Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi has weighed in on the Monnapule Saleng matter, and how it affected the club this season.
Pirates, of course, secured another runner-up finish in the Betway Premiership under José Riveiro and it was without the services of Saleng since December.
The 27-year-old was believed to have been left out of the side due to a salary dispute, although the club has not confirmed this as they remained tight-lipped on the situation.
As one of the best wingers in the country and not known to be nursing any kind of injury, his absence was keenly felt by Pirates, believed Lekgwathi.

Lekgwathi Highlights Pirates' Squad Depth and Challenges
'I think we have depth in the squad,' Lekgwathi, who played for Pirates for 12 years as he earned over 300 caps for the Soweto Giants, told iDiski Times.
'In previous seasons, I have complained about the number of players in each position, but now you can see it. For example, the defenders, Tapelo [Xoki] came in, he did well, when he's out [Nkosinathi] Sibisi is there, and now [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi is bossing the backline, and we still have the likes of [Olisa] Ndah and [Innocent] Maela on the bench. I think there is competition and a healthy one at that in all the positions.'
Stopping short of saying that Saleng would be the first choice for Pirates, Lekgwathi said: 'The danger of having too many players in the team is that even the coach won't be able to focus. The only thing I think almost ruined things was the [Monnapule] Saleng matter. If we hadn't had that issue, I think we'd be talking a different story because you'd know we have depth on the left and on the right.
'Right now, if [Mohau] Nkota isn't playing, I don't know who is supposed to be in that position.'

Aside from a few brief press conference appearances and in-house interviews, Berg has never meaningfully engaged the public on his football philosophy or his mandate at the Brazilians. They deserve to know the direction in which he is taking the club. From what I understand, he makes no secret of the fact that he doesn't care what the outside public thinks of him. Problematic attitude That kind of attitude is not only problematic, it also deepens the disconnect between the club and its sporting director. Engaging the fans through various media platforms would go a long way in calming the storm that followed their 2024/25 Champions League final shock defeat. Fans are understanding and they will support him if they feel that he is genuinely listening, rather than speaking at them through short press clippings. In his first three full seasons in charge after being officially announced as the sporting director in April 2022, Berg has delivered three Premiership titles. He may also claim the African Football League triumph, but what the fans truly crave is the CAF Champions League. Under his leadership, Sundowns have lost three domestic cup finals, in addition to last Sunday's champions league decider. On that basis alone, his tenure has been somewhat underwhelming. The outrage over the champions league defeat has been simmering beneath the surface for some time. The first major frustration was the decision to part ways with Rulani Mokwena, who came close to completing an unbeaten season. Berg may not have absolute power to make changes, but he is a central figure in football decisions at the Betway Premiership champions. It's clear that Mokwena's main shortcoming was his failure to deliver Africa's most prestigious club competition. If that is the yardstick by which success is measured, then surely the current situation can't be allowed to continue following the loss to Pyramids FC. Berg now faces a significant decision, and so does the club because this is a problem of their own making. Sundowns at the World Club Cup While I don't expect much from Sundowns at the FIFA Club World Cup, a poor showing will not only push supporters over the edge, but also intensify the scrutiny of Berg's time in South Africa. I have already shared my views on the ill-advised omission of club captain Themba Zwane, so I won't revisit that here. Orlando Pirates have already made themselves busy ahead of the upcoming offseason window, and it seems the next player in their sights is Zimbabwean 16-year-old Prince Ndlovu. 'He (Ndlovu) trained with Pirates in March 2023 and and at that time he was only 16-years-old. He was preparing to go to Europe but things didn't work out,' a source revealed. 'It's believed that since then Pirates scouts have apparently been monitoring him and now they are willing to give him a chance at the team. Orlando Pirates revisit interest in exciting teenage attacker
Orlando Pirates had a 16-year-old prodigy on their books not so long ago. Now, they've reignited their interest in the Zimbabwean star.
