The European Union and Samir Kassir Foundation launched Tuesday the 20th edition of the Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press.
The award, which has been granted by the European Union since 2006, honors the Lebanese journalist and writer Samir Kassir, who was assassinated in 2005. The competition for the award has attracted since its creation more than 3,600 candidates from the Middle East, the Gulf and North Africa and 55 journalists have won the award so far.
"Twenty years later, the Samir Kassir Award remains as relevant as ever. For freedom of the press is not merely a principle. It is a fundamental right in any democracy. Without a free press, the next 20 years could see even more violence, oppression and misinformation, not only in the region, but also in Europe and other corners of the world," said the Ambassador of the European Union to Lebanon Sandra De Waele.
Acting President of the Samir Kassir Foundation, Malek Mrowa, added: "The 20th edition of the Samir Kassir Award seeks to recognize and celebrate the bravery of journalists whose words and stories defy all weapons and continue to shine a light in the darkest corners. It will be granted amid pains that reached their peak during the past year, and new hopes drawn by radical, developing changes."
The Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press is open to professional journalists from North Africa, the Middle East, and the Gulf. The deadline for sending in contributions is 1 April 2025. Three awards will be granted for the best:
- Opinion Article
- Investigative Article
- Audiovisual News Report
The contributions must be centered on one or more of the following topics: rule of law, human rights, good governance, fight against corruption, freedom of expression, democratic development, and citizen participation. The winner of each of the three categories will receive a prize of €10,000.
The jury will be composed of seven voting members from Arab and European media and one observer representing the European Union. The names of the winners will be communicated during the prize-awarding ceremony, which will take place on 3 June 2025 in Beirut, one day after the 20th anniversary of Samir Kassir's assassination.
The contest regulations, application forms, rules, and conditions are available on the Award's website: www.samirkassiraward.org
Registration closes on 1 April 2025.

Iran says it detained 21,000 suspects during the June war with Israel

by Naharnet Newsdesk 12 August 2025, 19:43 Iran's police detained 21,000 suspects during the 12-day air war between Israel and Iran in June, state media reported on Tuesday. A report by state TV quoted a police spokesperson, Gen. Saeed Montazeralmahdi, as saying people reported the suspects to the authorities. "The arrest of 21,000 suspects during the 12-day war indicated high awareness and participation of people in providing security," he said. Montazeralmahdi did not elaborate on what charges the suspects might face. However, he said more than 260 were suspected of spying and other 172 were arrested because of illegal filming. He added that police put more than 1,000 checkpoints across the country during the conflict, between June 13-24. This is the first time Iran's police has given a total number of arrests during the war. In recent weeks Iran occasionally reported about the arrests of suspects on spying charges. Since the end of June, Iran has executed seven men convicted of spying for Israel, sparking fears from activists that the government could conduct a wave of executions. Israel carried out waves of airstrikes on Iran, killing nearly 1,100 people, including many military commanders. Retaliatory Iranian strikes killed 28 people in Israel.

Bassil says Hezbollah arms have become a 'source of threat'

by Naharnet Newsdesk 12 August 2025, 19:35 Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil stressed Tuesday that 'any arms outside the state are illegitimate,' adding that 'the Movement adopts a clear stance on the inevitability of restricting arms and their command to the state alone without any partnership or interference.' 'The FPM's stance also stems from the Taif Agreement, which stipulated the dissolution of all militias but was not fully implemented, which led to overlooking the resistance's arms and other clauses,' Bassil added in a televised address. 'The successive governments legitimized these weapons and the time has come for implementing this clause as well as other clauses, such as decentralization, the abolition of sectarianism and establishing a senate,' the FPM chief said. He clarified that 'realistic changes have happened and have necessitated a change in the FPM's approach on the issue of arms.' Noting that 'the deterrent mission of Hezbollah's arms fell due to its unilateral participation in the 'war of support' (for Gaza)' and the war with Israel that followed, , Bassil warned that 'the idea of the presence of arms itself has become a source of threat, danger and great harm for Lebanon.' 'These arms must be placed in the hand of the state exclusively and should not stay in the service of any axis,' the FPM chief said. He also rejected 'blackmail and threats of civil war from any group with the aim of preventing the unity of arms in the hand of the state.'

US, Jordan offer Syria support in upholding Sweida ceasefire

by Naharnet Newsdesk 12 August 2025, 19:46 Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers and a U.S. envoy agreed on Tuesday to form a working group to help Damascus uphold a ceasefire in Sweida province, rocked by recent sectarian clashes. In a joint statement issued after a meeting in Amman, Jordan and the United States said they "agreed to respond to the Syrian government's request to establish a trilateral working group (Syrian–Jordanian–American) to support the Syrian government's efforts to consolidate the ceasefire" in Sweida and "resolve the crisis" there. They also agreed to hold another meeting in the coming weeks. The Syrian foreign ministry said its top diplomat Asaad al-Shaibani met with Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and U.S. envoy for Syria Tom Barrack to discuss "ways of strengthening cooperation and coordination between the three sides" in order to serve Syria's stability, "sovereignty and regional security". Damascus said the sides had agreed to form a working group "to support the Syrian government's efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Sweida province, and work to find a comprehensive solution to the crisis". The meeting on Tuesday was a continuation of discussions held between the officials in Amman on July 19 about deadly clashes in the Druze-majority Syrian province of Sweida, where a week of sectarian violence killed 1,400 people before a ceasefire put an end to the bloodshed. Syria's minority communities have expressed concerns for their safety since December, when an Islamist-led offensive toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, who had presented himself as a protector of minorities. While the new Syrian authorities have repeatedly stated their intent to protect all of the country's ethnic and religious groups, the killing of more than 1,700 mostly Alawite civilians along the coast in March and the violence in Sweida have raised doubts about their ability to manage sectarian tensions. Barrack, in a post on X, described the talks on Tuesday as "productive", adding that the Syrian government had "pledged to utilize all resources to hold perpetrators of the Suwayda atrocities accountable," using an alternative transliteration of the province's name. "Syria will fully cooperate with the UN to investigate these crimes, including the horrific violence at Suwayda National Hospital", he added. Jordan's King Abdullah II separately met with Shaibani and Barrack, expressing his "support for Syria's efforts to preserve its security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity", a royal statement said. It noted "the importance of Washington's role in supporting the reconstruction process in Syria in a manner that preserves the rights of all Syrians". The king also said Jordan was ready "to share its expertise in all fields to help develop and strengthen the capabilities of Syrian institutions" and "noted the need to step up Jordanian-Syrian cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism and preventing arms and drug smuggling", the statement added. According to the Syrian statement, the foreign ministers' meeting welcomed Damascus's efforts to "restore basic services, hold perpetrators of violations to account, and prepare the conditions for the return of displaced people to their homes."
