Irv Gotti, renowned music producer and founder of Murder Inc. Records, passes away at 54
Irv Gotti, the renowned record executive, music producer, and entrepreneur best known for founding Murder Inc. Records, has died at the age of 54, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., played a major role in shaping hip-hop and R&B in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was instrumental in the success of artists like Ja Rule, Ashanti, and DMX, helping craft a signature blend of hip-hop beats and melodic hooks that dominated the charts from 2001 to 2004.
His production work contributed to several multi-platinum hits, including "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" with Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule, as well as "Always on Time", "Foolish", "Rain on Me", and "Mesmerize" with Ashanti.
Before launching Murder Inc. in 1998, Gotti worked as an A&R executive at Def Jam, where he was responsible for bringing DMX, Jay-Z, and Ja Rule to the label. Under his early moniker DJ Irv, he produced "Can I Live" from Jay-Z's 1996 album Reasonable Doubt.
His production credits also include projects with Kanye West, Memphis Bleek, Fat Joe, and Christina Milian. Additionally, Gotti ventured into television, creating BET's Tales, an anthology series combining hip-hop and storytelling.
Despite his success, Gotti faced setbacks in the mid-2000s due to an FBI investigation into alleged ties with drug kingpin Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff. Though acquitted, the legal battle hurt Murder Inc.'s reputation.
Gotti is survived by his three children—Angie, Sonny, and Jonathan Wilson—his mother Nee Nee Lorenzo, sisters Tina and Angie, and his brother Chris Lorenzo, with whom he co-founded Murder Inc.
Following the news, tributes from the music industry quickly surfaced online including Kanye West.
However, rapper 50 Cent took a controversial approach, posting a photo on Instagram of himself smoking beside a grave headstone with the caption:
"I'm smoking on dat Gotti pack, nah God bless him LOL."

Kendrick Lamar wins big at 2025 BET Awards
Kendrick Lamar was the top winner at the BET Awards on Monday night, an awards ceremony honouring black actors, singers and sports stars. The 30 For 30 rapper won the best male hip-hop artist award, best album of the year and the video of the year award for Not Like Us. Lamar and filmmaker Dave Free also took home the video director of the year award at the event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast on the BET cable channel. "BET has always made sure they're representing the culture right and always put me in the midst of the cycle of what we represent," Lamar said on stage when accepting his award. Host comedian Kevin Hart opened the ceremony by recognising the BET Awards' 25th anniversary and all of the "history that has been made" on the stage. The ceremony traversed the evolution of black music, starting with a performance by R&B artist Ashanti that featured a compilation of songs, including her 2002 song Foolish. Additional performances included other 2000s songs Ballin' by Mustard, 1 Thing by Amerie and Like You by Bow Wow. Hart led with jokes while also highlighting the BET Ultimate Icon Award winners of the night, including Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg. The special award was given to those that have paid homage to music, entertainment, advocacy and community impact. Presented by Stevie Wonder, Foxx accepted his award and reflected on his recovery journey after having a stroke in 2023. "I have to be honest, when I saw the in memoriam, I was, 'Man, that could have been me,'" he said. Another honour included the best female hip-hop artist award for rising rapper Doechii. "(US President Donald) Trump is using military forces to stop protest," Doechii said in her acceptance speech. "I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us." Reuters

Ashanti, Bow Wow, B2K lead 106 & Park tribute at 2025 BET Awards
The 2025 BET Awards featured a heartfelt tribute to BET's iconic music video countdown show, 106 & Park, with a nostalgic performance lineup that celebrated the program's lasting cultural influence. Ashanti performs "Happy", "Rock Wit U (Aww Baby)" & 'Foolish' at the 2025 #BETAwards — RNB RADAR (@RNB_RADAR) June 10, 2025 The tribute kicked off with former host Keshia Chanté introducing Ashanti—who made history as the first artist to have a video retired on the show. The R&B star performed a smooth medley of her early 2000s hits 'Happy' and 'Foolish,' drawing cheers from the crowd. Jim Jones followed with a high-energy rendition of his anthem 'Ballin',' setting the tone for Amerie's lively recreation of her '1 Thing' dance routine. Keeping the momentum going, Terrence J hit the stage to introduce Keyshia Cole. The singer delivered an emotional performance of 'I Should Have Cheated,' which had the entire crowd singing along. Mya continued the nostalgic wave with her 2000 hit 'Case of the Ex,' paired with a routine reminiscent of her original video. Shortly after, hosts Julissa Bermudez and Big Tigger brought out Atlanta legend T.I., who fired up the audience with a medley of his hits 'Bring Em Out' and 'What You Know.' Longtime co-host Free made a solo appearance, taking viewers back to 106 & Park's early years. She upped the excitement by reuniting all four members of B2K—Omarion, Lil Fizz, Raz B, and J-Boog—who performed their chart-topping hit 'Bump, Bump, Bump,' with Fizz handling Diddy's original verse. Finally, Mr. 106 & Park himself, Bow Wow, closed out the tribute with a string of fan favorites including 'Take Ya Home' and 'Like You.' He then brought out longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri for a surprise finale performance of 'Fresh Azimiz.' Capping off the tribute, Cam Newton and Ashley Nicole Moss announced 106 & Sports, a new BET series inspired by the original countdown show, set to debut this fall.

Justin Bieber's social media posts continue to raise concerns among fans
Justin Bieber's latest Instagram post has sparked widespread concern among fans, many of whom are urging the singer to 'get help' following a series of mirror selfies shared on Saturday. The photos, taken in a bathroom, show Bieber posing awkwardly and making exaggerated faces. He captioned the post, 'U could point at my flaws. Or u could recognize ur own lil b**ch.' Followers quickly flooded the comments with concern. 'So hard and sad to watch. Why are the people around him not helping him when he's clearly struggling. He's not clear at all and hurting,' one comment read. Another added, 'Babe. Please go get help.' Some fans compared Bieber's behaviour to other celebrities known for public struggles. 'It's looking like Liam Payne and Britney [Spears] someone needs to help him before it's too late,' wrote a user. Several referenced a February appearance at Hailey Bieber's Rhode Skin event, where his erratic actions raised eyebrows and triggered speculation about possible drug use. Although his representative previously denied any substance abuse and criticised the drug rumours as 'harmful,' Bieber has continued to openly display his marijuana use. In April, sources close to the singer voiced their alarm in The Hollywood Reporter, saying they were watching him 'disintegrate.' One former team member said, 'He's lost. There's no one protecting him because there's no one there willing to say no to him.'
