Shubhanshu Shukla returns to India to a warm welcome
Mr. Shukla's backup astronaut, Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, also returned to the homeland.

Mr. Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and travel to his hometown, Lucknow, shortly. He is also expected to return to the capital to participate in the National Space Day celebrations on August 22–23.

Earlier on Saturday, Mr. Shukla had posted a smiling photograph of himself sitting in an aeroplane on Instagram, saying he was filled with mixed emotions as he left the U.S. and looked forward to returning to India to share his experiences with everyone back home.
"As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family, and everyone in the country for the first time post-mission. I guess this is what life is – everything all at once," Mr. Shukla said in the post.
"Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you. Goodbyes are hard, but we need to keep moving in life. As my commander Peggy Whitson fondly says, 'The only constant in spaceflight is change.' I believe that applies to life as well," he added.
Mr. Shukla also wrote, "I guess at the end of the day – 'Yun hi chala chal rahi – jeevan gaadi hai samay pahiya'," recalling the song from the Bollywood movie Swades, which was on his playlist just before he embarked on the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS on June 25 from the US.
Mr. Shukla and his backup astronaut Prashanth Nair participated in the Independence Day celebrations at the Indian Consulate in Houston on Friday (August 15, 2025).
Addressing the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025) said India was developing its own space station and noted that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla had returned from a space mission.
"Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. In the coming days, he is returning to India," Mr. Modi had said.
Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on 15 July.
Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) — Mr. Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission.

Citizens carrying tricolor, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan, along with others received Shukla at the airport in a bid to celebrate his return after the historic journey from space. Minister Singh taking to social media expressed, " A moment of pride for India! A moment of glory for ISRO! A moment of gratitude to the dispensation that facilitated this under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. At a Punjab varsity, ‘sign lingua franca' for the hearing impaired
Patiala: Researchers at Punjabi University, Patiala, have developed a system that automatically converts spoken Punjabi into Indian Sign Language (ISL) – a technology that can be tweaked to fit any Indian language, giving hope to lakhs of hearing-impaired people. ISL is different from American Sign Language (ASL) and is suited to Indian needs. Funded by the department of science and technology (DST), Govt of India, the technology bridges the communication gap for hearing-impaired individuals, fostering greater inclusion and accessibility. The research project is led by Williamjeet Singh, project supervisor and assistant professor, department of computer science and engineering, with Amandeep Singh as research project assistant. The research has been published in the international journal 'Multimedia tools and applications'. The researchers aim to expand the system to support additional languages, making it accessible to a broader audience. "We are working to launch a mobile application by the end of this year," said Williamjeet. "The system is designed to empower the hearing-impaired community by enabling seamless communication in education, healthcare, and public services," Williamjeet said. "The lack of a universal sign language and limited knowledge of ISL among non-hearing-impaired individuals often create barriers, leading to exclusion and restricted opportunities for the hearing-impaired. It employs the Hamburg Notation System (HamNoSys) to represent sign gestures and Signing Gesture Markup Language (SiGML) to generate animated 3D sign sequences, he explained. The system includes an ISL dictionary that captures both manual (hand gestures) and non-manual (facial expressions and body movements) features, ensuring accurate and natural sign representation. Amandeep Singh said that the system leverages two approaches for sign language representation: synthetic animation and video-based sign presentation. The researchers have put the system through rigorous testing to demonstrate its efficiency, accuracy, and practical usability, said Amandeep. "It supports multilingual speech input, including Punjabi, English and Hindi, and is accessible on both web and mobile platforms. Beyond facilitating daily communication, it serves as an educational tool, enabling users to learn new signs and improve their communication skills," he said. Vice-chancellor Jagdeep Singh congratulated the research team and said, "This innovation promises to transform the lives of millions of hearing-impaired individuals in India and beyond, offering new opportunities for inclusion and interaction. The project's success underscores the transformative potential of technology in tackling societal challenges. By converting spoken words into visual signs, this system brings the world closer to the hearing-impaired, giving voice to their needs and aspirations through the language of signs. "
