Wolverhampton entertainment venue recognised for its acoustics
A Wolverhampton entertainment venue that went through a major refurb has been shortlisted for an award for its acoustics.The refit of University of Wolverhampton at the Halls created a larger stage, new balconies and bars and better disabled access.Project manager Sandy Brown, an acoustic consultancy, submitted an entry for the Acoustic Awards 2025 for its work on the venue, which reopened in 2023.Shortlisted entrants will give a four-minute presentation after the Acoustics and Noise Consultants' (ANC) conference in Birmingham on Wednesday.
In a post on Linkedin, the ANC said Sandy Brown's entry showcased "the successful modern revitalisation of a historic venue, carefully preserving its architectural heritage while meeting contemporary performance standards".The Grade II listed site, which comprises the Wulfrun and Civic Halls, increased its capacity to a total of 4,600 during the building work.The ANC said its design and construction "tackled complex challenges to implement an acoustic strategy to ensure the Halls could host a range of events".Since it reopened, the venue has welcomed the likes of Blur, Robert Plant and McFly.
Also competing in the Acoustic Awards 2025 performance space category are Acoustic Consultants for work on Albert Hall, Swansea and SRL Technical Services for Co-op Live in Manchester.

Daisy Edgar-Jones to lead new big screen take on Sense and Sensibility
Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to lead a new big screen adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. The actor, who broke out in hit miniseries Normal People, is set to play Elinor in a movie based on the first novel from the author whose 250th birthday is being celebrated by a number of events this year. The 27-year-old teased the news on Instagram in a post of her holding the book. Production is set to begin next month. The film will be directed by Georgia Oakley, who received acclaim for her 80s-set drama Blue Jean which told the story of a lesbian teacher keeping her sexuality under wraps in Thatcher's England. It will also boast Working Title producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner who previously worked together on 2005's Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and 2020's Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy. The story tells of the Dashwood sisters who are in need of financial security and seek it via potential suitors. It was previously turned into an Oscar-winning film in 1995 by Ang Lee with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet starring as well as a BBC series in 2008. The film joins an upcoming Netflix series based on Pride and Prejudice starring Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden and Olivia Colman. Since her role in the romantic drama series based on Sally Rooney's novel, Edgar-Jones has starred in dating thriller Fresh, blockbuster sequel Twisters, a hit adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing and 50s-set queer drama On Swift Horses. She will next be seen opposite Michelle Williams in workplace thriller A Place in Hell from Fair Play writer-director Chloe Dumont.

George Clooney and wife Amal were in good spirits on Wednesday as they attended the King's Trust Award at Buckingham Palace. The Hollywood icon, 64, and his human rights lawyer wife, 47, dressed to impress as they attended the reception celebrating the winners at the palace. George and Amal couldn't contain their smile as King Charles III chatted away to the couple before greeting guests. The actor cut a dapper figure in a grey suit which he teamed with a matching open collar shirt. Meanwhile Amal made sure to turn heads in a black off the shoulder gown which she teamed with towering heels and a gold clutch. The Clooneys have long supported the work of The King's Trust, formerly known as The Prince's Trust. The Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment Award, launched in 2019 with the Trust, celebrates the achievements of inspirational female youngsters around the world. Amal posed in a snap with Alice Ngitira who was nominated for a King's Trust award for her work with young people and her dedication to overcoming mental health challenges. She was recognised for her crafting workshops which she developed when she was hospitalised. Barrister Amal is known for her work defending women's and human rights issues across the world, while her and George co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice back in 2016. The non-profit organisation focuses on defending human rights, particularly free speech and women's rights, by providing free legal aid and advocating for policy changes. The King met with the winners of the eight UK categories during the day as well as the three winners of the three global categories ahead of the awards ceremony, which will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on Thursday. Also mingling with the royal was make-up mogul Charlotte Tilbury, who looked to enjoy a spirited chat with the royal, and national treasure Dame Joanna Lumley. Actor Joseph Fiennes, presenter Declan Donnelly, Fearne Cotton, Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley and members of girl group the Sugababes were also present at the glitzy reception. The star-studded reception greeted a beaming Charles after he had appeared to enjoy the performance by The Herds, a group of life-sized animal puppets operated by artists at the event earlier this afternoon. The contraptions slowly made their way down a staircase in the Grand Hall before the Gorilla moved towards the King and held out its arm. The public art group are travelling from the Congo Basin to the Artic Circle, to raise awareness of humanity's bond with the natural world and the impact of climate change. They have just arrived in London ahead of a series of performances at landmarks throughout the capital this weekend.

Steam train brings Wallace & Gromit sculptures to Bristol for summer arts trail
A steam train loaded with sculptures of Wallace, Gromit, Feathers McGraw and Wallace's invention Norbot has made its way into Bristol to promote a new arts trail. The heritage train was loaded with a dozen unique character sculptures and driven by Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park to mark the start of Gromit Unleashed 3. The sculpture trail is a joint initiative by The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children's Hospital Charity, and multi-award winning independent studio Aardman. The harbour railway train was greeted by school children before one of the sculptures was lifted onto the harbour's heritage cranes and another sent off to its summer location onboard Bristol's former fire-boat, the Pyronaut. Over the coming days, all 53 sculptures will be delivered to their trail locations, throughout the city of Bristol and beyond ahead of next Monday's launch. Joining Park's two sculpture designs were creations by Sir Paul McCartney, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Richard Curtis, Jorge R Gutierrez and Peter Lord. 'It's amazing to see such imagination and originality from the artists taking part in our trail this summer,' Park said. 'I've had the privilege of watching the work of such talented creators coming together all in support of a great cause – The Grand Appeal. 'I look forward to a summer of Gromiteering around Bristol and beyond this summer.' The Gromit Unleashed 3 trail will run from June 30 to August 31. The trail will be followed by The Greatest Dog Show on Earth exhibition before all the sculptures are auctioned to raise money for The Grand Appeal. Nicola Masters, director of The Grand Appeal, added: 'It's a cracking day to unleash our 2025 sculptures today – setting the wheels in motion for a grand day out the whole city can enjoy. 'Each sculpture has been brought to life through the magic of film, fables, tales and folklore – a dazzling celebration of storytelling (and) imagination. 'A star-studded spectacle that brings glitz, glamour and a touch of movie magic to the trail.' Gromit Unleashed 3 is now the fourth sculpture trail by The Grand Appeal and Aardman Animations. It builds on the success of Gromit Unleashed, Shaun in the City, and Gromit Unleashed 2.
