule released this morning, New Zealand will host the visitors across multiple formats, the first three sides arriving before Christmas ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka — which starts in January. The White Ferns, involved in their own ICC Cricket World Cup between late September and early November, are set for a bumper 14-game home summer, including a first ever series against Zimbabwe, and a five-match T20I series against South Africa. The T20s will be held as double headers alongside the New Zealand men v South Africa. All fixtures of the home international summer will be broadcast on TVNZ+, TVNZ 1 and TVNZ DUKE. ADVERTISEMENT It will comprise of 46 days of international cricket played at nine venues throughout the country: Eden Park (Auckland), Seddon Park (Hamilton), Bay Oval (Tauranga), McLean Park (Napier), Sky Stadium (Wellington), Cello Basin Reserve (Wellington), Saxton Oval (Nelson), Hagley Oval (Christchurch) and the University of Otago Oval (Dunedin). NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said he was delighted NZC was able to wrap such an exciting home schedule around the two offshore global tournaments. 'It's great to welcome such a diverse range of opponents for both the Black Caps and White Ferns, and especially pleasing for NZC to host the first-ever series between Zimbabwe and New Zealand women,' he said. The Black Caps' white-ball challenges comprise three T20Is against Australia in Mount Maunganui in early October, followed by three T20Is and three ODIs against England, and a five-match T20I series and a three-game ODI series against the West Indies. 'A marquee summer' Black Caps pace bowler Kyle Jamieson, who made a successful return from injury in the recent home summer, said it was exciting to have some of the best teams in the world coming to New Zealand. 'It feels like a marquee summer,' he said. ADVERTISEMENT 'The calibre of opposition means we'll be constantly tested for the duration of the season and that's what you want as a cricketer. 'It's great to have another three-Test series at home and I'm sure the fans will get in behind the Test team as they have in seasons gone by. 'It's always special to play in front of a home crowd and we're hoping Kiwis will get out in force to support us once again this summer.' White Ferns rising star Georgia Plimmer said her side had plenty to look forward to. 'We can't wait for the international season and the chance to play in another ICC Cricket World Cup,' she said. 'We want to play as much cricket as we can, especially in front of our home fans and it's exciting to have a 14-game home summer to prepare for. 'It's great to see more T20I doubleheaders as they are such a great experience for teams and fans alike and it was awesome to see such strong crowds last season.' Former All Black Daryl Gibson to help New Zealand's top cricketers
Former All Black Daryl Gibson Photo: Chris Symes / PHOTOSPORT Former All Black Daryl Gibson will take up a high performance role with New Zealand Cricket. Gibson, who played 19 Tests for the All Blacks between 1999 and 2002, has been appointed the new chief high performance officer for New Zealand Cricket. He takes up the position next month replacing Bryan Stronach, who announced earlier this year that he would be leaving the job. Gibson is currently the head of high performance coaching at High Performance Sport New Zealand. He has been involved in shaping the strategic direction of coaching across a wide variety of sports, supporting over 450 pathway coaches from elite to pre-high-performance levels. Christchurch-based with Canterbury roots, Gibson has led initiatives such as the Kia Manawanui coach programme, mentoring 15 elite coaches for Paris 2024 and overseeing targeted coach education programmes. After his playing days Gibson moved into coaching and assisted Fiji at the 2023 World Cup. "It's a real privilege to join NZC at a time of transformation - with a new head coach, a bold five-year strategic plan, and a playing culture that exemplifies a spirit of winning with mana," Gibson said. NZC chief executive Scott Weenink was delighted to sign Gibson, noting the breadth and depth of his high performance experience. "Daryl's experience as an All Black, combined with his strategic leadership within high performance coaching, and his educational expertise made him an outstanding candidate," said Weenink. "His ability to foster talent and build sustainable systems aligns perfectly with NZC's vision for the future.

New Zealand cricket names SA's Rob Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday he would leave the job of test coach at the end of the month, having relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of SA's one-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams and his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through time in which so many global events, ands massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led SA to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC CEO Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with SA, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving SA. Reuters

NZ hand young talent contracts as big guns remain casual
June 3 (Reuters) - New Zealand Cricket has handed a quartet of young talents central contracts for the 2025-2026 season as more established players such as Kane Williamson and Devon Conway continue to opt for casual deals. All-rounders Muhammad Abbas and Zak Foulkes, wicketkeeper Mitch Hay and leg-spinner Adithya Ashok were all included for the first time when the 20-strong list of centrally contracted players was released on Tuesday. Abbas, 21, hit 52 of 26 balls on his one-day international debut against Pakistan in March and also took the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan with his left-arm pace. Foulkes, 22, played his first internationals last year, while 24-year-old Hay scored an unbeaten 99 against Pakistan in an ODI in April. The inclusion of 22-year-old Ashok, who made his international debut in 2023, contributed to the absence from the list of more experienced spinners Ish Sodhi and Ajaz Patel. Batting all-rounder Josh Clarkson and former skipper Tim Southee, who has retired, were the other changes from last year's list. "The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system," NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said in a press release. "These players have shown they can compete at the highest level, and their hunger to represent the Black Caps is exciting. "We're thrilled to see this group drive our team forward." NZC said Williamson, Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson were all in negotiations over casual contracts, which will enable them to take part in lucrative Twenty20 leagues around the world as well as represent their country. New Zealand next play a T20 tri-series with Zimbabwe and South Africa in Harare in July followed by a two-test series against the hosts.
