Over 500 STEM graduates take employability test under Nipun Karnataka programme
The psychometric and technical online employability assessment for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates under the Nipun Karnataka programme was successfully conducted on Saturday at Shetty Institute of Technology off Kalaburagi–Shahabad Road with over 500 candidates participating in it. Deputy Commissioner B. Fouzia Taranum and Kalaburagi Mayor Varsha Jane visited the Shetty Institute of Technology to take stock of the assessment process. Joint Director of the District Industries Centre Abdul Azeem, District Skill Development Officer Nagubai, Kiran Deshmukh and Shiba Mehta were also present. Additional Deputy Commissioner Rayappa Hunasagi, Assistant Commissioner Prabhu Reddy and Kalaburagi Tahsildar Anandasheela supervised the arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of the test. The test, managed by Unstop, was organised by the Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology and the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation to address the growing gap between education and employment in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The pilot project, being implemented for the first time in the State, targets 2,500 STEM graduates shortlisted from among 10,000 candidates who attended the mega job fair in Kalaburagi in April this year. 'We have signed a memorandum with Unstop to conduct the employability assessment of STEM graduates. Over 1,700 students have already registered and around 500 participated on the first day of the test. Each student will receive a scorecard highlighting areas that need improvement. We will provide targeted assistance to help them strengthen those skills. The ultimate aim is to make our graduates truly employable. We are also engaging with industry partners who can train and recruit these job-aspiring candidates,' Ms. Taranum said after the visit. 'Spearheaded by Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Information Technology and Biotechnology and district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge, Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Minister Sharan Prakash Patil and Lok Sabha member from Kalaburagi Radhakrishna Doddamani, the initiative aims to identify skill gaps, provide targeted training and prepare candidates for industry-ready employment,' she added. Unlike conventional skill programmes, the 90-minute test evaluates each candidate's aptitude, communication skills, digital literacy and behavioural readiness. Organisers said that the approach will not only enhance a student's employability but also help employers find job-ready talent and enable educational institutions to align training with real-world industry requirements.

Honeywell, Stereolabs introduce mobile solution for logistics measurement
Nasdaq-listed Honeywell and 3D vision and AI perception firm, Stereolabs, have partnered to develop a new mobile solution that allows logistics operators to measure the size, volume, and weight of boxes and pallets within distribution centres. According to the official press release, the system is designed to assist in planning deliveries and optimising transport efficiency. 'Products stored in a warehouse and transported on a truck contain a wealth of data, from weight and size to the item's name, expiration date and warning label on the box,' said David Barker, President of Honeywell Productivity Solutions and Services. The release added that the solution integrates Stereolabs' stereoscopic cameras, used as a vision-based artificial intelligence perception system to assess product dimensions, with Honeywell's SwiftDecoder software which captures barcode data and other written information. 'Finding a way to capture this data in one place and use it effectively to streamline processes presents a challenge for many operations,' added Barker. Shifting from manual to mobile systems At present, many logistics providers rely on manual processes, such as tape measures and weigh scales, or fixed conveyor-based scan tunnels. In contrast, the new mobile solution enables operators to capture data without being restricted to static systems. The joint product integrates the ZED stereoscopic camera from Stereolabs with Honeywell's barcode decoding software to extract weight and dimension data. This information is uploaded to a central database, allowing companies to plan trailer loading and monitor goods in real time. 'Integrating Honeywell's SwiftDecoder software together with our ZED cameras and advanced perception stack was a smooth and efficient process,' said Olivier Braun, Chief Product Officer at Stereolabs. He added that the company is now able to deliver an all-in-one data capture solution — combining product dimensions, barcode data, optical character recognition information and high-quality imagery — that is ready for integration into any warehouse management system .

Portal closed for business, startup dreams on hold
Ludhiana: Aspiring entrepreneurs of the city have been left stranded as fresh loan applications under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) remain inaccessible largely for the fourth consecutive month of the current financial year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Since April, the online portal for PMEGP — a flagship self-employment scheme — was completely shut for two months and has only recently reopened partially. As of now, only applicants from the scheduled caste (SC) category are allowed to submit applications. General category applicants, who constitute a significant share of aspiring business owners, continue to face an indefinite freeze. "There has never been such a blanket closure since the scheme launched in 2008," said Bhupinder Singh, functional manager at the District Industries Centre (DIC), Ludhiana. "The application process has continued uninterrupted even with changes in govt. This is the first time we've seen a prolonged stoppage." Growing Demand PMEGP is administered by the MSME (micro, small & medium enterprises) ministry and implemented nationally by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). At the state and district levels, it is executed by KVIC directorates, state khadi boards, and district industries centres. The scheme offers financial assistance for setting up new micro-enterprises in both manufacturing and service sectors, based on a credit-linked subsidy model. Under current guidelines, applicants can seek loans of up to ₹50 lakh for manufacturing and ₹20 lakh for service or trading units, with a govt subsidy of 15 to 35%, depending on the category and area. District officials say demand has surged in recent years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Our annual allocation target was ₹3 crore earlier, but last year the demand rose to ₹20 crore," said Bhupinder Singh. No Clarity From Centre Rakesh Kumar Kansal, general manager of the DIC, confirmed that the shutdown was due to technical restrictions from the central govt. "The portal was non-functional for two months after April. It now accepts only SC category applications. We're awaiting further instructions from the Centre on when general category processing will resume," he said. The delay has left many prospective entrepreneurs in a state of confusion and frustration. "We were informed about the scheme in recent seminars, but what's the point if applications haven't been accepted for months?" said Gagandeep Singh, an aspiring applicant. "The govt must act and open the scheme to all categories." Without a clear timeline from the central authorities, the indefinite delay threatens to derail the entrepreneurial ambitions of hundreds across Ludhiana, undermining the very goal of the employment generation programme.
